Early Years Foundation Stage Lead Learner: Sarah Wiggill - Little Acorns Class

Little Acorns is led by Sarah and her team. It caters for nursery and reception aged children. The classroom provides a bright, child friendly and stimulating environment where learning takes a play-based approach, with elements of structured activities. The pupils have a mixture of individual, small group and class

sessions.

Little Acorns has free flow between the indoor classroom and outdoor environment. Each child has their own learning journal; which documents their progress and achievements throughout their time in the foundation stage. The journal uses a combination of pictures and observations from both

school and home.  The Early Years Department at Manor Green follows the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage profile—a curriculum for children aged 0-5 years.

Lower school - Key Stage 1 Department Lead Learner: Cheryl Gallon

Lilac, Elm, Maple and Oak Classes

The department is led and managed by Cheryl Gallon. Each class has a class teacher and a minimum of 3 support staff, which are responsible for tracking the delivery of the personal learning journey and providing outstanding teaching and learning for all pupils.

Pupils are placed in chronologically aged classes and follow the National Curriculum, which is modified and personalised to meet their needs. Each class has a vibrant learning environment that promotes teaching, learning and creativity. Role play areas and displays within the class reflect the current topic being taught and celebrate children’s achievements and build on their learning. In addition all classes have shared access to an outdoor classroom, to extend learning opportunities.

Children in Lower School access the National Curriculum in an exciting, engaging and creative way, delivered by highly skilled class teams. Personalised activities such as rebound therapy, hydrotherapy, soft play, light and sound, horse riding and play therapy are offered to pupils, who require this.

The children participate in whole school events and department events, such as Sports day, educational visits and creative workshops, that encourage working together and to provide the children with a breadth of experiences.

Specialist Classes for Pupils with Additional Needs.(Social Communication Difficulties and complex learning needs).

Lead Learner: Katie Paddock

Ash, Cherry, Magnolia and Willow Classes Katie Paddock is the Lead Learner for the Specialist Classes for pupils with additional needs. At Manor Green we understand that children with ASC achieve their potential and feel happy when their environment, learning, communication and routines are structured and personalised to meet their individual needs. We believe that a consistent approach to teaching and learning, structured classroom environments and cross-curricular use of visual supports enable the pupils to be independent and engage in learning. Every child in the specialist classes has complex learning needs and as such requires a high level of personalised learning with a higher staff to pupil ratio. The activities throughout the school day are structured around a highly individual and personalised timetable which is child led and tailored to the child’s needs.  Children in specialist classes follow a curriculum that is relevant, broad and balanced to their needs. Each class follows a thematic approach to teaching and learning which changes half termly. The classes follow the same themes and topics as the generic classes in each year group. The curriculum focuses on four key areas Communication, Core Subjects (English, Maths and Science), Foundation subjects and Physical, Personal and Sensory Development.  In addition, children have access to a multi-sensory programme including use of the light and sound room, sensory circuits, outdoor learning environments and soft play. All children have personal, social and emotional targets which help develop skills in expressing and exploring likes and dislikes, high interests and friendships with others. Individual children are assessed by the Occupational Therapist for sensory integration programmes which area implemented throughout the school day. Hydrotherapy and rebound are key strategies used to develop physical, social and communication skills.

Pupils are placed in chronologically aged and mixed ability classes. All classes follow the National Curriculum which is personalised to meet children’s individual needs. The classrooms are set up to provide a safe and stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on creativity and cross-curricular learning. Educational visits, topic based theme days and participation in whole-school events are also used to maximise learning opportunities through memorable experiences.

The Curriculum

At Manor Green we have three curricular -

• Informal curriculum

• Semi-formal curriculum

• Formal curriculum

These curricular take into account pupils’ learning needs and stages of development; pupils may therefore move from one level to the next at any point in their school career. Our curriculum is based on two factors: communication and cognition. These are the fundamental structure underpinning the informal, semi-formal and formal curricula.

The National Curriculum forms part of the whole school curriculum. The National Curriculum Programmes of study for each subject are followed where they are relevant and accessible. However, the suggested Programs of studies may be implemented to different Key stages due

the needs of our pupils. The whole curriculum at Manor Green includes a much broader offer for pupils in terms of supporting and developing our pupils in areas of attention and communication, physical development, self- care and independence and specific therapy the pupils may need. Teachers keep detailed records on individual’s progress using a whole school system, which ensures continuity and development throughout the school. Each pupil has a “Record of Achievement” and an end of year progress report which contains evidence of improvement and accomplishment throughout their time in school.  The fostering of positive attitudes by parents/carers and teachers to a pupil’s learning cannot be over-emphasised. Pupils are encouraged from an early age to evaluate their work and celebrate achievement. English

At Manor Green, English has a high priority. The skills children learn in reading and writing, speaking and listening are directly transferable to all areas of the curriculum and are so important for children to succeed.

Our curriculums have been developed to meet to the national curriculum (2014) and we have worked carefully as a school to ensure that our English curriculum is relevant, robust and appropriate for all our children. Every child is an individual; we recognise the importance of promoting a holistic, sensory based curriculum to support pupil development. Children need to succeed at their own pace but maximising their opportunity to achieve their absolute potential is reflected in our approach to the curriculum.

Where ever possible, English should have strong cross-curricular links. We believe in thematic learning based around good quality text embodying the

early skills needed to allow children to meet every aspect of the new targets for spelling, grammar and handwriting in the new English curriculum.  We want to work in complete partnership with the child’s home and any other agencies to ensure that early reading, writing and speaking and listening is developed and children have a positive view of themselves as readers and writers.

PhonicsThe majority of the children follow a daily synthetic phonics approach called Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds. Children are taught a combination of initial sounds, segmenting, and blending and whole word recognition. Children, who are identified as possibly becoming sight readers, are given a personalised programme to cater for their individual needs.

MathsAt Manor Green we aim to inspire children by giving them a lively sense of interest and enjoyment in mathematics, with a developing understanding of its practical and creative use in everyday life.  The Long Term Planning and personalised Targets ensure that all pupils are introduced to a wide range of mathematical skills in the areas of number, shape space and measures, and data handling with an overall emphasis on using and applying of those skills.

12

ScienceScience helps children to develop their ideas and way of working so that they can make sense of the world in which they live. Through a highly practical and sensory curriculum, our children are encouraged to develop and explore their own ideas. They learn a range of investigative skills and develop knowledge across a range of scientific areas; including plants, animals, materials, light, sound and seasonal changes.

Personal, Social and Health Emotional Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is an integral part of learning at Manor Green throughout each day and across the curriculum. Personalised learning and PSHE targets allow pupils to work on the skills they need to become as independent as possible. Activities such as clean your teeth, get dressed and undressed, and eat with cutlery are all vitally important. Pupils at Manor Green are supported in all areas of personal development and are given sufficient time to learn to become as independent as possible in all personal care areas.

We hold weekly department assemblies featuring specific social and emotional aspects of learning linked to the schools whole school PSHE cycle. These are followed up with related activities as a class, small group, in pairs or on a 1:1 personalised basis according to need.

ComputingIt is important that all pupils have access to computing. Computing is delivered across all subjects as a cross-curricular tool as well as in Computing lessons throughout the year.   Children have access to a range of equipment including, interactive whiteboards, PC’s and other word processor equipment/keyboards, I-pads, cameras and electronic toys.  These are adapted to allow equal opportunities for all pupils this includes equipment purchased to meet individual needs. All children are also supported to learn how to keep safe online.

Physical Education Manor Green regards physical education with the utmost importance. It is essential for all pupils to be physically active and to develop in physical confidence. P.E. is a practical subject which enables all pupils to participate in enjoyable, exciting and challenging activities. At Manor Green P.E. comes in many forms, such as P.E. lessons, horse-riding, swimming and hydrotherapy. Many children also follow specific physiotherapy programmes designed to improve mobility and strengthen specific areas of the body. P.E. provides the opportunities for the development of physical, personal, social and intellectual skills. P.E. promotes the undertaking of exercise that can be continued into adulthood as part of a healthy lifestyle.

At Manor Green, R.E. is inclusive of world faiths.  We celebrate and learn about the belief systems of our children giving precedence to Christianity in line with the West Sussex Guidance.Throughout the school year we celebrate festivals from a range of faiths and cultures, as reflected in our school population. Such festivals include Diwali, Harvest, Christmas and the birth of Jesus, Chinese New Year and the stories of Islam.

We learn about the Old Testament stories of Joseph, Noah, Jonah and the Whale, the miracles performed by Jesus, and Creation. We celebrate the miracle of His resurrection at Easter.

Our learning is creative and includes visits to Christian Churches, Mosques and Hindu Temples.  We teach through the media of art; drama; dance; food technology, and plan visits both from religious speakers, and to a range of food outlets and restaurants. We celebrate through wonderful assemblies which incorporate visual effects; drama; and dance and which stimulate the children to enjoy and understand the cultures and beliefs of different faiths.

 Achievement

Individual achievement and staff expectation at school is high and is apparent both through the quality of displays around the school and in each pupil’s annual blue folder. Pupils are regularly assessed throughout the year against the Foundation Stage Profile and our stages of assessment which have replaced the P Level and NC levels. Most pupils work towards or within levels of the National Curriculum, some pupils are exempt from statutory assessment at the end of each National Curriculum Key Stage. Each year all pupils are formally reviewed across all the subjects of the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage Curriculum, through the annual review of the EHCP procedure.

Pupil Premium15

Page 16: MANOR GREEN PRIMARY Web viewManor Green Primary School caters for pupils aged ranging two to eleven years. All our pupils have learning difficulties and additional needs

Pupil Premium is money used to ensure that all pupils regardless of their situation are able to access the same provision, opportunities and enrichment. We use the grant to ensure that disadvantaged pupils achieve in line with their peers.

Homework

Homework tasks are differentiated and balanced, to allow our pupils share fully in the work of the class and cater for their individual learning needs. Homework of a more formal nature may be set if this has been agreed at the Parent/Carer Consultation Evenings or at the EHCP meeting.

See our homework policy for further details.

Sex EducationSex education in the school complies with the requirements of the Education Reform Act 1994 and the school curriculum aims to: Raise students’ self-esteem and confidence, especially in their relationships with others.  Help students to understand their sexual feelings and behaviour so that they can lead fulfilling and enjoyable lives.  Develop skills, language, decision-making, choice, and assertiveness that are necessary in a range of situations.  Promote acceptable and appropriate behaviour in public and private situations giving practice of strategies, which reduce the risk of exploitation, misunderstanding and abuse.  Provide knowledge and confidence needed to be an active member of society. A copy of the school’s policy document is available on request.

Extra-Curricular Activities and Extended Schools.

We offer a range of out of after school clubs and work in partnership with Springboard and Horsham District Council Aiming High to offer additional clubs during the holidays. The extended schools programme is available to pupils Year 1 and upwards.

Discipline

Discipline in the school is not a major issue and can most accurately be described as that which would be exercised by any caring parent/carer. The majority of disciplinary issues are tackled in a positive manner, whereby staff focus on and celebrate individual strengths and achievements. Negative behaviour is discouraged unobtrusively to negate any attention seeking behaviour. The school has developed a behaviour policy, which gives strategies for dealing with challenging behaviour and a mechanism for record keeping. If a child requires a behaviour programme, parents and carers are asked to attend a support meeting to agree the aims of the programme. Parents/Carers are also asked to sign and keep a copy of the behaviour programme. A copy of the school’s behaviour and discipline policy is available in the school office.

Pastoral Care & Family Partnership17

Page 18: MANOR GREEN PRIMARY Web viewManor Green Primary School caters for pupils aged ranging two to eleven years. All our pupils have learning difficulties and additional needs

The school sees the importance in developing and strengthening family partnerships. The aim of the school is to promote a close working relationship between home and school and to foster a feeling of community throughout the school. The Assistant Headteacher is responsible for family support. Our Higher Level Teaching Assistants, Jan Smith and Becky Bevan have the responsibility for co-ordinating and strengthening our partnership with families. We offer a supportive environment for parents and carers to come into school to meet. We also offer a variety of workshops including topics such as signing and working with challenging behaviour. These will be advertised on our weekly newsletter throughout the year. The school organises three consultation meetings in the academic year and parents/carers are expected to attend their child’s EHCP review which is held annually.  Teachers are expected to communicate with parents and carers on a daily basis using the home/school books. Parents and carers are asked, as a minimum, to sign the book on a daily basis to acknowledge receipt of the book. Friends of Manor Green. Friends support both Manor Green Primary and Manor Green College by raising much needed funds for extracurricular activities and equipment for the pupils.  They have two major fundraising events in the school calendar being a Summer and Winter Fair. Friends would very much welcome new members, fresh ideas and the support of every parent/carer or family members and friends. New members are always welcome at the meetings. If you would like to know more about helping or supporting Friends, please contact theChair for Friends, via the School Office.  Equal Opportunities

The whole ethos of our school contributes to a general awareness of equal opportunities and multiculturalism. All staff are involved and have a part to play in this process. An effective policy for the school can only be achieved by raising awareness and continued review of good practice. The school has a social, moral, cultural and spiritual policy which can be viewed at any time.   School Meals

We have been awarded a Healthy School Status. The achievement recognises our whole school approach to learning, particularly within the Personal, Social and Health Education sections. As such, we offer a highly nutritious and good value for money lunch time menu. This is
