Depth of f ie ld is the range between the nearest and far thestdistances which are in focus at a g iven lens aperture.l f you want to know howgreat the depth of f ie ld is at a certa inaperture, focus on the subject and look at the depth-of- f ie ld scaleon the lens. In the photograph below the distance scale is set at5 meters; that is , the lens is focused on a subject 5 meters away. The cal ibrat ions on each s ide of the distance index correspond tothe diaphragm set t ing and indicate the range of in- focus distancefor d i f ferent lens aperture. For example, i f a lens opening of f l4 is to be used, the range on thedistance scale r ing covered wi th in the f igure 4 on the depth-of- f ie ldscale indicates the area in focus at that lens opening. You wi l l notefrom the depth-of- f ie ld scale in the photograph that the range f romapproximately 4 to 7m is in focus. Note that as the lens apertureschange, the ef fect ive depth of f ie ld a lso changes. For the depth off ie ld at d i f ferent apertures and distances, refer to the next page.

  • RESISTANCE TO TEMPERATURE EXTREMES AND CHANGES

The temperature range at which your camerawi l l cont inue to funct ion proper ly st retchesfrom 50" C to -20'C. However, resistance tocold could be hampered by oi l which hasbecome dir ty . Therefore, i f the camera is tooperate at fu l l ef f ic iency in very cold condi t ions,i t mus t be ove rhau led and a l l o i l mus t be rep laced .Sudden changes in temperature wi l l of ten causemo is tu re to condense ins ide o r ou ts ide yourcamera. This is a possib le source of rust , whichmay be extremely damaging to the mechanism.Furthermore, i f the camera goes f rom a warmtemperature to a sub-freezing one, and i f t inydrops of moisture f reeze, fur ther damage maybe done by the i r expans ion .

Thus, sudden temperature changes should beavoided as much as possib le. As a guide,a temperature change of 10" C should be al lowedto take place gradual ly over a per iod of at least30 m inu tes . l f t h i s i s no t poss ib le , keep ing thecamera in i ts case or bag wi l l help somewhat inminimiz ing the ef fects of a rapid temperaturechange.Extremely low temperature reduces the ef f ic iencyof the bat tery. Therefore, the camera should beprotected against low temperature. Put thebatter ies into the camera r ight before shoot ing.For extremely low temperature, use new bat ter ies.
