INTRODUCTION

“esa Data & Polar Analyzer”, IN AN EASY AND AUTOMATIC WAY PROVIDES ALL NECESSARY DATA TO THE COMPREHENSION OF PERFORMANCES AND OF THE NAVIGATION DONE. It is always possible in a total automatic way, to import performances’ files generated by esa, and analyze them with respect to set up tgt's file, both in correlation to full polar run, respect to WMG, and other navigation recorded with your Apple’s device. Importing file is very easy, is like to open a file in windows, and the program automatically does all the calculations, giving you the results both graphically and in numbers. Through the different pages of the program is possible to make the following analysis:

•  Esa polar data calculated with respect to set tgt yard polar. •  Graphical comparison analysis of polar data calculated by esa and set yard polar. •  VMG analysis, sheet where are graphically compared boat speed, TWA and WMG respect to

yard’s respective. •  Logging, sheet for telemetric analysis of navigation data, you can display regatta or navigation

route, (even with Google Maps), and analyze the performances. •  Start procedure, sheet for telemetric analysis of starting data, both visual and analytic analysis of

starting moments. •  One data sheet. •  Possibilities for further analysis, due to Excel customizability.

First page is where to upload files by selecting the buttons at the top and where is possible to make a comparison between numerical numbers of yard polar and those of esa’s (after interpolation analysis, see attachment n.1) Uploading file is possible after saving them on the pc (via iTunes), it’s very easy, like opening a file in windows.

pag 4

‘GENERAL’ (OPENING SHEET)

It’s possible to choose the number of columns.

Page 5: Manual esa Data & Polar Analyzer (eng)

pag 5

Once uploaded all data in the previous page, is possible to compare the yard polar curve with the point calculated by esa, by selecting the different wind range for any direction. And all these functionalities are all automatic!! Is not necessary doing any analysis, and without any loss of time!!

‘GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS’

Page 6: Manual esa Data & Polar Analyzer (eng)

pag 6

Fundamental analysis for stick regatta, the only in the word able to provide real time results!! The program automatically elaborates the comparison between target data obtained from yard polar with the values calculated by esa during navigations; the comparison is possible for TWA tgt, Bs tgt and VMG, in bowline and stern, also distinguishable between starboard and port tack. Here below an example for the bowline, where is noticeable a small performance difference between target (as actually happened in reality) Thoroughness of collected data has been certified by several compared analysis with the help of professional sailors. Values’ sweep depends in this case from the scarcity of collected data ( 4 stick regatta).

‘LOGGING’ (RECORDED DATA LOG ANALYSIS)

Page 9: Manual esa Data & Polar Analyzer (eng)

pag 9

It’s always possible upload automatically one start file, and do an both visual and analytical analysis. (see two quadrants on the left); moving the cursor in the center, data are analyzed and shown on the left. The arrows show wind direction. You can do debriefing or see your start immediately.

pag 9

‘START PROCEDURE’ (PRESTART DATA – UNTIL ONE MINUTE AFTER THE START)

There’s an extremely practice way to extract data’s folders via iTunes; from them you have to choose each time which file to upload in the analysis. Select the device in iTunes, go to app section, select esa Regatta and the four folder to be saved, save them anywhere you prefer, at this point you can use data for the analysis.

ATTACHMENT 1: PROGRAM ACCESS AND MACRO ACTIVATION (1/8)

The disposable program on the site is made by 2 files:

PolarAnalysis.xls (the main file of the program) •  XlXtrFun.xll (library file which contains the interpolation functions to change the yard data and polar

in Esa polar format) •  LICENSE FILE IS MISSING. IT WILL BE GIVEN ONCE THE PUSHCHARGE HAS BEEN

COMPLETED

•  At the opening of the program let macros run

• NOTE FOR EACH PC AT THE FIRST ACCESS LE LICENCE IS NECESSARY (MAX 3 LICENSE FOR EACH PUSHCHARGE. See next page

Select: - Options button - Activate content for macro

ATTACHMENT 1: PROGRAM’S INSTRUCTION IN EXCEL (3/8)

At the first opening of the program, Excel creates a link to the library “XlXtrFun.xll”. If for some reason this wont work, or if at the start of the yard polar in esa polar, the program will show an error, so it’s possible to add manually this component, simply by following the instructions below: For EXCEL 2007 : 1.  Click on Microsoft Office Button ,then on Excel options. 2.  Click on category Additional Component. 3.  In manage folder, click on Additional components then click go. 4.  To upload an additional component, follow the procedure below: 5.  In disposable additional component box, click on control box nearby additional component which you want

to upload, then OK. If the component does not appear, go to browse, go to the program’s folder, then selectXlXtrFun.xll and OK.

For EXCEL 2010 : For activate an additional component in Excel 1.  Go to File, click on option and then on Additional component 2.  In manage folder, click on Additional components then click go. It will be shown the dialog window

Additional Component. 3.  In disposable additional component box, click on control box nearby additional component which you want

to upload, then OK. If the component does not appear, go to browse, go to the program’s folder, then selectXlXtrFun.xll and OK.

From General sheet is possible to start all the analysis, only telemetry analysis is possible to be managed from Logging and Start procedure sheets. It’s necessary to access in the folders uploaded via iTunes (see pg 10) In general sheet we find these buttons: “Load Polar Files”, by selecting it uploads polar’s data file which contains both yard’s and esa’s data acquired during navigation. All these data are saved in “data” sheet.

Graphical analysis compares navigation data with yard’s target. It’s possible that for some wind intensity are not enough or invalid data. In these case the program says to the user that all polar’s selected values are null. (see also pg. 5) VMG Analysis. Even for this analysis is necessary upload before a polarEsa file… VMG analysis compares yard’s polar data (Boat Speed, True Wind Angle, Vmg) whit polar data (left and right handled). It is possible upload more Esa polar file at the same time, or selecting together in order to obtain a better VMG from those different files.

“Load polar file”. Pressing this button Esa polar data file is loaded, in which there are both yard polar data and those acquired during navigation by Esa. These data are saved in Data sheet. In Logging sheet there are: •  A dashboard where are displayed several navigation data. •  A 2d map, where is shown the path of the boat. With the underneath bar is possible to run along all the path and analyze second by second the data in the dashboard.

• Path is displayed in Google Maps, with “Refresh Google Maps” you refresh the map, in particular the positioning of the boat; with “Zoom +” and “Zoom –“ you change the dimension of the map, with the button on the extreme right you can change the kind of the map.

• There’s an arrow which displays wind provenience at the considered moment.

Very Important: Once the program PolarAnalysis.xls is closed, all data will be lost, and at the sequent re opening is necessary re-load all data for doing analysis.

Selected Files By selecting more than one file, ESA will show a sum of the selected logs.

“Load start data”. Pressing this button Esa polar data file is loaded, in which there are both yard polar data and those acquired during navigation by Esa. These data are saved in Data sheet. The functionalities are similar to those in Logging sheet, data in the dashboard are mainly referred to time and distances during the countdown and the minute after the start. With two arrows are indicated the provenience of the wind and the North. Very Important: Once the program PolarAnalysis.xls is closed, all data will be lost, and at the sequent re opening is necessary re-load all data for doing analysis.
