ISSUE TWO

Celebrating the impact you are making at MansfieldOur commitment to encourage the brightest students to apply to Mansfield remains undiminished. To do this it is important that we provide the facilities and learning environment to meet the demands of the 21st-century scholar. Over the past year, your support has helped us make improvements and carry out projects that are enhancing the student experience at Mansfield. In this report, we hope you will enjoy reading about what has been made possible.

Perhaps the most significant development to have taken place recently has been the newly completed East Range Project. Returning students have been making the most of the new facilities, which have been hugely supported by alumni in recent years. In addition, you have helped support: new prizes to recognise academic achievement; access work to encourage applications to Mansfield from schools that have not historically sent many students to Oxford; and teaching, to ensure that we retain Fellows who are leaders in their field.

Another success was the recent Telethon, which took place just before the start of Michaelmas 2014. Our team of eight Student Callers took to the phones with great enthusiasm and enjoyed speaking to many of you about your time at Mansfield and what College is like today. Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak to one of our Callers, for the careers advice you offered them and the memories you shared. Special thanks to all of you who chose to support College by making a donation to the campaign.

We are very proud of our growing donor community and the difference you are making to Mansfield students. We hope some of the success stories and achievements featured here will also inspire those of you who haven’t supported Mansfield for some time or who are yet to give a gift, to consider how you might help the College in the future. As this edition of Donor News demonstrates, all gifts, of whatever size, make a significant positive difference to Mansfield. Thank you for your support.

Thank you to everyone who took a call during the 2014 Telethon. Our dedicated student call team spoke to hundreds of you as part of the two-week campaign, during which you helped raise over £98,000 – making it the most successful Mansfield Telethon to date. This year’s priority areas included the Love Lane Building, Access and Outreach, and the General Fund.

Development Officer, Eleanor Crawford, caught up with Student Caller, Joanna Hawkins (History, 2012), at the end of the campaign.

Why did you apply to be a Student Caller?

I was very interested in getting the opportunity to speak to Mansfield alumni and finding out what they have gone on to do since leaving Oxford. I am involved in College life through the JCR Bench and as an Access Ambassador, so I’m very passionate about Mansfield’s current projects and plans for future developments. I wanted to share this with alumni and support Mansfield.

What was your favourite part of this year’s Telethon?

I really loved speaking to alumni about how their lives have panned out. I am a historian so it was especially great speaking to those who studied History and have gone on to do things as diverse as pursuing academia, journalism or even becoming an artist.

What was your least favourite part?

It was very tiring and it was frustrating if you were faced with a long chain of answering machines! I think sometimes I was so excited when a real person answered the phone that the person on the other end must have wondered why I was so happy to speak to them.

You must have heard many interesting stories. Is there a particular one that stands out?

I spoke to a man who had met his wife, a fellow Historian, in the Radcliffe Camera. It was such an unbelievably romantic and ‘Oxford’ story, it was lovely to hear.

Have you received any useful careers advice?

Yes, it was wonderful to get so many different perspectives on life after Oxford. I think the best advice I received was to do something I’m passionate about and enjoy – many of the alumni I spoke to had taken a change of career to eventually arrive at that point.

What have you learnt about Mansfield that you did not know before you became a Caller?

I wasn’t aware that Mansfield had always been characterised by its close community feel, something that is still going strong today. Also, that the JCR President used to have the Tower Room in the main building as their bedroom!

Bob Coates PrizeFollowing the sad passing of the highly respected Dr Bob Coates, in October 2013, a new prize in Mathematics has been established in his memory, thanks to the kind support of Maths alumni.

Dr Bob Coates first came to Mansfield in 1986 to cover Janet Dyson’s maternity leave, and became a stipendiary lecturer in 1989. He stayed on until his retirement in 2003 and was an excellent mathematician and lecturer. The new ‘Bob Coates Prize in Mathematics’ will recognise academic achievement, as well as act as a fitting tribute to a much-admired teacher and colleague.

Thanks to the generosity of alumni, we have recently reached the target needed to endow the Prize fully, meaning that £150 can be awarded each year in perpetuity.

New women’s First VIII boat makes a splash

Thank you Leavers of 2014Each year we are offering Leavers the opportunity to make a lasting legacy to future Mansfield students by supporting the Leavers’ Gift. Thank you to the 97 Leavers who were involved in 2014.

This year’s gift amount, as agreed by the JCR, was £20.14 to commemorate the year. The money has helped support the purchase of new oak dining chairs to be used in the Chapel and Old Hall. As part of the East Range Project, some of the original oak chairs have been fully restored and reupholstered. The new chairs have been carefully crafted to be in keeping with the original furniture. Each chair supported by the Leavers’ Gift will soon feature a ‘2014 Leavers’ plaque to recognise the year group.

In spring 2014, the women’s First VIII crew took to the water in their new boat, which was purchased thanks to a generous donation from Yang-Wahn Hew (Modern History, 1997). Despite the ominous patches of rain in the morning, around 50 rowers and members of Mansfield went down to the boathouse to see the new boat for the naming ceremony.

The boat is named Wing Yi, Yang-Wahn Hew’s daughter’s middle name, which means ‘Happy and Intelligent’. Tim Lattimore (Modern History, 1997) kindly provided pro-bono support with the boat graphics, which involved applying the Chinese calligraphy to the side of the boat.

Women’s Captain, Alice Willcox (Geography, 2012), commented:‘I was so excited to hear that we were receiving a new boat. We trained so hard as a crew all year and so to race in Summer Eights in a brand new W1 boat really was one of the highlights of my time at Mansfield. The boat has allowed us to focus on our technique and we were able to get shoes that fit, which was great! We even got a bump in Summer Eights – the first time for a Mansfield women’s crew in two years and I’m sure we will be able to keep moving up Division 2.’

Student Support and Access - £45,706We want to ensure that the brightest and most talented students consider applying to Mansfield, no matter what their financial circumstances or personal background. By supporting access you are helping us reach out to those from areas that have not historically sent students to Oxford. In addition, you have helped support a number of prizes to recognise achievement, and the Hardship Fund for those students who find themselves in unforeseen financial difficulty.

Buildings and Environment - £262,176The recently completed East Range Project, which was made possible with the help of Mansfield alumni, has transformed this area of College for the benefit of all. The new refectory, named ‘The Crypt’, is already proving a popular

meeting space for students, and the refurbished Tower rooms have been given a new lease of life – along with a much-needed lift for access. Thank you for helping to make this Project a reality.

Teaching and Research - £5,707We are passionate about attracting and retaining academics who are leaders in their field. Thank you for helping us to do so by supporting teaching and research. Our long-term ambition would be to endow our Fellowships fully, so every gift you make to this important area is greatly appreciated.

Unrestricted - £127,956Each year, an increasing number of you are deciding to support College by making an unrestricted gift to the Mansfield Matters General Fund. We are extremely grateful to you for supporting College in this way as it provides the flexibility for Mansfield to direct funding to where it is most needed. In the past year your support has been used to help fund the developments in the East Range, as well as completing the full refurbishment of the bathrooms in the John Marsh Building.
