    Level controller or float valveYou should use a level controller with float chamber if the floatcannot be mounted in the vessel. It is mounted in the pipelineand connected to the vessel by means of balancing lines. Float valves have no float chamber. The float is always moun-ted in the vessel.

    Feed and drain valves Feed valves (code letter "Z") close as the float rises and pre-vent overflowing. Drain valves (code letter "A") close as thefloat sinks and ensure that the liquid level does not drop belowthe required level.

    Mounting of float-controlled valves - Float valves for installations in vessels are mounted

    inside the vessel complete with float. - Float valves for installation on vessels are flange-

    mounted on the outer skin of the vessel. - Float valves for installation in pipe lines are installed in the

    feed/drain pipe. The float lever either projects into the vessel or the float move-mens is transferred by means of a cable.

    Flow direction of float valves The flow direction determines the mounting arrangement andtype of float lever used:- horizontal, flow direction towards or away from the vessel

    code letter "w"- vertical, flow direction upwards

    code letter "o") - vertical, flow direction downwards

    (code letter "u")

    Selecting valve type and nominal diameter To select the valve type and determine the required nominaldiameter you should calculate first the operating performanceparameter Kv based on the maximum operating values and mi-nimum pressure drop Dp. You should choose a valve having aKvs value which is 30 % greater than the calculated Kv figure.

    Selecting the operating pressure range The maximum operating pressure of your system must bewithin the operating pressure range of the valve; if not, thefloat valve will not close or open.

    Pressure inside the vessel Check whether the vessel in which the float is to be mounted isnot pressurised. If the vessel is pressurised a pressure-resi-stant ball float has to be fitted. Cylindrical floats may only beused in non-pressurised vessels.

    Temperature If the valve is to be used for temperatures above 80 C or a li-quid other than water, the compatibility of the elastomers mustbe checked. For hydrocarbons like gasoline, petrol etc., for ex-ample, the valves are fitted with FPM elastomers, whilst forhigher temperatures they are fitted with EPDM or, if necessary,with a metallic cone seal.

    Adapting the float Float valves are normally designed for media with the specificgravity of water. By choosing a different float geometry, by fil-ling the float or by altering the operating pressure range, wecan adapt the floats to other media.

    Balance and double seatSingle seat non-balanced float valves are used for low pressu-res. They are relatively insensitive to contamination and dirtdeposits.Single seat balanced valves can be used for larger pressuredrops and feature smaller floats. Double seat valves are specially suitable for large flow rates.

    Overflow preventers A special product are the PTB-approved overflow preventersTypes 36S and 36SF. These are mechanical safety devices forflammable liquids.

    Seat leakage Level controllers and float valves are control valves which arenot required to provide a leak-proof seal (VDI/VDE Guideline2174). For leakproof shutoff, shut-off valves must be used.Normally our valves leave the factory with perfectly leakproofvalve seats. During operation, however, solid particles (e.g.sand, welding nuggets etc.) often cause damage and seat lea-kage. Any low leakage requirement must be expressly speci-fied when ordering. Valve leakage can be considerably redu-ced by special measures such as lapping the valve seat, usingspecial cone seals and increasing the valve closing force bychanging the lever geometry or increasing the size of the float.

    Adjustable filling level In the case of valves fitted with float rod and adjustable float,the level in the vessel can be adjusted by sliding the floatalong the rod.

    Float rod guideFor float rods a guide must be provided in the vessel to pre-vent the float oscillating. Float valves with parallel guide orspecial designs featuring a top-mounted float do not require arod guide.

    Operation Make sure that no pressure surges or water hammer occur inthe system, which could destroy the float. In the case of foa-ming media and the resulting reduction of the specific gravity,a float valve cannot operate reliably. In this case a foam abate-ment circuit should be provided.

    Maintenance Float valves and level controllers should be cleaned and servi-ced at regular intervals. This rule applies especially to valveswhich are rarely operated e.g. valves fitted in sprinkler sy-stems. Thorough cleaning is important in the case of liquids containingsubstances which easily form deposits (such as iron, lime, sus-pended solids etc). Sand and abrasive particles carried along in the liquid can cau-se rapid wear. Please ask for specially adapted valves.

    Level Control Valves NV 12, 12P

    DescriptionFloat valves automatically control liquid levels in sealed or open(non-pressurised) tanks and vessels without requiring externalenergy. The float registers the liquid level and directly controls thevalve via a lever. A change in the liquid level immediately results ina changed flow volume.

    The NV 12 and NV 12 P float valves are standard inlet (feed) val-ves for installation in tanks; they are made of cast iron. The valvecone is fitted with a soft seal.

    The following note applies to float valves fitted with float bars:If the liquid level is below the float bar i.e. if the float points down-wards, a guide for the float bar should be installed.NV 12P is fitted with a parallel guide which prevents float oscillati-on if a float bar guide is not fitted in the tank.

    DescriptionThe NV 16 and NV 26 float valves automatically control liquidlevels in sealed or open (non-pressurised) tanks and vessels wi-thout requiring external energy. The float registers the liquid leveland directly controls the valve via a lever. A change in the liquidlevel immediately results in a changed flow volume.

    NV 16 and NV 26 are pipeline valves for horizontal or vertical flow.The standard soft seal ensures perfect sealing of the valve. Thevalves are fitted with a float bar on which a float featuring an innertube is mounted (cylindrical float SR 8). By changing the positionof the float on the bar the required liquid level is infinitely variable.The following note applies to float valves fitted with float bars:If the liquid level is below the float bar i.e. if the float points down-ward, a guide for the float bar should be installed.

    When enquiring or ordering please quote the suffix letters givenbelow:Z = Inlet. Valve closes when float risesA = Outlet. Valve closes when float dropsw = Horizontal flowo = Upward flowu = Downward flowExample: Float valve NV 16Z/w (inlet valve for horizontal flow).

By changing the position ofthe float on the bar the required liquid level is infinitely variable.The float of discharge valves must be provided with sand filling bythe customer.

    Level Control Valves NV 55, 56

NV 67e is a pipeline valve with tank connectingflange for vertical flow. Both valves are made from deep-drawnstainless steel featuring excellent corrosion resistance. The valvecone is fitted with a soft seal.

    Top and bottom sections of the valve body are connected by aclamp ring and two bolts. Servicing/maintenance is easy and doesnot call for special tooling.

    The valves are fitted with a float bar on which a float featuring aninner tube is mounted (cylindrical float SR 8). By changing the po-sition of the float on the bar the required liquid level is infinitely va-riable.

    NV 98 is a float valve for horizontal installation inside a tank as in-let valve with outlet at the bottom. This valve is made entirely ofstainless steel featuring excellent corrosion resistance. NV 98 R(spigot connection) is fitted with a SR 3 ball float, NV 98 F (flangeconnection) is fitted with a SR 8 cylindrical float that is adjustableon its float bar. NV 98 FP is fitted with a parallel float guide whichprevents oscillation of the float. The valve cone is fitted with a softseal.

    Level Control Valves NV 36SF

    DescriptionThis overfill preventer valve has been tested by Physikalisch-Tech-nische Bundesanstalt, the Technischer berwachungsverein(TV) and the Deutscher Ausschu fr brennbare Flssigkeitenand approved for systems subject to the above regulations. Eachoverfill preventer valve is given its own factory ID number.

    An overfill preventer valve operates under direct float control andrequires no external energy. It is installed in the vertical filler pipein the storage tank. At the end of the filling process the float is lif-ted by the fluid and closes the filler pipe. The valve closes softlyand without pressure surges.

    According to the revised version of the German "Verordnung berbrennbare Flssigkeiten" (VbF) (Directive governing flammable li-quids) dated 5.6.1970 and the associated German "TechnischeRegeln ber brennbare Flssigkeiten" (TRbF) (Technical Rules forflammable liquids), systems or system components used in Ha-zard Areas Zone 0 (TRbF 510), must have design approval in ac-cordance with 11a of VbF.

    DescriptionPneumatic shutoff valves are independent stop valves for water in-stallations fitted with accumulators. These valves prevent air esca-ping from accumulators into the pipe network once a pump has fai-led owing to lack of water, power cut, pipe blockage etc. In thisway dangerous water hammer in the pipe network and loss ofcompressed air is prevented.

    The accumulator must be installed in a pipe spur. As long as theaccumulator is filled with water up to the level of the lower connec-ting spigot, the float of the pneumatic shutoff valve keeps the valveopen in both directions if there is a flow of water. As soon as airpasses from the accumulator into the pneumatic shutoff valve thelatter closes tightly preventing air entering the pipe network. Whenthe pump starts delivering the pneumatic shutoff valve automati-cally opens again and allows water to flow into the accumulator.When the water level is rising the pneumatic shutoff valve willopen only if the pressure inside and downstream of the valve isapproximately zero. The water flow velocity in the valve must notexceed 1.5 m/s (1 m/s for valve size DN 200).

    NV 80 is a pneumatic shutoff valve of angled design, whereas NV82 is a straight valve. The valve body is of welded steel construc-tion; the float is precisely guided in two bushes; the valve cone isfitted with a soft seal.
