Drawing Manga Girls: The Basics

n manga, there are as many types of girls as thereare stories, and no two manga girls are exactlyalike. But there are certain techniques that are usedin drawing most girl characters. In this chapter,we’ll learn how to draw the manga head, includingthose fabulous eyes and intense expressions.

Then we’ll take a look at how to draw the body and put itinto some interesting poses. Let’s get started!

Drawing the HeadI know it’s tempting to dive in and start drawing the features of theface right away. After all, drawing those great eyes and the noseand mouth is the quickest way to see the face come to life. But it’salso the fastest way to veer off course.

If we start by drawing the outline of the head and sketching inguidelines to help place the features accurately, when we do addthe features, everything will line up correctly. It only takes an extramoment to do it in this order. Try it. What have you got to lose?

FrontViewThe front view is the simplest

and most straightforward pose tostart with. After you draw the

basic head shape, add twohorizontal eye lines and position

the eyes and ears betweenthem. Use a vertical center line

to keep everything niceand symmetrical.

Once you havethe foundation inplace, you canshade the eyes, fillin the hair andadd lots of details—all the fun stuff!

ProfileIn the side view, the front of the face flattens out considerably,

but the forehead has a long, pleasing curve to it. The eye isdeeply recessed in the head. The lips are usually not apparent in

the side view, and the mouth is drawn as just a thin line.

3⁄4ViewThe 3/4 view is a little tricky, because you have to make adjustments for

perspective, but I’ll give you some tricks so you can do it. The center lineis curved, because it follows the contour of the head, which is round.

The near eye is larger than the far eye, and the area of the face on the farside of the center line has less mass than the near side.
