Year One Rugby Gala Afternoon

This Friday afternoon the Manly Roos are hosting a gala afternoon involving students from local schools who have been participating in touch rugby lessons this term. Five qualified coaches have visited us

each week to teach Year One ball handling and game skills of Viva 7s. Please consider attending this free family event at Keirle Park on Friday afternoon from 4:30 – 6pm. Your child can show you their new skills, have fun with their classmates and have a free sausage sizzle. Please see the flyer.

Expectation Cards

Students in K-6 need to collect 4 expectation cards to receive an expectation certificate. Expectation cards are issued in class to three students who demonstrate our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire. They are square in shape.

To receive a banner, students need to collect 5 certificates. Students can use a combination of expectation certificates and up to two merit certificates to achieve this.

Expectation Certificates and banners are presented to K-2 students at weekly assemblies on Fridays from 12:30 - 1:10pm and to students in Years 3-6 at fortnightly assemblies on Tuesdays from 12:30 – 1:10pm.

Scholastic order forms went home with the students last week. There are many great books on offer to be

considered as gifts in the holidays or for summertime reading. All

orders need to be placed and paid for using LOOP or by cheque made out to Scholastic Australia before or by Friday, November 13th, 2015 to ensure the books arrive well before the school holidays. Scholastic is offering a free book to new parents who register their details on the LOOP system as well as to those who are already registered on LOOP but have an increase of

$10 or more from your last order. Thank you again for supporting literacy and our library by purchasing from Scholastic. Happy reading and ordering,

We will contact you to request the sessions you need and we will inform you of availability. Notification of Absence To ensure the safety and welfare of the children in our care, BASC MUST BE NOTIFIED if a child will be

absent from a booked session. Non Notification delays our awareness of any legitimate concern for a child’s safety. Also, whilst looking for children and contacting parents, our Educators are having less time with the children in their care. Messages can be written ahead of time in each room’s ‘Parent Message Book’ or by email [email protected] (with at least 24 hrs notice). We can be contacted at late notice by phone on 9948 8113. There is a Non-Notification of Absence Charge of $11 (incl GST).

Opal Cards

The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure and the Minister for Education will announce the launch of the new School Opal card on Thursday 29 October. The School Opal card will officially launch its new online application for relevant parents and students travelling in the Opal public transport region on

Monday 2 November. The application can be found at [transportnsw.info/school-students]transportnsw.info/school-students Just like current paper travel passes, the School Opal card gives eligible students free travel to and from school on school days. However, the School Opal card makes travel simpler, because now students don’t need multiple application forms and passes if they use different transport operators within the Opal network.

Students with school travel passes this year will not need to apply for a School Opal card unless they are changing schools, campus, their home address or moving from year 2 to 3 or year 6 to 7. Those students who do not need to apply will have a School Opal card sent to your school for the beginning of the first term in 2016.

More information will follow in the next few weeks to help both your staff and students with the transition. Sincerely

The Opal Team Use public transport... plan your trip at transportnsw.info Get on board with Opal at opal.com.au

Carnival

Manly West Carnival 2015 is over. We’ve finally regrouped, recuperated and retrieved our sanity. The banners have been put away for another year and tombola jars can be forgotten. It was an incredibly successful day on all counts and the final totting up is nearly done. Watch this space. Thank you to EVERYONE in the school and local community for making the Carnival such a success. We know

we’ve made money for the school but also, and as importantly, we all came together, perhaps learnt fresh skills, met new people and the kids (and lots of adults!) had fun. This is what makes Manly West such a great place and we should be proud of what we all achieved. Thank you. P&C Annual General Meeting The AGM of the P&C is on Tuesday 24th November in the school library at 7.00pm.

This is an important meeting as it outlines what the P&C’s money will be spent on next year (school

improvements, teaching equipment, staffing etc…) and all positions on the P&C Executive and Finance Committee, as well as all sub-committee positions, become vacant. The school community has the opportunity here to vote on electing people into positions. You can nominate yourself for any role, or perhaps act as a seconder for a friend. A note will be coming home shortly with further information about all the positions and committees. It is also a really informative evening as Mrs. Organ, our principal, will speak about the year's achievements

and next year’s plans, as will our current P&C President, Fred Kelly. If you feel that you are not naturally a ‘P&C type of person’, please be reassured – we are all pretty normal (busy, sometimes scatter-brained, and very occasionally inspired). We are not officious goody-goodies – we just want to help the school be the best it can be. You do not have to put your hand up for anything, just come along, listen to what's going on and support those people who do decide to volunteer! We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 24th November. Refreshments will be served!

Thank you for your support this year. Manly West P&C

Chess competition:

On Thursday the 29th of October, fourteen

Manly West students travelled to Killarney Heights Public School for the Sydney Academy of Chess Interschool Chess Gala

Day. Eight schools from the region entered ninety one chess players in total.

Strong performances were had right across all our players from Year 1 to Year 6, who represented Manly West

beautifully. Arvend Karunagaran was our top ranked player, finishing in fourth place. Manly West’s chess players collec-tively came in third place. A special thank you to Kelly Morrison, Kimberly Howe, Rick

Hedley, Kerri Corn and Mitchell Corn for transporting the children to the tournament.
