A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six-year-olds. After explaining the commandment to honor thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, Is there a commandment that teaches

us how to treat our brothers and sisters? Without missing a beat one little boy answered, Thou shalt not kill.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rally Day is around the corner, and as I write this the stores are busy helping last minute shoppers stock up for the beginning of school. We are about to start the fall rush of activities, school assignments, and church education. If you sit still and listen, you can almost hear the metaphorical intake of breath; the quiet before the storm. After my four years here at First Lutheran, I have discovered that every fall is different and that every year brings new challenges, new joys, and new insights. You try to be prepared for everything; then comes an answer, situation, or conflict you werent expecting. Fall is that time in the life of the church were everything comes back to life. Our childhood education community is growing and that growth pushes at the seams of what has worked in education before. When it comes to children and youth, you can never quite tell what will happen next. With the vibrant life of community comes the unexpected. Those unexpected answers, situations, or conflicts are where we most vividly experience Christ. In a funny answer given to the church school teacher, in the quiet hand that holds a stranger in grief, in a most needed but not expected gift, Christ is there. Surrounding us in light in the midst of darkness, giving hope in the midst of despair, meeting us where we are at; Christ shows up in unexpected places and people. As we head into the business of fall, when the unexpected happens, sit still, listen, and watch. We just might come face to face with Christ Jesus our Lord. May God bless you in the unexpected, Pastor Chris

________________________________________________ First Lutheran, do you think we can break our

record from last year? Our goal was 4 deliveries last year & WE DID IT!

Many children in Mandan begin school each year without supplies. During the next few months, please check the school supply aisles and consider making a purchase for those less fortunate right here in Mandan. Supplies needed are 24 box crayons, pencils, erasers, glue, glue sticks, rulers, scissors, back packs, folders and regular or college ruled tablets. Any supplies received will be equally distributed among the 6 Mandan elementary schools. The schools last year were very appreciative of all the supplies that were given to them! There will be a SPECIAL BOX for these items in the narthex; please drop your donations in there. Thank you for your kindness!

    Sanctuary Choir Starting Soon!!

Have you sung in a choir or wanted to sing in a choir? Do people tell you, you

should sing in a choir because you have a good voice? Now is your chance!!! Come

try out the First Lutheran Sanctuary Choir. The choir is just one of the great

ways to get involved in our church! This group is not here for a select few, it is for

anyone who is interested - and its a wonderful way for you to share your talents

with our church. I hear lots of great voices in the congregation and our choir is in

need, so please consider joining us. Our regular rehearsal is at 9:45 A.M. in the

Chapel on Sundays and we are a come when you can choir. The Sanctuary

Choir is a relaxed, fun group of people, ready to welcome new members from the

beginner to an experienced choral singer. Our first practice is on Sunday,

September 10th at 9:45 A.M., if you cannot make that, check us out any Sunday

    after that.

Singing is Praying Twice, so come join the fun!!!

First Lutherans Lunch at First (LAF) program feeds about 400 of our Mandan High School students each week during the school year! Its a ministry that has grown immensely over the past few years and promises to grow into the future. Its great to witness God working through our volunteers as they serve and our young people as they are served all disciples of Jesus Christ!

As the numbers of young people served has grown, naturally so has the budget for LAF. It costs about $400 a week to feed these young people a cost of about $.95 cents per meal per student a real bargain!!

So, we are asking individuals, families, businesses and corporations for some financial assistance as we

move into the Fall. If you, your family or business would like to sponsor a LAF meal it would go a long

way toward funding LAF. Maybe a group of families would like to sponsor a meal and help serve it!!

Whatever the case let us know and thank you in advance for your contribution toward bringing Jesus

command, Feed my sheep to our high school students.
