This document will take you through step-by-step on how to successfully set up the

digital camera, data logger and upload mission photos to the Automated Recon

Geotagging-image Upload System (ARGUS).

ARGUS is a web based system for processing both air and ground Civil Air Patrol

mission. This system is currently testing in a limited number of Wings. It is currently

only available on a limited basis. You can register for an account by going to the ARGUS

system login at ARGUS Login (http://www.ncr.cap.gov/mssn_galry/sp/login.pl).

Pre-departure Check List of Camera and Data Logger

Step # 1

Prior to starting the photo mission, make sure that the camera is set to UTC time. Go to

the USNO Master Clock website and set your camera time exactly to the UTC time as

noted on the master clock. This needs to be done as close to the second as possible. This

is done so that during processing of the photos the data logger file and the camera file are

able to match up.

Step # 2

Have your crewmembers recheck the camera for the correct time once again. If the time

is not correct, you will have a lot of work to do while uploading photos into ARGUS!

Step # 3

Install a “clean” formatted memory card in your camera that has no photos or other data

on it. Set up D200 Camera.

Step # 4

Make sure you have good batteries in your RoyalTek data logger. If you are unsure,

install new batteries (2 AAA required) and take extra batteries with you in the aircraft.

Step # 5

Turn ON the Datalogger. Note the LED indicator conditions; if the LED is amber, the

memory is full, if steady green, position is fixed and unit is working. If blinking green

the unit is acquiring satellites. If the battery is low the red LED will blink and the green

LED will be dim.

When the battery power is down to 10% the red LED flashes. REPLACE BATTERIES

OR UNIT WILL SOON QUIT RECORDING YOUR LOCATION!!!

Step # 6

Reset the Datalogger to clear out any old tracks by depressing the button on the end of

the unit with a pen or other pointed object for 3 seconds.

Step # 7

Make sure the Datalogger light is solid green. If not, it is not receiving a signal from the

satellites.

Step # 8

Take an establishing shot of your location before taking off or leaving. This is so we

have at least one known frame of reference if the technology fails. If returning to the

same place you left from your last photo should be of the same object as your first photo

for reference purposes. Turn off the data logger immediately after the last reference

photo to avoid unnecessary track logs.

Step # 9

The CAPF 104b shall be used to log all photos as they are being taken. If time and safety

permits, have the Mission Observer (right front crewmember) write down the photo

information as given by the Mission Scanner or Aerial Photographer. Be sure to note

camera direction.

Post Mission Processing Steps to Upload Images and Data Logger Files

Step # 1

Upon returning to mission base find any available computer and locate on the desktop the

folder named ARGUS.

Step # 2

Create a new folder in the ARGUS folder and rename it your MISSION NUMBER.

Step # 3

Connect the USB cord to data logger and plug into the computer and turn it ON.

Step # 4

In the ARGUS folder double click on the icon ‘Troy’s Updated Data Downloader’.

Click on the icon displayed below and navigate to the MISSION folder you created in the

ARGUS folder on the desktop.

Click on the Connection tab and select from the Logger Select menu RGM-3800(USB).

Then click on connect. The track log from the data logger will now be extracted and

saved into the mission folder you created earlier.

Click on the Data Download tab and select the log file(s) from your assigned mission/

sortie. If more than one track log is in the left column select them all (hold shift down and

click on each log file) to .

Step # 10

Click on the arrow in-between the two columns. This will start the transfer of the log

file(s) from the column on the left into the column on the right. The log file(s) will also

be saved into the mission folder you created. The green progress bar along the bottom of

the window will illustrate when the progress is 100% complete. This will take only a few

minutes.

Step # 11

Navigate to the mission folder and check to make sure the track log file has been saved

into this location. If not go back to the RoyalTek Data Logger Data Downloader window

and make sure the path in the device config tab is to the mission folder you created and

repeat steps 7 to 10.

Once you have checked the data log files are in the mission folder you may close the

RoyalTek Data Logger Data Downloader window.

Step # 12

Turn off and disconnect the data logger from the computer. Connect the camera to the

computer and transfer the images you took from the mission and place into the mission

folder you created. Transfer to the mission folder ONLY images that pertain to the

objective of the mission.

Step # 13

Disconnect the camera from the computer and turn off.

Click on ‘Mission, Sortie, Image Upload Manager’. The screen will not appear to

change, but Mission, Sortie, Image Upload Manager will now be the title on the left side

of the screen (make sure you verify this).

Then click on South Dakota State (or your applicable state)

Create a mission folder by entering the mission number and then click Submit

Open the mission folder and enter a brief mission description i.e., mission objective.

Click Save Changes

Step # 20

Enter the sortie number (numbers only) and select if it was an air or ground sortie.

Then click submit.

Click on the sortie folder you created

Write a brief sortie description i.e., a brief description of the route you took.

Click on ‘Upload Pictures and GPS Log Files’

Click on ‘Browse’ and navigate to the mission folder you created in the ARGUS folder

on the desktop and upload all mission relevant IMAGES one by one, including the

appropriate TRACK LOG file.

Once all applicable photos and track log have been entered, click on „Upload Files‟. This

may take several minutes depending on how many images you are uploading.

Once all files have been successfully uploaded you will be returned to the following

screen.

Enter the latitude, longitude, location, object and the camera location for each image.

Step # 40

Once you are satisfied with all images click LOG OUT

Reset the data logger to clear all track logs and also format the camera memory card so

that all images are deleted.

Do not delete the track log and images from the mission folder you created in the

computer.
