Welcome to the 24th AnnualMANHATTAN WINE AUCTION
We are often asked, “What is it that makes our district so strong, despite the fact that
Manhattan Beach receives little state funding for education?” And our answer is always
the same, “It is because of our community.”
Manhattan Beach has magically retained the feeling of a small-town community.
We know our neighbors, walk to school, volunteer, give generously, coach our
Little League, AYSO, and MBYB teams… and we have one of the strongest education
foundations in the nation.
Tonight, we come together to celebrate our amazing community and our committment
to education. The funds we raise will help us to preserve teachers and provide funding
for hands-on STEM programs, writing programs, individualized counseling, librarians,
smaller class sizes, music, electives and zero period, PE, and so much more. With our
collective investment in MBEF and the Endowment, we are working to ensure that our
community will have GREAT SCHOOLS FOREVER.
This Wine Auction would not be possible without the generous contributions of so
many. We thank the committee and the volunteers who have been working tirelessly
for months to make this event a success. We are grateful to the restaurants and wineries
for showcasing their culinary offerings, as well as our table sponsors, underwriters,
auction donors and the Wine Advisory Board.
We also cannot express the depth of our gratitude for the support we have received
from the Bay Club this year. The Wine Auction has been hosted by the Manhattan
Country Club since its inception 24 years ago, and the new ownership at the Bay Club
is commited to carrying on this legacy. We’d also like to thank our Founding Sponsor
Chevron, as well as Belkin and Moss Adams, for their signifi cant investment in our
community, our schools, and our children.
Finally, we thank YOU – our parents, business partners and community members,
for being at the heart of what makes Manhattan Beach so wonderful. The Wine
Auction is our opportunity to come together, have a great time and support our
schools. We thank you for your partnership and investment in this important endeavor.
Sincerely,
Roger Spencer, Chair, Manhattan Wine Auction and MBEF Board Member
Remco Waller, President, MBEF Board
Mike Duckworth, President, MBEF Endowment

It’s going to be hard to top last year, but we’re going to give it our best. Each year,
the Wine Advisory Board reaches ever higher in support of the Manhattan Beach
Education Foundation. The WAB, as we’re known, takes our shared passion for
wine and extends it into the community to try and give our kids the very best
education possible.
We all believe that one of the best parts of being a wine lover is being able to share
it with friends, old and new. Our donors repeatedly reach for cellared treasures, to
bring hundreds of bottles here tonight. The wines donated by WAB members to the
Wine Auction represent their commitment to the cause.
On this night, each year, we come together to raise a toast, literally, to our children,
their teachers and our belief in the importance of public education. The hard work of
MBEF, our donors, and the many volunteers, make MBUSD one of California’s most
successful districts despite being one of the lowest funded in the state.
Please browse the pages that follow and know that your bids benefi t the children in
our community. Give ’til it hurts… and it hurts a lot less after a few glasses!
If you are interested in donating or would like to join the Wine Advisory Board,
please reach out — we would love to have you!
Thank you for being here and giving.

MBEF OVERVIEW AND GRANTS
Your support of the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation provides our students
with programs that inspire learning, enrich teaching, and promote innovation and
academic excellence in the Manhattan Beach Public Schools.
In 2017/18, through MBEF, our community funded 74 educators who bring our children
music, hands-on STEM through MakerSpace, Science Specialists (K-12), STEM
and FabLab at MBMS and science electives at Costa, physical education, reading
fundamentals, libraries, and electives. Our children benefi t from a robust counseling
program and learn in smaller classes. These kinds of opportunities take more than
money – they take partnership and advocacy from all community stakeholders.
Impressive as these numbers are, they only begin to convey the sheer magnitude of
what our students experience as a result of your investment in MBEF. Many of our
District's programs and positions would be eliminated if not for the generous support
of our community. Thank you for your partnership.
LET’S DIVE INTO OUR PROGRAMS

Multiple measures are taken to ensure that our grants meet community priorities.
As a community-driven organization, MBEF strives to ensure our grants are refl ective
of parent and teacher priorities. We welcome feedback and survey our stakeholders
to help determine our strategic direction and funding priorities.
CLASS SIZE REDUCTION$1.8M – 29% of Overall Funding
Few education reforms make as much sense as giving teachers fewer students to
teach. As a result, most of our parent and teacher surveys consistently prioritize the
importance of Class Size Reduction (CSR), and 29% of our overall funding supports
efforts that reduce class size. MBEF grants to support CSR have always been paired
with parallel grants that support professional development in best practices in instruction
and personalization. In 2018/19 we will increase our investment in CSR by 26%, given
that this is consistently the highest priority for our parents and many of our teachers.
CSR in MBUSD takes many forms, and one can argue that because we fund 74 teachers
throughout our district, ALL our grants support CSR. By having additional teachers at
school sites, we are reducing class sizes throughout. CSR grants include:
• Class Size Reduction (K-3 and 6-12)
• Middle School Electives
• Zero Period Classes (6-12)
15
COUNSELING AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELLNESS $1.7M – 27% of Overall Funding
Levels of stress, depression and suicidal ideation at our high school and at
districts throughout the country with similar demographics have increased at an
unprecedented rate. Secondary students report higher levels of stress and isolation.
With these unfortunate trends, our community has signifi cantly increased our
investment in Counseling and Social Emotional Wellness programs. Grants Include:
• School Counselors (6-12)
• College and Career Counselors (9-12)
• Elementary Assistant Principal (K-5)
• MBMS Assistant Principal – Student Life (6-8)
• MBMS Empathy and Inclusion Program (6-8)
• MindUP Professional Development (K-5)
• Social Inclusion Grants (K-12)
READING, WRITING AND LIBRARIES$932,000 – 15% of Overall Funding
There have been signifi cant changes to the curriculum and systems we use to teach
writing and literacy in schools throughout the country. Without question, Reading
and Writing Workshop instruction in MBUSD has set the stage for the instructional
shifts in all other academic areas. Our continued commitment to strong literacy
programs is refl ected in the following grants:
• Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), Literacy and Writing
• Library Specialist (K-12)
• Reading Specialists
STEM: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH$830,000 – 14% of Overall Funding
If our students are to compete in the global economy and pursue expanding
employment opportunities in science-related fi elds, all students must have a solid
K–12 science education. Our District has shifted to align with Next Generation
Science Standards to provide a unique opportunity to further connect our current
work with Makerspace, Fab Lab, and Project-Lead-The-Way to the everyday
classroom learning environment. STEM grants include:
• MakerSpace TOSA and Assistants
• Math Professional Development (K-12)
• Science Specialists
• Technology TOSAs
• Next Generation Science Standards Teacher Leaders (6-12)
• STEM Based Electives
• Science Lab Assistant
16
MUSIC AND THE ARTS$495,000 – 8% of Overall Funding
Music, math, language and science achievement go hand in hand. MBEF funds
48% of music instruction K-12, and as a result, the music program at MBUSD has
experienced phenomenal growth and success. All students in grades 1-5 receive
weekly music instruction, which forms the foundation for our award-winning middle
and high school programs.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION$362,000 – 15% of Overall Funding
MBEF is proud to support credentialed physical education teachers at our elementary
schools. PE teachers provide 100 minutes of high quality physical education and
sportsmanship each week to all students in grades 1-5. Research shows that physical
activity can help children improve their concentration, memory, and classroom
behavior, in addition to the physical health benefi ts.
TEACHER INNOVATION GRANTS$29,500 – 1% of Overall Funding
MBEF will continue the Teachers Driving Innovation Grant Program for teachers
and counselors throughout our District. Each TDI grant ($250-$6,000) provides our
educators with an opportunity to exercise their passion for teaching, develop ideas,
collaborate with colleagues, and connect with the wealth of knowledge, expertise
and talent within MBUSD.
17
IMPRESSIVE RESULTSDespite limited funding from the state, MBUSD outcomes speak for themselves.
MBUSD is among the top K-12 school districts statewide and our students gain
access to a rich and diverse curriculum. We host California Teachers of the Year,
award-winning Model UN and Theater programs, Grammy award-winning
Mira Costa Music program, Distinguished, Gold, Blue and Green Ribbon Schools…
the list goes on.
There is no question that our schools and our students excel because we have an
engaged community that is willing to invest time and money into our children’s
education and future.
TOP 1%
Mira Costa is ranked in the top 1% of U.S. Public High Schools by Newsweek and US News
and World Report.

9ENDOWMENT FUNDASSET GROWTH
Great Schools Today. Great Schools Forever.
Anyone who believes in the power of excellent public education can contribute to the Endowment to ensure that our community will have Great Schools Forever!
HELP THE ENDOWMENT REACH $20 MILLION BY 2020
Please join us as we build our Endowment to $20 million by the year 2020. At this
level, the Endowment will disburse approximately $1M to our schools every year
in perpetuity; regardless of fl uctuations in the economy or shortfalls in Sacramento.
Our goal is to reach a point where the annual return on investment is enough to
make up for the instability of public school funding.
Thirty-one years ago, MBEF established an Endowment to provide a consistent,
sustainable source of funding for Manhattan Beach public schools. Twenty-seven
years later, in 2014, the Endowment crossed the $10M mark and made its fi rst
disbursement of $116,000. In 2018, our Endowment disbursed $760,000 to our schools.
It took 27 years for the Endowment to reach $10M, during which time the Endowment
did not disburse funds. It only took four years to get from $10M to $17.4M, and during
this period disbursed $1.75M to our schools. That’s the power of the Endowment.

Jim knows the South Bay. The South Bay is a very competitive market and because of his
years of experience and connections in the area, we were able to buy a beautiful home.
He was readily available through every step of the home buying process. As busy professionals

that he just helped us to buy another property. ~ SHEENA C.

Gather your friends for dinner, as Chef David LeFevre will prepare a
meal for ten (10) in your home to be paired with the world-class wines
of Morlet Family Vineyards.
Since the opening of local hotspot MB Post with the Simms family in 2011,
Chef David LeFevre has skyrocketed to culinary stardom with sparkling
accolades across the world for his menu of artisanal and playful dishes.
His work as Executive Chef of Fishing with Dynamite and the much beloved Arthur J has only
magnifi ed his prowess as one of the greatest chefs in the nation. Recently, Chef “LeFlavor”
bested six other acclaimed chefs across the country on Food Network’s Iron Chef Gauntlet.
A Master’s Graduate of Enology, Luc Morlet grew up working on his
family’s Champagne domaine in Avenay-Val-D’Or. Prior to moving
to California, his career in France included winemaking positions in
Burgundy and Bordeaux. Beginning with the 2006 vintage, Luc and
Jodie have been handcrafting vins de terroirs and unique cuvées from
the surrounding Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast. Meticulously farmed
vineyards and low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful yet refi ned wines.
By taking old world principles and adapting them to California, the Morlet style results in wines
which are harmonious in their intensity, richness and complexity, while clearly displaying
strong personality, seamless character and graceful aging capability.
WINES PROVIDED:
Champagne Pierre Morlet 2007 ‘Millésime’ Brut Premier Cru, Avenay-Val-D’Or, France

“ Luc Morlet is not only a fabulous winemaking talent, he knows how to bring the French savior
faire of complexity, elegance and precision to the ripe, concentrated, intense fruit of California.”
