Manual Motor StartersGeneral information

Selecting the appropriate modelThe procedure for selecting the appropriate model is given below.

Typical problem in the conventional system Solution by using MMS system

Short-circuit breaking protectionWhen numerous small and medium motor loads exist in a circuitrequiring high breaking capacity, there is no high-breaking capacitycircuit breaker with a small rated current for short-circuit protection.

Back-up breaking systemWhen a back-up MCCB is installed upstream to slove the probremdescribed in "short-circuit breaking protection" above, a short in oneof the load circuits also trips the upstream breaker and stops theother operating load circuits.

Overload protectionMotor protection breakers cannot be adjusted to match the ratedcurrent of the motor being protected.

Control panel sizeConsiderable space is required to install a back-up circuit breaker ora combination starter consisting of a circuit breaker and a thermaloverload relay. As a result, the panel size has to be increased.

The MMS can be used in 100kA short-circuit current circuitsfor three-phase, 240V motors with rated capacity up to 15kW,and in 50kA short-circuit current circuits for three-phase,415V motors with rated capacity up to 30kW.

Despite their compact size, the 32AF and 63AF MMS providehigh-performance short-circuit current breaking. Theyeliminate the need for an upstream circuit breaker for back-upuse.

Equipped with a wide-range current adjustment dial (withmaximum/minimum ratio of 1.4 to 1.6), the MMS easily adjuststo match the rated current of the motor, for optimumprotection.

The compact size of the MMS, including thermal overloadrelay functions, enables a smaller installation area with lesswiring space, for a reduction in panel size.

1 Confirm the motor's full load current.

3 Select the rated current for the MMS.

5 Confirm the short-circuit current of the circuit.

4 Select the branch circuit cable. Confirm the control panel specifications.

2 Three-phase load 2 Single-phase load

6 Select the operating characteristics.

For application to a single-phase circuit, connect the 3-pole in series.

TK-M series with phase-loss protective device Features

• This relay protects motor windings from burning due tooverloads, locked rotor currents, or phase-loss.

• A finely divided scale for the current adjustment dial enableseasy and exact current settings.

• Operating status can be visually checked with ease.• The reset method after tripping can be set either manually

or automatically.• By mounting an auxiliary contact block, 1NO+1NC auxiliary

contact arrangement is possible. In this case, thermaloverload relay cannot be used with automatic reset.

• Test buttons can be pressed or released to turn the NCcontact (terminal No. 95 and 96) OFF and ON.

• Adding the optional accessories (the base unit and inputterminal) enables separate-mounting types of the thermaloverload relays.

Standard operating conditionsThe magnetic contactors are manufactured for use in thestandard operating conditions given in the table at the right.Consult FUJI before using the magnetic contactors in differentconditions.

Wirings• Connection wires and terminal processingBe sure to perform wiring correctly with reference to theconnections diagram. Main terminals for models SC-E02 toSC-E7 are wired using solid wires or stranded wires.Stranded wires or flexible stranded wires can be connectedby twisting them together, crimping a sleeve (ferrule) ontothem before connecting.

• Tightening torqueIf wires are not tightened sufficiently, they may become hot orcome loose and result in a fire, short-circuit, electric shock, orsome other potentially dangerous situation. Be sure to tightenthe wires to the torques specified in the tables below.

Thermal overload relays

Standard operating conditionsThe thermal overload relays are manufactured for use in thestandard operating conditions given in the table at the right.Consult FUJI before using the thermal overload relays indifferent conditions.

Wirings• Connection-wires and terminal processingBe sure to perform wiring correctly with reference to theconnections diagram. Main terminals for models TK-E02 toTK-E6 are wired using solid wires or stranded wires.Stranded wires or flexible stranded wires can be connectedby twisting them together, crimping a sleeve (ferrule) ontothem before connecting.

• Tightening torqueIf wires are not tightened sufficiently, they may become hot orcome loose and result in a fire, short-circuit, electric shock, orsome other potentially dangerous situation. Be sure to tightenthe wires to the torques specified in the tables below.

Combination Starters

KK02-162 KK02-152

Description• The user can assemble a combination starter by combining a

BM3 series manual motor starter and an SC series magneticcontactor according to the load motor capacity.

• The manual motor starter provides overload, phase-loss, andshort-circuit protections for the motor circuit, andincorporates a dial for flexible adjustment to match the totalload current of the motor.

• The magnetic contactor allows remote ON/OFF operation ofthe motor circuit with high frequency, and features a electricaldurability of one million operations.

• The manual motor starter and magnetic contactor areconnected via link module and mounted to a base plate.

Features• The combination starter consists of a manual motor starter

and magnetic contactor that can be assembled by the user toachieve a compact motor control circuit.

• The combination starter protects the motor from short-circuitand overcurrent accidents in the three-phase motor circuitwithin a range between 15kW at 240V AC and 22kW at 415VAC, up to a current level of 50A.

• The combination starter conforms to IEC 60947 requirementsfor magnetic motor starters and short circuit protective deviceof coordination types 1 and 2, thus greatly reducing thepossibility of an accident spreading to affect other equipment.

• The combination starter can be mounted to IEC top hat railusing the base plate.

• The modular wiring system reduces wiring works, shortensrequired mounting time, and decreases the mounting area.

IEC 60947-4-1

Type 1:Co-ordination requiers that, under short-circuit conditions, thecontactor or starter shall cause no danger to persons or installationand may not be suitable for further service without repair andreplacement of parts.

Type 2:Co-ordination requiers that, under short-circuit conditions, thecontactor or starter shall cause no danger to persons or installationand shall be suitable for further use. The risk of contact welding isrecognized, in which case the manufacturer shall indicate themeasures to be taken as regards the maintenance of the equipment.

Note to mount an MMS and contactorWhen the manual motor starter and magnetic contactor areconfigured as a combination starter, the nameplate ends upfacing the wrong direction because the coil terminal of themagnetic contactor faces downward. Use the followingprocedure to turn the nameplate upside down.

For SC-E02 to SC-E05 magnetic contactors• Insert a flat-blade screwdriver between the arc-chamber of

the S phase or V phase and the terminal screw, and lift thearc-chamber to remove it.

• After removing the cover, turn the cover 180 degrees (top tobottom), then re-mount it onto the magnetic contactor.

• Align the cover with the top and bottom terminals and pressit on firmly by hand.

For SC-E1 to SC-E3 magnetic contactors• Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws

securing the front and back bodies.• Remove the front body and turn it 180 degrees (top to

bottom), then re-mount it with the screws.• Make sure that no foreign matter enters the interior of the

magnetic contactor during this removal/re-mountingprocedure.
