Deputy Principal Waste Audit Wednesday 8th May 2019 -Years 3 & 4

On Wednesday 8th May, Year 3 and Year 4 students will be participating in our first Manly West Waste Audit. This complements the work Stage 2 are doing on sustainability in Science. Students will be helping to sort and categorise the waste from the school bins. They will be looking at what our

rubbish consists of, where it comes from and the impact it has on our environment. Following on from the waste audit we will be looking at how we can reduce our waste and recycle more, here at Manly West. All students will be wearing gloves or using tongs at all times and they will wash their hands once they have finished their session. Students may bring their own gloves. If you have any concerns or do not wish for your child to participate please let your child’s teacher know. Thank you to Mrs Angie Penn and Mrs Beth Dowdle for their organisation of this project which makes learning active and meaningful for our students.

Year 5 Opportunity Class 2020 Notes regarding the application process were sent home with Year 4 students last term. Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and talented students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the

Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31st July 2019. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you will need to apply online. Detailed instructions on how to apply online are now available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

The application website opened on Tuesday 30th April 2019 and closes on Friday 17th May 2019. You must apply online by the due date. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance. Uniform Uniform change over period - in the first 2 weeks of Term 2 students may wear either summer or winter uniform

as the weather dictates. In Week 3, beginning Monday 13th May, winter uniform is to be worn. Maths Olympiad APSMO Inc. has been operating since 1987. Every year, schools

from all over Australia, New Zealand and other neighbouring countries take part in the APSMO Maths Olympiad. Maths Olympiad consists of five separate contests and has

approximately one month apart between May and September. The overall aim is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem solving skills. This year, Manly West will run Maths Olympiad during lunchtimes and students who are selected to participate and choose to compete will be expected to commit to the five contests.

Manly West Before & After School Care

GREAT NEWS! We have expanded our sessions from 150 to 170 children this term with the

utilisation of the school STEAM room. Thank you to Ms Lee for sharing this space with us. We will be using this as an activity based room with mixed age group activities. Children will be able to

volunteer to be involved. We will take groups of children to this room, generally 8am – 8:45am and 4pm – 5:45pm, so your child may not be in their normal pick-up room in the afternoon! This week our theme is Lego and we also have an incursion by Bricks for Kids African Safari for the STEAM room only. Next week is Arts and Craft.

New Demountable Building You have probably seen the new building on the northern side of the school hall, this was purchased by BASC/P&C to accommodate an additional expansion in child numbers. We are currently in the process of ap-plying for extra places through the Department and we are hopefully looking at the expansion from Term 3.

A big thank you to all involved in this process – Julie, the P&C Committee, especially Tony Falzarano, BASC Committee and staff and Phil Perks. Wait List We will contact you as soon as your child’s place from the Wait List becomes available. There has already been lots of movement this term with the additional places available and families’ needs changing.

CENTRE NEWS Reports from our Room Leaders about some of the activities they have planned this week. Note, activities at BASC are based on the likes and interests of the children that attend and are linked to My Time, Our Place Outcomes – Children - have a strong sense of identity; are connected & contribute to their world; have a strong sense of wellbeing; are confident & involved learners; are effective communicators.

Lauren: Welcome Back to term 2! This week in K-2 Room we’ll be having a school holiday drawing

competition, Hama Beads, making Tooth Fairy Boxes and Beanie Boo colouring in. Outdoors we’ll be having an old school outdoor games rotation, Soccer, Touch Footy, Kick Tennis and play time at the coloured equipment.

Ben 3/4: We will be starting the week by ‘going old school’, discovering old classics such as Hula

Hooping, skipping as well as designing and colouring our own Hop Scotch! Building upon our drawing and communication skills, we will also be map making, continuous line drawing and experimenting how we best convey our personal ideas to staff and other children.

Aidan 5/6: In our room this week we will be brainstorming activities that they would like to be doing

this term to make them more involved in their learning. We will also be storyboarding and making movies with the iPads and making different creations with paper. Outdoors we will be playing games of

Bin Ball and Classic Catchers. You can look at the full list of programmed activities and our menus displayed in each room!

Please note we offer time and assistance to do homework every day except when an incursion is programmed or for children in the STEAM room. We encourage homework but do not enforce.

Earn & Learn is Back!

Manly West will be participating in the Woolworths Earn and Learn program once again. Collect your stickers at Woolworths and put

them into the Manly West box at Woolies in Balgowlah or into the box outside the school office.

We are able to cash in the sticker sheets for equipment for the

school. In the past, we have “earned” loads of maths, sports and

playground learning equipment. Thank

you all so much for your past and future

support!
