Introduction

Great Plains Manufacturing wants you to be satisfied withany new machine delivered by the Great Plains Truckingnetwork. To ease the assembly task and produce a prop-erly working machine, read this entire manual before as-sembling or setting up new equipment.

Description of UnitThe CP1000 is a pull-type seeding implement. The imple-ment consists of a three-point drill mounted on a centre-pivot hitch. The hitch and drill are integrally connected.No-till coulters are mounted on the hitch to zone-till stripsfor seed furrows. Straight-arm openers on the drill prepareseedbeds and place the seed. The pivoting action of thehitch helps drill openers track the coulters. A contract-drive tire on the drill powers seeding off a hitch tire. Thetongue cylinder controls coulter depth and transport cylin-ders raise the drill for turns and transport.

Intended UsageUse this implement for seeding production-agriculturecrops only. Do not modify implement for use with attach-ments other than those specified by Great Plains. Useimplement in no or minimum tillage.

Using This ManualThis manual was written to help you assemble and pre-pare the new machine for the customer. The manual in-cludes instructions for assembly and setup. Read thismanual and follow the recommendations for safe, efficientand proper assembly and setup.

An operator’s manual is also provided with the new ma-chine. Read and understand “Important Safety Informa-tion” and “Operating Instructions” in the operator’smanual before assembling the machine. As a reference, keep the operator’s manual on hand while assembling.

Hitching Tractor to Implement

! DANGER!You may be severely injured or killed by being crushed betweenthe tractor and drill. Do not stand or place any part of yourbody between drill and moving tractor. Stop tractor engine andset park brake before installing pins.

Refer to Figure 11. Place hitch weldment (1) over ball swivel on hitch

tongue (2). Hold hitch weldment in place by insertingspacer tube (3) through hitch clevis and ball swivel.

2. Back tractor up to hitch and bolt hitch weldment totractor drawbar using 1” x 10” bolt (4), large flatwasher (5), lock washer (6) and nut (7).

3. Use 3/4” x 9” bolt (8) to bolt hitch weldment through itsslotted hole and onto secondary hole of tractor draw-bar. Install a 3/4” flat washer (9) next to top slotted holeand fasten with a lock washer (10) and nut (11).Tighten both bolts.

Hydraulic Hook-up

! WARNING!Escaping fluid under pressure can have sufficient force to pene-trate the skin. Check all hydraulic lines and hoses before apply-ing pressure. Fluid escaping from a very small hole can bealmost invisible. Use paper or cardboard, not body parts, tocheck for suspected leaks. If injured, seek medical assistancefrom a doctor that is familiar with this kind of injury. Foreignfluids in the tissue must be surgically removed within a fewhours or gangrene will result.

Refer to Figure 6Great Plains hydraulic hoses are colour coded to help youhook-up hoses to your tractor outlets. Hoses that go to thesame remote valve are marked with the same colour. To

distinguish hoses on the same hydraulic circuit, refer toplastic hose holder. Connect hose under extended cylin-der to outlet you choose for cylinder extension. Connecthose under retracted symbol to outlet for cylinder retrac-tion.

Bleeding Hydraulic SystemsFor safe and smooth operation, the hydraulic systemsmust be free of air. Bled the hydraulic systems during ini-tial implement set-up.

Bleeding Tongue Cylinder1. Check hydraulic fluid in tractor reservoir and fill to

proper level. Add fluid to system as needed. Tonguecylinder capacity is 1.89 litres (one-half gallon).

2. Raise and safely support hitch, transport frame andfront tongue.

3. Unpin rod end of tongue cylinder. Block, wire or other-wise safely support cylinder so when rod end is fullyextended it does not contact anything.

4. Cycle cylinder completely in and out at least threetimes to purge air from cylinder and hoses.

5. Fully extend cylinder and repin rod end.

6. Re-check tractor reservoir and fill to proper level.

Bleeding Transport Lift CylindersThe transport-lift cylinders are rephasing cylinders and re-quire a special procedure for bleeding air from the circuit.Read and follow procedure carefully. Cylinders will notfunction properly with air in the hydraulic circuit.

1. Check hydraulic fluid in tractor reservoir and fill toproper level. Add fluid to system as needed. Trans-port-lift-cylinder capacity is about 7.57 litres (2 gal-lons).

2. Jack up and support hitch frame.

Refer to Figure 73. Remove 1/2” nylock nuts (1) on spring side of cylinder-

support brace. Unpin cylinders. Do not alter position ofjam nuts (2) on centre of support-brace bolts.

4. Turn cylinders to a position where rod ends are higherthan base ends. Support cylinders in a safe location.

5. Start tractor and run engine at idle speed. With rodends higher than base ends, hydraulically extend cyl-inders. After cylinder rods are fully extended, continueto hold control lever for one minute before hydrauli-cally retracting cylinders.

6. Repeat step 5 three times to completely bleed system. If air is still trapped in either cylinder, it will operate injerky, erratic motions. Repeat steps until cylindermovement is smooth and even.

7. Repin cylinders to hitch frame. Reinstall short com-pression springs on cylinder-support-brace bolts andre-tighten 1/2” nylock nuts until springs are com-

8. pressed to 32 mm (1 1/4”). If for any reason the 1/2”jam nuts in centre of support-brace bolts werechanged, refer to Transport Cylinder Support Brace inthe operator’s manual for proper adjustment.

9. Refill tractor hydraulic-fluid reservoir to proper level.

Bleeding Marker Hydraulics

! CAUTION!You may be injured if hit by a folding or unfolding marker.Markers may fall quickly and unexpectedly if the hydraulics fail.Never allow anyone near the drill when folding or unfolding themarkers.

1. Check that tractor hydraulic reservoir is full.

2. With both markers lowered into field position, loosenhydraulic-hose fittings at rod and base ends of markercylinders. Loosen fittings on back side of sequencevalve.

3. With tractor idling, activate tractor hydraulic valve untiloil seeps out around a loosened fitting. Tighten that fit-ting.

4. Reactivate tractor hydraulic valve until oil seeps outaround another loosened fitting. Tighten that fitting.Repeat process until all loosened fittings have beenbled and tightened.

Refer to Figure 35. With center-pivot hitch properly secured to tractor

drawbar, remove transport lock pins located in verticaltubes above tires and place in storage hole next to sta-bilizer cylinder on hitch as shown.

Figure 3Transport Pins in Storage

6. Position the center pivot hitch in front of drill. Use thetransport-lift cylinders to vertically align the mainframe clamp plates with the drill box frame.

Refer to Figure 47. Center the main frame clamp plates with the box

frame. Attach the box frame to the main frame clampplates with two 3/4” x 6” x 5 5/8” U-bolts, 3/4” flat wash-ers, 3/4” lock washers and 3/4” nuts.

Figure 4Attaching Frames

IMPORTANT: Never bleed an O-ring fitting. Instead, bleed a nearby pipe or JIC fitting.

IMPORTANT: JIC fittings do not require high torque.JIC and O-ring fittings do not require sealant. Alwaysuse liquid pipe sealant when adding or replacing pipe-thread fittings. To avoid cracking hydraulic fittings fromover tightening, do not use plastic sealant tape.
