Creativity lies at the heart of

advancements in science, technology,

business, the arts and society.

Many have argued that creativity is

humankind’s ultimate resource.

Any endlessly repetitive task can be

automated by machine or computer.

Organisations employ people for

their unique ability to respond to the

environment in new ways. Dealing

with an unforeseen problem, helping a

customer or employee, or spotting an

opportunity for growth, it is the creation

and implementation of ideas that makes

us different and valuable.

me2 will help you to understand this

important resource and provide a basis

for the development of

your creative capacity

at work, at rest and

at play.

What do we mean by Creativity and Innovation?

Creativity is the capacity within individuals to develop ideas for the purpose of solving problems and exploiting opportunities.

There are many versions of the creative process, but the vast

majority are based upon four stages: preparation, incubation,

illumination and evaluation. This process can take minutes,

days or years for one person or many.

Innovation is the application of creativity to give rise to a new product, service or process delivering something new and better to the world.

your general factor of creativity

me2 provides a score for your General Factor of Creativity. It gives an indication of the

extent to which you consider yourself to be likely to think creatively and approach problems or

opportunities with innovation in mind.

Your score on the General Factor of Creativity

is calculated using a statistical algorithm that

weights each of the different factors of me2

according to how strongly they relate to the

General Factor. It is not created simply by

averaging each of the 12 factors.

Note that the use of an overall score can give a

simplistic interpretation and carefully consider

the details within each of the individual factors.

Leonardo da Vinci is often considered to be one of the most creative people of all time. Far more

than an artist, he was a scientist, musician, engineer, inventor, geologist and architect. Da Vinci

embodies many of the key aspects of the me2

prepared to take on a creative challenge, communicate his ideas with clarity and passion and take

his concepts and implement them into some of the most ground-breaking inventions of all time.

Overall, you see yourself as being considerably more creative than others. This indicates that

the mix of me2 factors and dimensions

that you see yourself possessing is

extremely similar to that often found in

people with highly developed creative

your creative performance but you should be aware that there may be negatives to your current

approach in certain contexts.

You can improve your score on the General Factor of Creativity by working on each of the

12 factors in me2

feedback you receive throughout the rest of your me2 report.

You see yourself as an extremely

many ideas. When presented with a problem or opportunity, you are likely to see many alternative

courses of action. You do not need to

force yourself to produce ideas, it happens

naturally. This is a major strength when

you or your team are trying to solve

problems or exploit opportunities. Not

all the ideas you produce will turn out to

quantity to start with is a good foundation.

Be aware that generating a very large

number of ideas may intimidate others and discourage them from sharing their own, leading to

fewer ideas in total.

You can never have too many ideas. Recognise your skills, value them and take every

opportunity to practise. There are many well established techniques for generating lots of ideas:

Attribute listing, Brainstorming, SCAMMPER,

The Kipling Method and many others. Review

how such techniques can form part of your

development programme.

If you are working as part of a team your skills

will be highly valued. Consider how you can not

only generate many ideas for the team, but also

help others to generate more ideas of their own.

Be aware of the stages of the creative process

and apply your talent when it is most appropriate. A stream of new ideas

when the team is working to evaluate those it already has may be unhelpful.

idea generationincubation

Measuring CreativityThe incubation factor refers to the extent a person will spend time on the non-conscious

processing of ideas. When you allow an idea to be incubated over a period of time, your brain,

even if you are not aware of it, is continuing to solve the problem. Ideas are combined and

recombined until a workable solution is found. This form of problem solving can be far more

powerful than your conscious efforts and can take place while you sleep.

Michelangelo spent 4 months contemplating the piece of marble that became ‘David’ before even

You see yourself as someone who has an extreme preference for spending a long time

incubating a problem rather than coming to a rapid conclusion. This tendency to delay judgement

contributes to idea generation, because

incubating an idea allows more obscure

ideas or alternatives to be considered.

In contrast, someone who comes to a

conclusion quickly will often ignore all

approaches. Your non-conscious thoughts

solutions. You can incubate ideas for a few minutes, weeks, months or even years depending on

the nature of the task. By constantly having a problem to solve or opportunity to address during

your incubation, you will naturally produce many potential solutions. Write them down and keep

them for the evaluation stage.

Do you incubate problems because you want to avoid

the need to make a tough decision. Any decision is usually

better than no decision and meeting deadlines is also an

important part of successful innovation.

idea generationillumination

Measuring CreativityIllumination is the experience of sudden moments of insight. It can occur when you least

expect it and rarely when you are actively thinking about the problem. An important part of the

creative thinking process is the capacity to be open to and to register these sudden breakthrough

insights. All ideas have the potential to lead to innovation and should be captured whenever they

appear. This is not the time for critical evaluation.

Many Nobel Prize winners have had their ideas when they least expected. Our tendency to

experience illuminative moments when falling asleep, lying in the bath or travelling is so marked

studies. The most famous example of illumination is the story of Archimedes, suddenly realising

through the streets of ancient Syracuse.

You see yourself as someone who constantly experiences moments of illumination. You

are much more likely than other people

to have unexpected breakthrough ideas

when you are attempting to solve a

problem. Even though these moments of

insight are a regular occurrence for you, it

is still possible to increase the chance of

them happening.

Illumination can lead to new insights into

familiar problems or issues. Because

the thinking process has been happening outside of your conscious awareness, the ‘rules’ with

diverting your thinking from work that requires concentration.

Recognise these moments of inspiration,

capture them and write them down. Improve your skills

in this area through a combination of wide interests,

active thinking and wondering about your environment.

Consider how you can take steps to be exposed to even

more stimuli from even wider areas.

It takes no time to have an illuminative moment. If

Measuring CreativityThe curiosity factor is concerned with the extent to which you engage with the external world

the greater the raw material you will have to assist your creative output. This is why curiosity is so

important for your creative process.

You have the capacity to generate new ideas;; it is your curiosity that determines what the subject

of those new ideas might be.

You see yourself as someone who is highly curious. You often have an urge to ask the

questions that are the starting point

for curiosity: Who? When? Why? What?

Where?

You have a strong desire to understand

the world around you, regularly pushing

Your high level of curiosity should be recognised and will

be a very positive signal to others. Your desire to explore the

new and the unfamiliar can be vital for the creative process.

You will likely see where opportunities exist to be exploited and

can help other people identify how things can be improved.

Measuring CreativityIntrinsic motivation is your tendency to be motivated by internal stimuli and drives;; to act

due to a sense of joy or challenge that comes from within. It is related to the things that you enjoy

doing. In terms of work, an indicator of an intrinsic motive is when you are happy to do a task

without thought of reward, or when you do not notice how long you have been working on it.

One of the most visible characteristics of people with a high creative output is that they often act

without interest in reward, fame, money or success. Most of the greatest artists lived a basic

lifestyle without any trappings of success. Van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime and

that was to his brother. Inventors toil for long, lonely hours with endless prototypes. The drive for

them to rise early and work late is usually their inner reserves of intrinsic motivation and not the

You see yourself to be frequently motivated by the joy or challenge inherent in the tasks

you engage in. The underlying drive for

some of the work that you do is that it

motives, like meeting the expectations of

There are advantages for creativity in your

Consider whether you sometimes get particularly preoccupied with ideas or types of

what you enjoy, rather than what needs to be done? Effective

may result in working only until you have found a satisfactory

motivationcompetitive

Measuring CreativityCompetitive motivation describes the extent to which you compare your performance and

win at all cost. Sometimes, the less time you have, the harder you think, the more you focus and

the better your creative output.

You see yourself as having a balance. On one side there will be times when you want to

be competitive and to have your successes recognised, on the other, there will be times when

these issues are not so important to you.

You enjoy work that is both fast-paced,

dynamic and which pressures you to

out-perform others, but you enjoy less

pressured or competitive work too.

Competitive motivators are powerful

shapers of the creative process. It can

be that people are pushed to the highest levels of creativity because they seek to do better than

help people to be creative when presented with challenges.

Your balanced approach to competitive motivation is a real asset to aid your creative

output. Be selective over what projects you put extra effort into and decide where your time would

be best spent in order to have the greatest impact. Consider where your extra effort will deliver

greater returns, make time and put in the effort to win. When there is little to be gained, be

rate of failure. This disappointment will help you achieve

motivationachievement

Measuring CreativityThe achievement factor is concerned with the extent to which you perceive yourself to be

hard-working and determined, with a desire to strive for excellence. If intrinsic and competitive

describe the nature of your motivation, achievement describes its force.

Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, used to apply for a new patent every two weeks and he

their lifetimes compared to similar groups of internationally acclaimed scientists.

You see yourself as exceptionally achievement oriented. You place a very strong emphasis

on hard work, continuous personal

improvement and attaining excellence in

how you approach work. You will prefer a

role in which you can chart your progress

and feel that you are becoming excellent

Possessing a very strong desire to excel

can help you to overcome obstacles to seeing your creative ideas become a reality. Your focus on

achievement can help when your creative ideas are criticised or challenged by others. Be aware,

people who are extremely achievement oriented can be obsessive or place more emphasis on

achieving than building and maintaining personal relationships.

Innovation is never easy;; you face challenges and obstacles at every stage. Your exceptional

drive to achieve is a major contributor to innovation. You can take a problem or opportunity and

see it all the way through to a successful result.

If you focus exclusively on continuous progress, without leaving time to explore ideas, you may

strive for excellence may result in a lack of sensitivity to the

This can reduce the overall creative output of the team.

initial ideas. Creative output is increased dramatically when people are open and prepared to

share ideas. The collective life experience of a group is many times more than that of any one

individual, dramatically enhancing the stimuli for ideas. Every idea shared is a potential catalyst

for another suggestion as connections are made. This process is known as the Creative Multiplier.

The nature of the creative process often means that people can be reluctant to share early ideas

to avoid looking foolish. The idea may destroy a belief, approach or process that someone else

strongly supports. Early ideas often do not make sense but creativity depends on people being

open and prepared to share their ideas.

You see yourself as someone who is extremely open to sharing ideas. This can be very

important to stimulate further ideas in other people, which often lead to new levels of originality

in seeking solutions. When solving

problems and generating ideas in a group

setting, it is rarely about being the person

who comes up with the idea. Instead,

each individual idea is a contribution to

a collective effort to solve a problem or

exploit an opportunity. Your willingness to

share your ideas can give people who are

for creativity. Yet, there can be disadvantages to a very strong willingness to share ideas, as it can

intimidate others or lead to you dominating team meetings.

70 per cent of communication is non-verbal. Share ideas face-to-face;; few activities can

destroy a creative idea more effectively than a chain of e-mails. Your willingness to share ideas

Innovation The capability to generate new ideas and approach

opportunities creatively is the focus of me2. The skills required for

putting creativity into practice are different and require separate
