Agricultural club celebrates 85 years

The Manawatu Oroua Boys and Girls Agricultural Club celebrates its 85th anniversary this year.

Originally founded by local farmers, the club worked closely with schools in conjunction with the Wanganui Education Board. When the Ministry of Education was established, the Manawatu/Oroua division began to run independently.

Ernest Lange from the Wanganui Education Board is credited with setting up the garden competition which included a mangold growing contest. Mr Lange travelled to garden plots to pull up and weigh the mangolds. A seed company supplied the seeds to plant and there were strict rules covering the day seeds could be planted.

Club secretary Raewyn Hills said town schools also got on board and provided space for students to grow their vegetables if they didn’t have room at home.

Initially the competitions were limited to gardens but calves and lambs were soon integrated.

The earlier regional championship competitions were held on the grounds of the schools involved on a rotational basis. As the event grew larger it moved to Timona Park in Feilding, then onto the Feilding racecourse. However as motor racing began at the adjoining Manfeild

race track, it became difficult to continue holding the event on the grounds and the competition headed to the Te Kawau Memorial Grounds in Rongotea.

Club secretary Raewyn Hills said the main objective of the competition was to encourage children to not only rear but show their animals with justifiable pride.

“Schools made these days part of their charter with not just animals, but gardens, floral and craftwork as part of the day’s festivities.”

The Manawatu Oroua Boys and Girls Agricultural Club aims to promote and encourage students to be actively involved in animal husbandry and horticultural plots. This, in turn, develops a sense of achievement, self-esteem and responsibility on a day-to-day basis and through to the end of the rearing or growing process.

Pupils from 22 schools take part in the agricultural club competition.

This year’s regional championship day will be held on November 14 at the Te Kawau Memorial Grounds with judging starting at 10am.

A light lunch, held to celebrate the club’s 85 years, will be available to all attendees.

The club has encouraged children’s involvement with gardens and animal husbandry for 85 years

Entries for the 2016 Golden Lamb Awards, also known as The Glammies, are now open.

The competition, which has been running for the past nine years, stemmed from Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s beef competition, Steak of Origin. The Glammies is the equivalent competition for the lamb industry and aims to find the tastiest and most tender lamb in New Zealand.

The contest gives farmers the opportunity to enter their lamb into one of the most highly regarded competitions the industry has to offer.

Each entrant in the competition will have a lamb carcass randomly chosen from their selection of 10-30, where two legs will be removed and analysed. One leg will be assessed for tenderness, yield, succulence and colour by Carne Technologies in Cambridge.

The other leg, if successful, will be used for tasting at the final. The scientific testing determines which top four entries from each of the five categories will make it through to the final stage of the competition. The

final stage, a taste test by top chefs and celebrities, will be held at the Upper Clutha A&P Show in Wanaka on March 11.

The five categories include Best of Breed — Traditional, Best of Breed — Crossbreed, Best of Breed — Terminal Cross, Best of Breed — Open, and Retailer.

Beef + Lamb chief executive Dr Scott Champion said the Glammies gives New Zealand farmers the opportunity to showcase produce.

“This is a competition that highlights the pasture to plate story.

“It is held in high regard by the industry and shows a farmer’s commitment to producing the best New Zealand lamb,” he said.

The sheep stud, located in the Rangiwahia area, sits under the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges.

Andrew Clifton, his wife Naomi, and Andrew’s parents currently run the farm.

Five generations of Andrew’s family have farmed the property since the purchase of the first block in 1912.

Andrew said the 900ha property (600ha effective) was originally all in 200 acre blocks and milked by various families.

“You can still see parts of the old milking sheds and Totara blocks that the separator was bolted to. The names of the current paddocks represent the families that owned them,” he said.

Close to 10 percent of the farm is flat land, with 75 percent rolling and the remaining 15 percent steep country. The land ranges in altitude from 700 to 1,000 metres above sea level.

Andrew’s grandfather Eric initially ran Dorset Horn sheep. In 1957 he and another farmer, R V Pratt, travelled to

Tasmania and purchased six Poll Dorset ewes and two rams. Two years later, Te Kawa Poll Dorsets Stud was registered with the New Zealand Sheep breeders’ Association as Flock Number Two.

Currently there are 100 Poll Dorset stud ewes, 1,600 commercial ewes which are predominantly Poll Dorset/Perendale cross, 400 hoggets, 130 Angus cows, 30 R2 and 30 R1 heifers, 210 Red hinds, replacement hinds, and 50 Red stags for velveting at Te Kawa. Andrew said the Poll Dorset’s milking ability and high growth rate traits are utilised in the farm’s commercial flock.

“Fifty percent of the ewe hoggets are selected for the stud on SIL values and structural soundness. The ewes are culled on constitution and performance.”

The stud has also used AI proven rams. “This has allowed our rams to be in the top percentage of terminal sires in New Zealand - SIL-ace and Poll Dorset across flock analysis.” Only the top percentage of ram lambs are taken

through for sale. Due to the climate and altitude, Te Kawa Poll Dorsets has had to perform under testing conditions. For that reason, the progeny of the rams should be able to adapt to any environment.

The Clifton family aim to produce high growth weight lambs with a meaty carcass. Sires are selected from within their flock and from Mega Meat members. Mega Meat, originally formed by 12 Poll Dorset breeders, is a new ram breeding group located in the lower North Island. Lambing dates are split due to the topography of the farm and climate. In September, lambing begins with the Poll Dorsets and ewes with

replacement lambs. The two-tooth and four-tooth ewes are put to a Poll Dorset ram and lamb in early October.

“Stud rams are sold mid December onwards and the first draft of lambs are at the beginning of January,”

“We aim to have all surplus lambs off the farm by May,” said Andrew.

Angus cows at Te Kawa complement the sheep by cleaning up pastures for lambing and to help maintain summer growth. Calving begins late October, with steer calves and surplus heifers sold in late April. Andrew said the Red deer, which fawn in November, also suit well with the grass growth curve. Weaner stags are sold in June. As

the weather plays a major role in the running of the farm, Andrew believes it is important to “roll with the punches and celebrate any successful achievement.”“We have a short summer season with grass slowing in May and picking up again in October,” said Andrew.

The farm receives between four to five snowfalls a year on average and supplementary feed is provided to stock when needed in the colder weather.

“We normally make about 150-200 bales per season, however due to this year’s drought we bought baleage in.”

Four hectares of swedes and two hectares in rape crops are well utilised.

“Unfortunately the past summer drought has affected the yield so the swedes were grazed off with lambs and moata drilled in,” said Andrew.

“This year’s feed supply is very tight, almost non-existent.”

Te Kawa Poll Dorsets has reached the finals of the Genetic Trait Awards for SIL-ACE Terminal Sire for Lamb Growth section in Beef + Lamb New Zealand Sheep Industry Awards for two years running. “It is pleasing to be acknowledged in this way particularly because of the stud’s history,” said Andrew.

“It is important for us to continue on with the work that has been done already and hopefully add to that legacy. “

Although farming can be challenging at times, Andrew and Naomi agree that the ability to spend days outside with their children and grandparents is particularly special.

“We both have that connection to the land and wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Cleo grew up on a Coromandel peninsula lifestyle block where her family raised a variety of

animals. After finishing secondary school, she headed to the University of Waikato where she completed a Masters in Science looking at stallion fertility.

“This led me to work at Equibreed NZ Ltd as an equine technician where I quickly developed my farming skills and became the farm manager there,” said Cleo.

Based in the Waikato region, Equibreed NZ Ltd specialise in veterinary equine reproductive services. Cleo’s interest in reproduction also prompted her to train to become an AB technician alongside her farm management role.

“This was my first introduction to the dairy industry,” she said.

“Talking to the farm managers was really interesting and it made me want to know more.”

Two years ago, Cleo moved to the Manawatu when her partner was posted to Linton Military Camp.

During this transition she found it difficult to leave her role with Equibreed and had concerns about finding a similar position.

“However, I was lucky enough to find the Landcorp farm tech role and convince the team at my interview that although I had only had a taste of the dairy industry, my skill-set would suit perfectly to the role. Thankfully they gave me a shot,” she said.

cattle and deer. Cleo’s role is centred amongst the company’s dairy farms in Moutoa and involves a wide range of duties working with staff and livestock.

“My job is fantastic because I have the best of both worlds.

“I get to work outside with animals and be on farm but I also get to challenge myself mentally with the office side of my role,” she said.

“I am surrounded by extremely intelligent people who know so much about the dairy industry and they are always keen to share their knowledge.”

Cleo said the Landcorp team at Moutoa, situated in the lower Manawatu region, are amazing and always prepared to help each other out.

“Currently I primarily reside on the complex which is nine farms and 1400 hectares.”

Occasionally Cleo is required to spend time in Landcorp’s head office in Wellington, or to attend training days in different parts of New Zealand.

With a slight change in her duties this season, Cleo will be travelling to other Landcorp dairy complexes to assist in the rollout of one of the company’s new initiatives.

Cleo said every aspect of her job is enjoyable. Continuing with her tertiary studies is one of Cleo’s priorities and she is currently working towards a post-graduate diploma in Maori Resources and Environment Management through Massey University. In addition to study, competitive show-jumping and

keeping fit takes up Cleo’s spare time.“Sometimes balancing work, personal life and study is hard,” said Cleo.

However, she finds learning so much each day and being relatively new to the industry keeps it all fun. Cleo intends

to continue learning more about the dairy industry. Although her long-term goals are not set in stone at this stage, she would like to combine her passion for environmental sustainability and farming.

A study of 50 year old United States Department of Agriculture data has disclosed that minerals in 43 different vegetables and fruits, compared to those that were eaten in 1999, found signi� cant decreases in protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, ribo� avin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C.

According to Scienti� c American, subsequent studies have found a Kushi Institute analysis from 1975 to 1997 showing that average calcium levels in 12 varieties of fresh vegetables dropped 27%; vitamin A 21%, iron 37% and vitamin C 30%. A British study covering 1930 to 1980 found that the average calcium content of 20 vegetables had declined by 19%, with 14% less potassium and 22% less iron. Yet another study concluded that “one would have to eat eight oranges today, to derive the same amount of vitamin A as our grandparents would have derived from just one orange”.

In 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit it was stated that there is deep concern over continuing major declines in the mineral values in farm and top soils throughout the world, showing mineral levels in the world’s soil falling by 85% in the USA, 76% in Asia and 72% in Europe. Such

What’s causing lameness?Last month I wrote an article on white line disease, the most common hoof problem that we have with dairy cows, and I mentioned that the commonly believed theories are difficult to support and that there has to be an underlying issue.

If stones and pushing were as detrimental to the hooves as what we are led to believe then we wouldn’t be able to farm cows, and deer and mountain goats would have been extinct a long time ago. The underlying issue that we face, with probably 80-90% of our lame cows, is laminitis.

Laminitis is by far the biggest cause of lameness and in dairy cows most of the damage by laminitis is seen on the walking surface of the claws, the sole and white line region.

The next biggest cause of lameness is nowhere near as great as laminitis. Not yet at least, even though we may potentially get one if we don’t keep Digital Dermatitis under control. DD is potentially going to be a major problem for you if you don’t manage it well and that should start now.

I will address that more in a future article, but let’s focus on this white line issue first. Laminitis is a multi-factorial disease that basically results in unhealthy live tissue in the hoof — the predominant causes being diet and stress. If the live tissue becomes unhealthy in both claws then the claw that is bearing the greatest share of the weight will struggle more than the claw that doesn’t bear as much weight. For example, it’s the same as if two people walk along the road — one carrying a 30kg backpack and the other carrying a 10kg backpack. After a 40km walk the person with the 30kg backpack will have to work harder than the one with the 10kg backpack.

These two people may be able to handle their individual load for that distance if they have trained for it but when they both come down with the ‘flu’ the difference in weight will be more evident. This explains why we see more

lameness in the outer claw than what we see in the inner claw. You will find that the outer claw is usually bigger than the inner claw, and therefore bearing more weight than the inner claw.

Even if the claws were the same height and size the outer claw would still get more fluctuation in weight than the inner claw due to the swaying of the body from left to right to left to right as the cow is walking.

So, if the outer claw is becoming bigger than the inner claw it will become more vulnerable as it will be overloaded with every step the cow takes, and even when the cows are standing still in the yard.

So, what can you do to minimise lameness? Well, the answer to that question is to minimise the effect of the factors contributing to laminitis — namely stress and diet. If a cow has no laminitis I am convinced you can push that cow as hard as you like on a really rough track and it won’t cause any issue for her.

Unfortunately, there are very few cows in New Zealand that do not have laminitis to some degree. Treatment for laminitis is primarily through hoof trimming. When you get a professional

hoof trimmer in to do some preventative trimming for you, he or she will not be able to stop the laminitis but the trimmer should be able to trim the claw in such a way that the effects of laminitis are kept to a minimum, and therefore the productivity of the cow is kept high.

The farm environment can be a hazardous one, health and safety considerations extend to all personnel involved in agricultural and pastoral activities this obviously includes contractors and subcontractors who play a major role on farms.

Farm owners’ and managers’ responsibilities extend to the health and safety of everyone who works on the farm — full time, part time, casual employees, contractors and their employees, subcontractors and consultants. Worksafe NZ has laid down guidelines for both principal and contractor. ‘Contractors and subcontractors have the same duty of

care to their employees as any other employer. Contractors need to know what the principal’s (farmers) health and safety procedures are so they can assess their employees’ safety on site.Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that workers face and how the site will be made safe.

Rural Contractors NZ president, Steve Levet says such things as forecast drought and the lower forecast milk price could see some farmers under huge pressure.

“However, there are things on farm that have to be done — no matter what — such as supplementary feed and crop harvesting.

“Contractors are professionals and are especially set up to help out when these jobs need to be done on the farm.”

Rural Contractors is the only national association and the leading advocate for rural contractors in the country and while accrediting members to provide assurance to farmers of the qualifications and reliability of its members, the organisation also

monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of its membership. It also maintains close relations with a wide number of organisations, government departments and other national bodies.

This assures best practice, when the contractor, staff and machinery moves onto the farm. Another reason for farmers to source RCNZ members is the fact that the association supports and promotes training and education in the industry.

It’s a job which many kids profess to desire — the ability to drive those huge machines which shape the soil and make the foundations for our homes and industries. But what does it take to get the ‘right stuff’ in this day and age to become a heavy machinery operator?

It’s a growing industry which requires a high level of skill. In the year to march 2015 the number of trained heavy excavator and Tracks, Wheels and Rollers certed drivers rose to an unprecedented 7800 nationwide, with no sign of slackening growth.

Of course the massive Christchurch rebuild is part of this figure, but roading and the needs of rural New Zealand make up a huge part of this figure as well.

That’s no surprise — increasingly, the farming sector requires big projects to meet the needs of more intensive agriculture. That means bigger feed pads, dairy sheds, barns, storage facilities, roads and races. And the need for fresh water year round in a changing climate has seen a rise in the construction of dams, while regulations surrounding dairy effluent have required the expansion of ponds and waste

systems. Young recruits coming up in the trade must initially earn their heavy vehicle licences, grades 2 to 5 depending on the vehicles they wish to command. An additional Tracks, Wheels and Rollers certification is also required. And that’s before facing the array of hydraulic controls which allow a seasoned excavator operator to move his machine’s massive boom with surgical precision.

To then go on to achieve the required Certificate in Civil Plant Operation level 3 (or the alternative cert to level 3 specialising in bulk earthmoving), those fresh out of high school must have a minimum NCEA english and maths level 2. Canterbury and Auckland are the leading areas demanding more skilled operators, so this is a smart career path for those who have sharp eyes, deft hands and mental stamina. The learning never stops in this trade,

In the earliest days of farming and forestry in New Zealand the hard work was undertaken by manpower alone. A small steadholding was as much as many pioneers could manage.

The forests rung to the sound of axes and bullocks pulled the logs to rivers where they would be floated to the mills. Hilly country was of little use as it could not be treated with fertiliser. And the average dairy herd was diminutive by modern standards. Even ploughing a field was a huge task, undertaken with the help of powerful Clydesdale horses.

All this began to change with the advent of technology, and with this change came the specialised professions which we now recognise as our rural contractors. The first such change came in the 1860s, when the traction engine first reached our shores,

bringing with it the ability to plough with a ‘shuttle’ system, to mill logs in situ using its belt drive, or even to process wool. The engineers who ran these hissing behemoths were the first dedicated contractors on the scene.

The first hay baler was invented in 1874 by Cyrus McCormick, leading to an evolution in such machines which culminates in today’s round balers — some towed behind modern tractors carrying McCormick’s name!

Taking to the air to spread fertiliser and seeds was pioneered right here in New Zealand, initially by balloon, but after World War Two a bunch of daring aviators took to the skies in planes such

as the Tiger Moth to break in hilly land. Their successors now ensure that farms can thrive even in adverse conditions.

It was the advent of hydraulics, and the powerful diesels which drive them, which really changed the game. American engineer Harry Vickers is said to be the ‘father’ of hydraulic technology, helping develop the systems

which now drive diggers and excavators, logging machines and many agricultural implements. Without these innovations — and the men who pioneered them — farming in New Zealand may still be on a small and relatively unproductive scale. With them — and with the contractors who put technology to work in the primary sector — we can look forward to a profitable future.

“We’re confident that New Zealand’s negotiators have secured the best possible deal for Kiwi sheep and beef farmers,” says BLNZ Chairman James Parsons.

“The TPP will have a significant impact on the competitiveness of our exports in TPP markets.” The sheep and beef sector’s exports to TPP countries were worth more than $2.4 billion in 2014, nearly one-third of the sector’s total exports. That trade incurred about $94 million in tariffs last year.

“New Zealand doesn’t currently have Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with Japan, the US, Canada, Mexico or Peru.

“This deal is particularly important for us in relation to those markets, some of which currently charge very high tariffs on our exports but are highly valuable

to the sector,” said MIA Chairman Bill Falconer.

“The TPP will also open the door to addressing some complex and costly non-tariff barriers.”

New Zealand’s FTAs saved $161 million in tariffs on the sheep and beef sector’s global exports last year, and the conclusion of the TPP means that number will continue to grow. BLNZ and MIA work together to improve access for sheep and beef products to overseas markets, including by providing in-depth analysis to support the government’s trade negotiation efforts. The full details of the TPP, including the specific tariff cuts that will take place in the various markets, are expected to be released by the government soon.

In 1953, New Zealand, personified by the legendary Sir Edmund Hillary, conquered Everest. Now, in 2015, in a strange role reversal, the new Ford Everest looks poised to conquer New Zealand.

We’ve been awaiting the arrival of this big seven-seater since its unveiling in Australia last year, and were tantalised by the sight of the impressive beast in the flesh, so to speak, at this year’s National Fieldays. But getting behind the wheel of Ford’s latest offering is something else again. In size, the Everest is a replacement for the Explorer, and in theory it faces off against the

formidable Land Cruiser Prado in the market. But in reality this machine is styled like a Ranger, equipped like a luxurious Range Rover, handles off-road duties like a mountain goat and packs literally more computing power in its dash than the original space shuttle.

Based on the wildly successful Ranger platform, the Everest shares the same beefy torque and power. In an age of sanitised appliance-like SUVs, it’s good to hear the powerful rumble of the Everest’s motor at idle. Even better to know that it promises to travel over 800 kilometres on a single tank. Step up on the running board and you’ll find a dash and binnacle easily the equal of anything out of Europe — a result of Ford’s world car programme bearing fruit. Sync 2 impresses as usual, offering what may be the best sat nav and entertainment hub available today on any vehicle.

Out on the road, the Everest manages its seven-seater size with taut grace, never wallowing or feeling underpowered. The Ranger’s strength over other utes was its sedan-like manner on the tarmac, and the Everest

follows up on this design philosophy. Off road, the Ford knocks many of its so called competitors into a cocked hat straight away, as it can actually handle tough terrain. Faux-wheel-drives and crossovers be warned — while some very expensive machines look the business but get stuck in a shallow puddle, the Everest packs sand, mud, snow, uneven terrain and slippery grass modes, combining them on the fly with hill descent, locking diffs and a true low ratio mode. It feels as if nothing short

of the original Everest — the big, snowy one — will stop the new Everest in its tracks. Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphation build-up on internal lead plates.

According to Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Revitalizer and Conditioner, sulphation is very easy to treat and prevent premature battery failure with their simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Program.

“We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to ten years battery life using our battery conditioning program. These days we meet people using our RECHARGE Battery Conditioning Program with 12 and 14-year-old batteries often still going,” says Gerard.

“Last year we had three farmers with 17-year-old batteries still going strong. The last one was a Canterbury farmer at the Christchurch A and P show — he was very pleased with the results.

“After 17 years on the market in New Zealand and 11 years in Australia I would not be surprised if we bettered that � gure given time.”

A RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid electrolyte holding electrons.

“We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” says Gerard.

“Once treated, a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition and prevention is the key. Treat them early, repeat every two

to three years and keep them charged. Yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with silicone, sika-� ex or a plastic bung.

Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists
