Teaching at TBCTBC Mission Statement Provide a highly energetic, God-honoring atmosphere where the individual can come to know Jesus as their personal Savior. From this experience develop a growing, loving, faithful relationship with Him. Our church will foster spiritual development through exciting worship, practical fellowship, relevant discipleship and personal growth opportunities (exercising our God-given gifts), using biblical, ethical, practical and relevant methods. Matt 28:19-20

Translating Mission into Philosophy Provide an environment that fosters exciting worship, relevant lessons, and inclusive activities and events that will encourage a closer relationship with Jesus and others. Partner with the family to assist in the spiritual growth of their child. Provide a safe, secure learning environment for the students. Provide students the opportunity to participate in ministry. Enlist and train Godly men and women to serve God through serving

children. We WILL mess up as we try new things to excite the students into action for Christ. Messing up means we’re doing something! We won’t overreact to failures, but we’ll learn from our mistakes, make corrections and move forward.Moral excellence is not seeing what we can get by with but setting the highest bar of Christian conduct for ourselves. If you desire a closer walk with Christ and are striving for moral excellence, you will far exceed the guidelines outlined here. Our conduct outside the church needs to demonstrate the same character seen inside the church.

Guard your testimony!

Leaders need to refrain from the consumption of alcohol or non-prescribed drugs (excluding OTC). Trips to establishments that bring your testimony into question should not be acceptable.Today, internet interactions are monitored and critiqued by everyone. Misconduct on the internet travels at the speed of light! Keep your Facebook, Twitter and other social websites above reproach.

C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y G U I D E L I N E S

Active member of TBC (Teacher >12 months; Assistant >6 months)

Born Again and baptized. Agree to the TBC Articles of Faith.

Know how to win the lost to Christ.Maintain a regular prayer time.

Pray for the students you teach.

Student of the Word of God.

Dedicate time in preparation for study.

Regular church attendance (>75%) in the four main services per week. When not teaching, be physically, mentally and spiritually in the services. Teachers and leaders need to be spiritually fed also.

Contact the pastoral staff when you know that you won’t be able to attend.

Sometimes work schedules do not permit regular attendance. Exceptions will be worked between the pastoral staff and the individual.

Be honest; if your job or other activities will prevent you from faithfully attending, let the pastoral staff know you are unable to continue teaching.

Teachers need to be ready for class by <30 minutes beforehand.Be on time and prepared.

Ensure all equipment is working 30 minutes before class start times and that all class material is in the classrooms.

Keep student records up to date.

Follow up with missing students, at least monthly.

The teacher is responsible to contact new prospects.

Tithe. If you don’t tithe, please let the pastoral staff know you are unable to continue teaching.

Only use the teaching material provided or approved by the pastoral staff.

Ad-hoc lessons discourages inclusion of assistants, as they cannot plan or study to support the lessons.

Biblical references in most teaching material does NOT use the KJV. Teachers need to convert handout material to KJV when necessary.

Memory verse work must be in KJV, no exceptions!

Engage!! Fellowship with other members and engage with the parents. Fellowship is not “work” or a distraction, it is essential to spiritual growth. Don’t become an isolationist!

Attend scheduled training classes and conferences.

See ‘Training’ for additional details.

Remain current on and agree to the Teacher’s Guidelines.Favorable background checks.

See ‘Reference/Background Checks' for details.

Reference/Background Checks All teachers/workers must undergo regularly scheduled background checks, including: Criminal background checks – state and national Sex offender investigation – state and national Vehicle investigation – state, needed if the applicant will be driving a

church vehicle Other TBC ministries may require additional background checks (i.e.,

credit reports, etc.)

Training Training is meant to improve skills, challenge our potential and understand standards. We do not train only to go back to “business as usual” but want the new skills to become part of the teacher’s/leader’s “tool-box”. Biblical Training: The material we provide is designed to accommodate the beginning teacher, as well as, those with experience. We have a library with reference material available for use. Remember, this is for your spiritual growth, as well as, the students.Leadership Training: Christians are leaders! We provide leadership training throughout the year. These conferences are designed to develop leaders in their Servant Leader roles, at home, and even in the corporate environment.Policies and Guidelines: Student/teacher conduct, insurance policy stipulations, security, child check-in, travel and other topics are covered in these sessions.Participation in the policy and guideline discussions are required. TBC must provide documented proof that the material was presented, and that the teacher/leader attended.

Emergency ProceduresPlease remain calm in all emergency situations. Your reaction to the situation will determine the reaction of the children. In the case of an evacuation, look to the designated staff member for instruction.Bring your check-out notebook. The TBC team leaders will oversee the evacuation in their area.

Life Threatening Situations Accidents/incidents that have resulted in loss of consciousness, significant blood loss, difficulty breathing, etc. Immediately call 911 and give the following information:

o Type of injury or health conditiono Information about the injured child: age, gender, etc. (Reference

MT)o Address: 12440 Rendon Road, Burleson, Tx 76028

Contact the ERT and pastoral staff; notify them that 911 has been called. ERT, Hospitality or the pastoral staff will then locate the parents and the emergency medical plan will be followed.

Non-Life-Threatening Situations Minor accidents resulting in a bump, bite, bruise or scrape can be handled in the classroom. Contact the pastoral staff to get a medical kit to the classroom. Report the injury to the pastoral staff, Hospitality or ERT. The team member that witnessed the incident must fill out an Incident

Report. These are in the teacher’s binders or at the Check-In station. Provide incident report to the pastoral staff for review. The pastoral

staff will be responsible to provide copies to the parent/guardian. A signed copy will be placed on file.

Be honest with the parents about the situation that occurred. Do not offer medical advice to parents.

Adult/Child SafetyTBC maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding child abuse and neglect. Child abuse and neglect includes, but not limited to, physical or mental injury, sexual abuse, negligent treatment or maltreatment. Sexual abuse is defined as the use, persuasion, or coercion of any child

to engage in any sexually explicit conduct (or any simulation of such conduct) for the purpose of producing any visual depiction of such conduct or rape, molestation, prostitution or incest with children.

If your child tells us that they have been abused, we will (must) report it!

NOTE: We will not hesitate to report any signs of child abuse!

Student and Teacher Protection For the protection of the children and TBC team, there must always be two adults present in a classroom. If a class has only one teacher, and another assistant cannot be found, that class will be merged with another class to insure two adults are in the room. Merge the classrooms as follows:

Little Learners Nursery Primary Intermediate

Intermediate Jr High

Jr High High School or Intermediate

If something is needed after children have arrived, get assistance to either cover the classroom or get the items for you. (Use radios if necessary.)Be discerning; guard against any behavior or practices that may put yourself or team members at risk.Counselling StudentsTeachers/assistants do NOT counsel. We will listen to the kids, and use scripture references to help them, but we do not counsel! Never agree to keep conversations confidential. Workers are responsible to report any abuse children may report. There is a “should have known” legal aspect from our leadership. The

pastor is expected to know about issues that could have legal ramifications.

Restroom Policy Adult male or female team members can assist children to and from the

restroom and may need to assist a child using the restroom (upon their request!).

Physical ContactPhysical conduct in any form should be above reproach, our behavior should foster trust. The following are appropriate ways to touch children:

An arm around the shoulder Hand holding (i.e. During prayer) Pat on the back or shoulder Handshakes, high-fives and knuckles

Conversely, a team member should NEVER:

Touch in any manner that can be construed as sexually suggestive

Touch a child between the navel and the knee Touch a child’s private parts (exception:

diaper/bathroom procedures)

document.docx 7

C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y G U I D E L I N E S

Do not insist on physical contact, touch, or affection with a reluctant child. Respect a child’s

preference not to be touched!

Verbal InteractionsVerbal interactions should be encouraging, constructive, and mindful of the mission to assist parents in the spiritual growth and development of their children.Never speak to a child in a way that could be construed by any reasonable observer as harsh, threatening, intimidating, shaming, derogatory, demeaning, or humiliating.

Discipline that Disciples TBC endeavors to provide a learning environment free from distraction. Some behavioral problems can be avoided by removing/limiting distractions. Problems provide learning opportunities that can help a child understand how God’s Word can make a difference in difficult situations.Dealing with Problem Behavior Set boundaries and stick to them!

o Act when the boundaries are violated, not when you get frustrated or angry!

o Use the radio to request assistance from the pastoral staff, Check-in staff or Hospitality team.

Do not hesitate to remove the child from the activity/environmento Contact the parent to help remove and correct the studento Use the radio to request assistance in contacting the parent; the

pastoral staff, Check-in staff or Hospitality team will assist. Use a firm but gentle voice to address the behavior. Focus remarks on the behavior that you want to see. Never make remarks that put down the individual or make negative

references about appearance, race or gender.

If children cannot be checked-in, they will need to remain with their parents. Bus kids will sit with their respective drivers or TBC team designee.

Children will not be allowed beyond the gate without a badge.

All buildings will be locked 10-15 minutes after services commence. Between services, the doors will be unlocked until 10-15 minutes after the next service commences.

Health Concerns For the safety of the other students and workers, TBC cannot take a student that is sick and/or contagious. If a child comes in sick: The child needs to be symptom free for >24 hours, before being

allowed back into the nursery, classrooms or sanctuary. The parent will need to keep the sick child. They should not be allowed

access to infect other children, or church members.

No medication of any kind will be administered by any TBC team members.

General Check-In Guidelines Child check-in includes children from nursery age to intermediate.

o Communicate the dismissal procedures to First Time Guests at check-in!

No one is allowed beyond the gate into the classrooms without a badge. NO EXCEPTIONS!

o Gate is to remain locked.o Gate is accessible via the security badge.

Once check-in begins, the classrooms are open and must be attended by two adults.

o At check-in, TBC is responsible for the child.o At bus pick up, TBC is responsible for the child.

The nursery has pagers for parents with nursery age children, BUT, pagers can be issues for older age groups that have medical/behavioral issues, or if there are domestic issues that the parent wants to guard against.

Make sure the parents know:o They need to return to the check-in station to get their kids.o They will need their badges to check their kids out.

Kids that are dropped off will be considered “Guest Of”, and assigned to a teacher, a member of the pastoral staff, or a “Guest Of” who is familiar with the child.

At check-out, teachers will call via radio to release kids to go up to the check in station.

o TBC Lighthouse Kids teachers can be released to help with child check-out.

Check-in team will secure the badges of the child and parent into the check-out binder.

Check out the child through Ministry Tracker logging the primary adult that checked out the child.Auto-Release ProvisionParents that have students in the intermediate and Jr High classes can designate their students to be allowed to be released without the parent formally checking out the student, with the following stipulations: Parents must sign a release form before the student can be auto-

released. This needs to be done apart from the normal check-in to reduce congestion during check-in periods.

document.docx 12

C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y G U I D E L I N E S

Auto-released students will be dismissed through the back door allowing them access to the ball court. This will cut down on the congestion at the front door.

o Once the TBC team member releases the student, the parent assumes full responsibility.

The release form applies only to church services; it does not apply to Special Events. Separate forms will be provided for parental/guardian consent.

If the parent wants to remove the student from auto-release, they must fill out removal form. This will negate the auto-release form.

Verbal requests to add or remove a student is not valid.

Collecting Child InformationSome bus kids, “Guest Of” kids, and even member kids do not know their address or contact information. When the child cannot provide their address information, please follow these steps: Ask the bus driver or “Guest Of” hosts to get as much address

information as possible. o For member kids, please get with the parents to have the

information updated! The bus driver will turn this information in to the check-in station. The TBC teachers, check-in team and pastoral staff need to take joint responsibility to ensure that a visitor packet is sent home with the child, requesting contact information. If the child visits again without the Visitor Information card, the pastoral staff and teachers will be jointly responsible for conducting a site visit to get the pertinent contact information from the parent/guardian.The check-in team or the pastoral staff will enter the information into Ministry Tracker.

Check-In/Out Binder Upon child’s arrival write any parent notes; allergies, bathroom routine,

etc., in the binder. Make sure medical information is written on the 3rd Check-in badge and entered into Ministry Tracker.

o For Nursery children, the check-in station will collect this information in the check-in binder, before taking the baby to the nursery. This will help make the transition for the babies, quick!

At dismissal, remove the child’s name tag and take the parent badge. Use Ministry Tracker to log the check-out, entering in the primary adult that checked out the child..

Make SURE card information is brought back to the pastoral staff. This information will be entered into Ministry Tracker before the next weeks scheduled services. This information is needed to: Record student attendance through Ministry Tracker Notify students of ongoing events at the church, and, Have the students listed on the backup hardcopy attendance sheets,

and, Have in the event of a disaster or Active Shooter. The recovery teams

will use the information entered in Ministry Tracker to locate students and notify parents.

Lost BadgesFor the safety of all the children, we do not want to make any exceptions to the check-out process. If a parent/guardian badge is lost, a pastoral staff member, or other designee, will have to verify that the parent is authorized to pick up the child. Parents will be asked to provide a photo-id to get their child. If a child loses their badge, escort them back to the check-in station to

get a new badge. o If the information is on the 3rd Badge at the check-in station, two

team members MUST verify the information has been transferred accurately.

TBC ActivitiesYouth activities are a high energy and highly volatile part of ministry. The primary objectives for all activities are to develop stronger bonds with the young people and to establish and strengthen their relationship with Jesus.Be aware! Some people come to church regardless of the events; others will only come because there ARE events. We don’t care WHY they come, as long as, they come. We are 100% ineffective at ministering to kids that don’t show up.The youth ministry is extremely volatile. One unpleasant experience will affect participation in future events and more importantly, attendance in regular church services

Event/Project Teams Events must be coordinated with other project teams to insure seamless transitions and/or coexistence. Larger projects will necessitate a project manager to execute a successful event. Project team members are expected to: Attend planning meetings; Engage in the planning and report on the

status of assigned tasks.o Be flexible; the objective is to achieve the exceptional results, not

debate the methodso Be open and expect change. Any project can and should be

improved on! That’s the way we’ve always done it, is an indicator that we’ve stopped trying to improve!

TBC has preformatted project documents to plan events. As we can capture action items we can streamline the events in the future.

Ask for help – inclusion is a good thing! Regardless of age, people need multiple reminders of events. Call, send

notes, have the event placed in the bulletins, or provide the pastoral staff with a note to announce it during worship; anything to remind people of the events.

o Events should take advantage of any “early bird” rates for events.o Allow plenty of time to get the events on calendar or the bulletino When building flyers, posters, etc., please use Microsoft Office

Word, PowerPoint or Publisher.o Outgoing flyers, posters, etc., need to be approved by the pastoral

staff.

Onsite Activities

document.docx 19

C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y G U I D E L I N E S

Permission slips may be required ; make sure the participants have ample time to get the authorization to do the activity. If a permission slip is needed, do not allow a young person to go without one: no exceptions!

If a budget is needed, make sure it is cleared with the pastoral staff. If necessary, budget requests will be presented at the business meeting.

Make sure everything is tested and ready to go before the event. Don’t make participants wait for the activity to start due to unpreparedness.

Clean up thoroughly when done!o Throw all trash into the large blue container (the dogs are

merciless!)o Reconfigure the rooms back for their next use.o Make sure everything is put back where it goes!

Report anything that may get broke to the project manager: accidents happen, we just need to have it fixed before the next event.

Turn off all the lights (except where noted) Make sure the building is secured before leaving

o Leave the outside porch light and entry-way light ono Double check the doors to insure they are locked. If they don’t

lock, don’t leave!o Set the alarms

Offsite Activities The youth ministry is extremely volatile. One unpleasant experience will affect participation in future events and most importantly, involvement in regular church services Permission slips ARE REQUIRED. Make sure the participants have

ample time to get the authorization to do the activity. The student cannot go unless a valid permission slip is provided: no exceptions!

If a budget is needed, make sure it is cleared with the pastoral staff. If necessary, budget requests will be presented at the business meeting.

Document who comes and conduct a headcount check at every stop. Big rule to remember: if the young person goes with us, they MUST

come back with us. We are responsible for returning them to the spot where we picked them up. The only exception is if a parent is picking them up.

o In the case of separated/divorced parents, the parent with custody must okay release to the other parent.

Report anything that may get broke to the project manager: accidents happen, we just need to have it fixed before the next event/activity

Make sure the building is secured before leavingo Leave the outside porch light and entry-way light ono Double check the doors to insure they are locked. If they don’t

lock, don’t leave!

o Set alarmsTeam leader! When attending events, conduct a cursory security review with the participants before the event. Discuss evacuation plans, and designate a “regrouping” location, in the event of disaster. In no way should these plans circumvent the security plans of the facility.

TBC ResourcesTBC has a lot of exciting ministries going on all the time at the church. Inevitably, these events overlap and frequently the same people will be involved in multiple activities.

Facilities Our facilities are multipurpose. General rules of thumb: Assume the facility will be needed immediately after your event! Always leave the facilities better and cleaner than you found them! Put resources back where they go. Don’t leave items out. Dispose of

non-reusable items. o Hundreds of dollars are wasted each year because items were not

put back in their proper location! Stage equipment is not to be touched; most of this equipment is owned

by individuals. Contact A/V team or owner(s) to use or move A/V equipment.

Main BuildingSanctuary: the primary function is for worship services. The sanctuary needs to be ready for worship services. This includes realignment of chairs and stage readiness.

Servant LeadershipBefore any other skill or talent, we bring our

integrity to the table. Without integrity, skill and talent is useless.

When many people think about leadership, they think of the great benefits, status, power or exclusion from certain levels of accountability. Christian leadership is the antithesis of these ideas. There are great benefits in serving the Lord that one can only know by active, committed, participation. We trade power for influence, status for servant-hood and establish new levels of personal accountability that sets us apart.

Here are some leadership truths to think about:

document.docx 24

C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y G U I D E L I N E S

Everything I do counts Someone is always

watching me Loyalty to other leaders

and workers Mutual respect A servant’s heart Personal accountability

More is expected of the Leaders Leaders don’t get to have a bad day! Equal expression of love to others (no

favorites) Leaders build up, never tear anyone

down Self-esteem is extremely volatile: I

must preserve the person’s dignity always

document.docx 25

C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y G U I D E L I N E S

Integrity – “My Testimony” The most important characteristic for any leader is spiritual integrity. Before the lesson is taught, or the music is sung integrity is being evaluated. If students do not trust our sincere, faithful devotion to Jesus, the integrity of our leadership will also be in question.Integrity reflects on the worker, our leadership and the church. Therefore, workers need to be able to answer these statements in the affirmative: I will not engage in activities that will bring my integrity into question

(abstain from all appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22) I will preserve my fellow leader’s integrity.

o Disagreements are opportunities to show the youth how to deal effectively with conflict. If we can’t successfully resolve conflicts, how can we teach our youth to resolve conflict?

o We must protect the integrity and dignity of each other. NEVER talk about how another leader is conducting their work. Work issues out privately or seek assistance from the pastoral staff.

Values All leaders come under the spotlight; the youth, parents and the church take inventory of our behavior. Our values determine how we choose to be held accountable. We assume that a Reasonable Servant will demonstrate: The courage to accept responsibility:

Conflict ResolutionRomans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in

you, live peaceably with all men.

It would be naïve to assume that any organization, or church, could operate without some level of conflict. Conflict results from: differing opinions of operation/execution, creative differences, the feeling that personal rights have been violated, hurts feelings, and the list could go on. Since it’s not a matter of IF, the real question becomes HOW. Just how will we choose to handle conflict? It is expected of leaders to follow these principles of conflict resolution. Keep a couple things in mind:1) You may have a conflict with someone and they don’t know there’s a

problem!2) Be approachable; some conflicts are not resolved because the other

party is intimidated.3) Seek to understand before being understood (7 Habits principle).4) Be clear; if the explanation is unclear, the solution will probably be

unclear. When resolving situations, keep these guidelines in mind: Talk the problem out and seek a solution with only the necessary

parties. o If a REAL resolution cannot be found, seek assistance from the

pastor.o At no time should those “outside the issue” become involved.o Do not say or imply anything (including rolling eyes!), that would

change the way other people perceive the other person.o Building a coalition through gossip and hearsay is wrong.

Coalitions do not help solve problems, they only serve to expand collateral damage.

Express feelings honestly, yet with love. Use consistent Biblical principles. Don’t prolong the situation. Be ready to apologize and do so with honesty. Have a forgiving spirit. When the situation has been resolved let it go. Be open to constructive criticism (it can sometimes hurt). Handling the

situation poorly is just as bad as the wrong itself. Keep the big picture in mind; if you can’t resolve a squabble, how can

you teach others how to resolve their conflicts. Be determined to fix the problem and don’t quit.

Find the good in all situations; God reveals himself through circumstances.

Do not get involved when you’re not directly involved. Refuse to hear, what you don’t need to hear. Point the parties to the appropriate mediator for resolution.

Anything can be resolved if both parties want to; there is always a solution!
