INTROUDUCTION• Mangalore is officially known as Mangaluru.It is the
chief port city of India.It is known as kudla in Tulu.It is the administrative headquarters of Dakshina Kannada district in south western Karnataka.
• Mangalore is demographically diverse with several languages, including Tulu,Kannada,English,Urdu and Beary commonly spoken and it is the largest city in Dakshina kannada district.Mangalore is a one of the cosmopolitan non metro cities of India.It is also the largest city in the coastal and malnad regions of Karnataka,besides being aleading commercial,industrial,educational and health care hub on the west coast.Mangalore city urban agglomertion extends from Ullal in south to Mulki in north covering a distance of 50 km.
• Mangalore ranks amongst the cleanest cities in india.The city was ranked indias 13th and karnatakas second most favourable destination for business.
Etymology• Mangalore was named after the Hindu diety Mangaladevi.The
presiding deity of mangaladevi temple.One of the earliest name was Mangalapuram,by the pandyan king Chettian.Who called the city mangalapuram.The city and the coastal region was a part of the pandyan kingdom in 715CE.Mangaluru was first heard in 1345CE.during the vijayanagara rule.The city is named as Mangaluru during vijayanagara rule(Mangala+uru).during the British occupation from 1801.Mangalore(aglicised from Mangaluru)stuck as the official appellation.However according to the historian George M.Moraes,the word “Mangalore” is the portuguese corruption of “Mangaluru”.The name of this town also appears in the map of India.
• Mangalore diverse communities have different names for the city in their languages. In Tulu the primary spoken language the city is called Kudla,meaning “junction". In Konkani Mangalore is referred to as Kodial,while the Beary name for the city is Maikala.
• Mangalore lies on the backwaters of Nethravathi and Gurupur river(Paalguni).These rivers effectively encircle the city.Paalguni flowing around the north and the Nethravathi flowing around the south of the city.
• The coastline of the city is dotted with several beaches,such as Mukka,Panambur,Tannirbavi,Surathkal and someshwara.Coconut trees,palm trees,and Ashoka trees comprises the primary vegetation of the city.
Economy• Mangalore economy is dominated by the
industrial,commercial,agricultural processing and port related activities.Baikampady industrial estate is karnatakas 2nd largest industrial area.The New Mangalore Port Trust is Indias 7th largest port.
• Major information technology(IT)in mangalore are Infosys,Cognizant Technology solutions,Mphassis Bpo,Thomas Reuters.Endurance international group have established in mangalore.
Industries• There are few large scale industries in
mangalore.• Oil and Natural Gas Corporation(ONGC)• Mangalore Chemical and Fertilizers(MCF)• Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemical
Ltd(MRPL) According to an international edition Mangalore
is the fastest growing city in south India.

• Corporation bank,Vijaya bank,Canara bank were the three nationalized bank were established in Mangalore during the first half of the 20th century.
