Your AMILO Pro V

Your AMILO Pro V…offers you innovative technology and ergonomic design. This makes yournotebook a reliable, convenient mobile PC.

Your notebook is available in several different versions. Most of the sections in this manualapply to all models ‑ any differences are pointed out separately. Some of the illustrations andfeatures in this manual may differ from your model and are for guidance only.

Your operating system (e.g. Microsoft Windows XP) has already been preinstalledand optimally configured so that you can be up and running from the momentyou switch on your notebook for the first time.

Your notebook features the very latest technology so that you get the best performance from yourcomputing experience. Depending on which model you own, you have access to:

• Up to 2 GB of main memory (RAM)• a multi-format DVD drive with double layer support to watch DVD movies

and record your own CDs and DVDs• an S-Video Out socket for connecting your notebook to your television• depending on notebook model, a memory card slot for transferring photos,

music and videos quickly onto your notebook.• four USB ports which provide easy expansion with webcams, game pads, printers and more• an internal modem for connecting to the Internet• a PC card or ExpressCard slot in which you can run a type I or type II PC

card or an ExpressCard/34 or ExpressCard/54• a SIM card slot in which you can run a SIM card• an integrated audio controller and two stereo loudspeakers for genuine listening pleasure. You

can even connect a microphone and external speakers for still better performance.With the user-friendly BIOS-Setup you can control the hardware of your notebook and protect yoursystem better against unauthorised access by using the powerful password features.

► Slide the release button in direction of thearrow (1) and open the LCD screen (2).

► Press the ON/OFF switch (1) to switchthe notebook on.The power-on indicator is lit.

If you have set a password, you must enter this when asked to do so in order tostart the operating system. Further information can be found in the "ProfessionalNotebook" operating manual, "Security functions" chapter.

Switching off the Notebook► Close all programs and shut down your operating system (please see operating system manual).

If the notebook cannot be shut down properly, press the Suspend/Resumekey for approx. four seconds. The notebook switches off. However, anydata which have not been saved may be lost.

► Close the LCD screen so that itlocks into place.

Key combinationsThe following description of key combinations refers to functions when using MicrosoftWindows. Some of the following key combinations may not function in otheroperating systems and with some device drivers.

Key combinations are entered as follows:

► Press and hold the first key in the combination.► While holding the first key down, press the other key or keys in the combination.

If an external keyboard is being used, instead of pressing the Fn key, youshould press Ctrl + Alt Gr or Ctrl + Alt simultaneously.

Starts the online help for the application currently active.

Switches the notebook into the energy-saving mode.

If an external monitor is connected, the monitor on which the output is to bedisplayed can be selected with this key combination.

You can opt to use:

• just the notebook’s LCD screen• just the external monitor• both the LCD screen and the external monitorScreen blankingFn + F4Screen blanking

This key combination switches the LCD screen off. The next input switchesthe display on again.

Switch loudspeakers on and offFn + F5Loudspeakers

This key combination switches your notebook’s loudspeakers off and on.

This key combination reduces the volume of the integrated loudspeakers.

This key combination raises the volume of the integrated loudspeakers.

Country and keyboard settingsIf you want to change the country and keyboard settings, proceed as follows:Country and keyboard settings

► Click on Start – Control Panel.► Double-click on Regional and Language Options.

The current settings are displayed in the Regional Options tab.► Select the country settings you want to use.► Click on Apply.► Click on the Details… button in the Languages tab.► Click on Add… to add other keyboard layouts to the selection.► In the Default input language field, choose the keyboard layout you want to

use when you start your notebook.► Click on Apply and confirm with OK.

Easy Launch keysEasy Launch keys

Your notebook is equipped with three Easy Launch keys. You can start the followingapplications or functions by pressing a single key.

Radio components: Wireless LAN / Bluetooth / UMTS (optional)This Easy Launch key starts the LaunchManager. The radio components activated in theBIOS Setup can be turned on and off individually.

If the LaunchManager program is not installed on your system, all the radio componentsactivated in the BIOS Setup can be turned on an off with this Easy Launch key.Radio components, Easy Launch key

anti-slip cloth on this surface to prevent the notebook from being scratched.

SIM cardFollow the instructions supplied by the provider of the SIM card.

► Open the SIM card holder (1).► Push the SIM card (2) into the holder (3).

Make sure the contacts of the SIM cardpoint towards the inside of the notebook.

► Re-close the SIM card holder.► Lock the SIM card holder by gently pushing the holder in the opposite direction

to that shown by the arrow on the holder.You will feel the SIM card holder lock into place.

► Close the cover of the SIM card slot.► Install the battery again (see "Battery: inserting", Page 12).► Turn the notebook the right way up and place it on a flat surface.► Reconnect the cables that you disconnected previously.

Radio components: Wireless LAN/ Bluetooth/UMTSWireless LANBluetoothUMTS

The installation of a wireless LAN module not approved by Fujitsu Siemens Comput-ers GmbH voids the permits issued for this device (see chapter "Technical data", Page 19).

Depending on the device variant, wireless LAN, Bluetooth and/or UMTS may be integrated in yournotebook. On delivery, WLAN components are switched on, Bluetooth components off.

Switching the radio components on and off► Press the Easy Launch key for the radio components, to switch the radio components on or off.

or► Press the Fn + F10 key combination to switch the radio components on or off.The radio component indicator lights up when one or more radio components are switched on.

If you switch the radio components off, the Bluetooth module and the UMTS andwireless LAN transmission unit (antenna) are also switched off.

You can turn the radio components on or off either individually or together.

In the BIOS Setup you can specify which radio components can be switched onand off with the corresponding Easy Launch key or with the Fn + F10 keycombination. Only components activated in the BIOS Setup can be switched onand off with the Fn + F10 combination or with the corresponding Easy Launchkey. Radio components disabled in the BIOS-Setup, on the other hand, cannot becontrolled with the Easy Launch key or the key combination.

You can enable or disable radio components individually in the BIOS Setup.

To do this you must have set at least a supervisor password.

Observe the additional security instructions for devices with radio com-ponents provided in the "Security" manual.

Further information on using the wireless LAN is provided in the online help for yourwireless LAN software and in the "Wireless LAN" manual. The "Wireless LAN" manualcan be found on the "Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD provided with your computer.

You can find more information on how to use Bluetooth on the CD youreceived with your Bluetooth software.

You can obtain more information on UMTS from your service provider.

Removing and installing componentsduring servicing

Only qualified technicians should repair your notebook. Unauthorisedopening or incorrect repair may greatly endanger the user (electric shock,fire risk) and will invalidate your warranty.Components

Servicing

You may remove and install the components described in this chapter yourselfafter consulting the Hotline/Help Desk.

If you remove and install components without consulting the Hotline/Help Desk,then the warranty of your notebook will be voided.

Notes on installing and removing boardsand components• Switch the notebook off and pull the power plug out of the mains socket.• Remove the battery.• Take care when you use the locking mechanisms on the battery and any other component.• Never use sharp objects such as screwdrivers, scissors or knives as leverage to remove covers.

NotesBoardESD

Boards with electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD) are marked with the labelshown.

When handling boards fitted with ESDs, you must always observe the followingpoints:

• You must always discharge static build up (e.g. by touching a groundedobject) before working.

• The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges.• Remove the power plug from the mains supply before inserting or removing

boards containing ESDs.• Always hold boards with ESDs by their edges.• Never touch pins or conductors on boards fitted with ESDs.

Hard diskThe hard disk is the most important storage medium of your notebook. You can work considerablyfaster and more efficiently if you copy applications and files from CDs to your hard disk.

Removing and installing components during servicing

Removing the hard disk► Switch your notebook off.

Hard disk

► Close the LCD screen.► Unplug the mains plug of the mains adapter from the mains socket.► Disconnect all cables connected to the notebook.► Turn your notebook over and place it on a stable, sturdy, flat surface. If necessary, lay an

anti-slip cloth on this surface to prevent the notebook from being scratched.► Remove the battery (see "Removing the battery", Page 12).

► Remove the screws (1).► Lift off the cover (2).► Pull the hard disk out of the bay in the

direction of the arrow (3).

► Push the hard disk into the hard diskbay (1) in a straight line.

► Position the cover (2).► Secure the cover with the screws (3).

► Install the battery again (see "Battery: inserting", Page 12).► Turn the notebook the right way up and place it on a flat surface.► Reconnect the cables that you disconnected previously.
