Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed bin Salman

bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, named crown prince yesterday, holds unusual power for a man of just 31, so much so that diplomats nickname him “Mr Everything”.

The son of King Salman has risen to become Saudi Arabia’s most influential and prominent figure since being named second-in-line to the throne in early 2015. He symbolises the hopes of a youthful local population, more than half of which is under 25.

Prince Mohammed is the main proponent of a wide-ranging plan, dubbed Vision 2030, to bring social and economic change to the oil-dependent economy.

He also holds the post of defence minister more than two years into a Saudi-led military intervention in neighbouring Yemen.

“He’s clearly very bright, very intelligent, on top of all his briefs”, one Western diplomat said.

Among his most prominent positions is chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, which coordinates economic policy. Mohammed also chairs a body overseeing state oil giant Saudi Aramco.

As defence minister, the prince supervises the Saudi-led coalition’s operations in support of the Yemeni government against Shiite rebels who control the capital Sanaa.

‘One of the citizens’In a profile last year, Bloomberg Businessweek said the prince works 16-hour days and draws inspiration from the writings of wartime British prime minister Winston Churchill and Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War”.

It was one of many interviews in which the prince has spoken at length about his economic plans for the kingdom, where officials are traditionally tight-lipped.

In a rare press briefing  in April last year, he seemed relaxed as he took questions from the domestic and international press for about 50 minutes.

A law graduate from Riyadh’s King Saud University, the prince is

the father of two boys and two girls and -- unlike other members of the royal family -- has married only once.

He told Bloomberg that although Islam allows for multiple marriages, modern life does not leave the time.

Mohammed spent years working for his father when he was governor of Riyadh and when he was crown prince from 2013 to 2015.

At his 2016 press conference, Mohamed was self-effacing about a comment that his name would be “remembered in the future”.

“I am one of the Saudi citizens, and the Saudi citizens too will be remembered in the future,” he said. (AFP)

Mohammed bin SalmanAl Saud: new heir to throne

Prince Mohammed is the chief architect of an

ambitious plan to transform the Saudi economy by 2030 to reduce its dependence on oil and develop the private sector.

Under the “Vision 2030” plan, unveiled in April 2016, Saudi Arabia will sell nearly five percent of state-owned Aramco -- the world’s largest oil company reportedly worth between $2 trillion and $2.5 trillion.

The sale would mark the first move towards Aramco’s privatisation.

The plan aims to create a sovereign wealth fund worth $2 trillion, which would make

it the largest state-owned investment fund in the world. It targets an increase in non-oil government revenue sixfold from $43.5 billion to $267 billion.

It aims to raise non-oil exports and boost the contribution of the private sector to gross domestic product (GDP) from 40 percent to 65 percent.

The economic plans are also aimed at bringing about tentative societal change by expanding local industry and slashing unemployment.

Women are expected to constitute 30 percent of the workforce by 2030, up from 22 percent now.

“These companies see the Gulf region as an important strategic location and the high-level meetings they are able to hold via our civil and military delegations program make the show invaluable to them.”

The minister on Tuesday hosted a business briefing at the Kallman USA Partnership Pavilion.

BIAS has gained a reputation as an important aerospace business event in the Middle East, and has drawn notable participants.

In 2016 the HAL Tejas fighter from India made its international debut in Bahrain.

For next year’s show the organizers are planning new features such as a presentation theatre for product demonstrations.

The Supreme Appeals Court yesterday rejected

the appeals of three persons convicted of injuring a police officer but reduced their jail terms from seven years behind bars to five years.

The trio is said to have been among 40 saboteurs who rioted in the village of Bild Al Qadeem.

They attacked police officers who arrived at the scene with firebombs and pelted them with iron rods, but were eventually dispersed.

The roads were blocked with stones and woods, and the victim began with his colleagues removing them to open it. However, one of the culprits pelted an iron rod at him.

The police officer was

rushed to a hospital, where examinations revealed that his colon was cut because the rod penetrated his tummy.

Doctors operated him, while detectives launched investigations into the case and arrested 12 people who included the three appellants.

All the 12 accused were earlier convicted in connection with this case and received seven years jail each.

In accordance with the Government’s policy

in the 4th National Telecommunications Plan (NTP4) which was issued in May 2016, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), with support from the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, is working diligently towards carrying out measures to secure Bahrain’s online environment and improve consumer awareness of cyber threats and how to deal with them.

In a continuation of these efforts, the TRA recently published the outcomes of the second National Internet Safety Review (NISR) report.

This report, which is the only study of its kind in the region, aims to measure the exposure of youth to online

risks and the overall awareness of these risks amongst multiple stakeholder groups including children, adults and teachers.

The study has found that since the last review, conducted in 2010, there has been a significant increase in the usage of online services and mobile devices.

However, the report also showed that there is a growing awareness of the major risk areas in online usage, with a marked decrease in sharing personal data online and an increased confidence in online safety amongst those who participated in the study.

“The TRA’s ongoing efforts in raising consumer awareness regarding cyber safety have shown a positive impact as we can see a significant improvement in consumer awareness in the results of the second safety review,” said

Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed.

“There is still much more to be done in this regard, which will require strong collaboration between government, private entities and individuals in order to ensure that all consumers in the Kingdom are able to utilize all online services with confidence and safety.”

The key findings of the NISR report are divided amongst four stakeholder groups; children aged 7-11, children aged 12-18, adults and teachers.

The NISR report also includes a number of recommendations to assist stakeholders and decision makers in raising awareness about the ongoing challenges in cyber safety and how to address them.

Yoga has connected the world with India, Prime

Minister Narendra Modi said yesterday, as he rolled out his mat along with millions of others across the globe to celebrate the ancient practice.

Enthusiasts across India rose at the crack of dawn, many braving monsoon showers, to mark the third International Yoga Day.

Celebrity yoga guru Baba Ramdev claimed to have set a new world record for

the largest yoga session by gathering more than 300,000 practitioners at an open-air ground in the western city of Ahmedabad.

Officials from Guinness World Records were checking data from the event, but if confirmed, the numbers easily beat the previous record set two years ago in New Delhi with 36,000 participants.

India’s prime minister, a teetotal vegetarian who practises yoga daily, led

some 50,000 people in an early-morning session in Lucknow, the capital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

On Wednesday the UN headquarters in New York lit up with images of poses, among the events being held across more than 100 countries to mark the third International Yoga Day.

From China’s Great Wall to the London Eye, yoga fans performed ‘asanas’, or poses, at major landmarks.

Yoga is not just for relaxation or recreation,

it can also help cure certain medical conditions which modern medicines fail to treat, a yoga expert says.

Neelanjana Bharadwaj believes that Yoga is not only calming but it will also improve one’s overall health. According to her, in some cases Yoga is also known to cure certain ‘incurable’ medical conditions.

She was cured from a medical condition herself, with the help of yoga. Doctors told her that her autoimmune condition could not be cured which led her to turn to yoga and homeopathy to treat herself.

“I had an autoimmune condition 17 years back, the doctors had written me off, said that it could not be cured and gave me painkillers instead. They said that I would have to live with it for the rest of my life. Soon I stumbled upon yoga and started practicing in regularly. Alongside it, I also took homeopathy medication and these two worked in synergy to cure me,” she said.

According to her, Yoga played a huge role in curing her. She said yoga is good especially in treating auto-

immune conditions. “Yoga is an ancient science and a way of life. It is based on a deep connection to breath. It has a lot of physical benefits as well as mental benefits. It works especially well in curing autoimmune diseases,” she said.

“I love teaching yoga, it’s something that I am very passionate about. So now I have two careers, one as a freelance architect and the other as a yoga instructor. I work with fitness centres and other organizations to deliver yoga classes,” she added.

Kabul

An American and an Australian have appeared

in a second Taliban hostage video, nearly a year after they were kidnapped in Kabul.

Gunmen wearing police uniforms abducted American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weekes, both professors at the American University of Afghanistan, in August last year, seizing them from their vehicle.

The 10-minute, 18-second video was posted on Telegram yesterday but dated June 16, according to SITE Intelligence Group, offering fresh proof that they were still alive.

The professors appear thinner than in their first hostage video that surfaced in January.

US Special Operations forces conducted a failed secret raid in August to rescue them. President Barack Obama authorised the raid in an unspecified area of Afghanistan but the hostages were not there, the Pentagon said.

The elite American University of Afghanistan, which opened in 2006 and has attracted a number of faculty members from Western countries, has repeatedly

called on the Taliban to release the professors.

Earlier this month the insurgents threatened to kill foreign hostages they hold if Kabul executes their prisoners.

Government sources said recently President Ashraf Ghani was expected to approve the execution of 11 Taliban and Haqqani Network prisoners, in apparent retaliation for a catastrophic truck bombing in Kabul on May 31.

Afghanistan’s intelligence agency has blamed the

Taliban-allied Haqqani Network for the attack in the city’s diplomatic quarte, which left more than 150 people dead and hundreds wounded.

The Taliban also hold Canadian Joshua Boyle and his American wife Caitlan Coleman, who have had two sons in captivity after being kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2012 during a backpacking trip.

The abductions highlight the growing dangers faced by local civilians and foreigners in Afghanistan. (AFP)

Watchdog decries pricey Afghan army uniformsWashington

The Pentagon wasted millions of dollars

buying the Afghanistan army a woodland camouflage uniform that was apparently chosen on a whim and may have made soldiers easier to spot, a US government watchdog said yesterday.

The office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) said the Pentagon may have spent as much as $28 million more than necessary when it decided in 2007 to purchase the dark-green camouflage uniforms.

Pentagon officials at the time “ran across” the website of a private company that owned a proprietary camo design and showed these to Afghanistan’s then defence minister, Abdul Rahim Wardak.

He “liked what he saw. He liked the woodland, urban and temperate patterns,” the SIGAR report states, citing Pentagon officials.

After further consultation with the Afghan defence ministry, officials decided to adopt the camouflage pattern containing a “forest” colour scheme for army uniforms, “despite the fact that forests

cover only 2.1 percent of Afghanistan’s total land area.” That decision resulted in the purchase of 1,364,602 such uniforms and 88,010 extra pairs of pants between November 2008 and January this year.

The highly critical SIGAR report also says officials ordered the uniforms without conducting any formal testing or evaluation.

“As a result, neither (the US Department of Defence) nor the Afghan government knows whether the ANA (Afghan National Army) uniform is appropriate to the Afghan environment, or whether it actually hinders their operations by providing a more clearly visible target

to the enemy,” SIGAR said.Special Inspector John

Sopko, who periodically releases reports like this documenting US government waste and missed opportunities in Afghanistan, told USA Today the saga was “stupid.”

“My concern is what if the minister of defence liked purple, or liked pink?” Sopko told the newspaper.

“Are we going to buy pink uniforms for soldiers and not ask questions? That’s insane. This is just simply stupid on its face. We wasted $28 million of taxpayers’ money in the name of fashion, because the defence minister thought that that pattern was pretty.”

Rafah

Egypt began yesterday to deliver a million litres

of fuel to Gaza, temporarily easing a crisis that has left the Palestinian enclave’s two million residents with only a few hours of electricity per day.

The deliveries come two days after Israel began reducing the electricity it supplies to Gaza, following Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s decision to stop paying for it amid a

dispute with Hamas. The fuel will go to Gaza’s

sole power plant, which has been shut since April due to shortages, and will provide enough power for a few days, Samir Moutair, director general of the Gaza electricity company, said.

The gas-rich Gulf state of Qatar has previously intervened to cover fuel costs.

Instead Egypt, led by President Abdel Fattah

al-Sisi, has intervened, despite traditionally frosty relations with Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007.

In total 22 trucks carrying a million litres (220,000 gallons) of fuel for the power plant were entering Wednesday, Wael Abu Omar, the Rafah crossing spokesman, told AFP.

The energy authority said it expected the power station to resume operations in the

coming hours.

HolidaysResidents of Gaza -- where

two million people live fenced in between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean -- were already receiving only a few hours of mains power before this week.

Israel had been supplying 120 megawatts of electricity to Gaza a month, making up about a quarter of the

territory’s needs, with the Abbas-run Palestinian Authority paying the 11.3 million euros ($12.65 million) monthly bill.

But after Abbas announced he would no longer pay, the Israel Electric Corporation said power supply would “effectively be reduced on two lines out of 10 every day, until the reduction applies to all 10 lines”.

The move threatened to

leave Gazans with as little as two hours of power a day.

“This Egyptian support in Gaza is part of what was agreed at the Cairo meetings,” General Tawfiq Abu Naim, head of security in Gaza, told a news conference in Rafah on Wednesday.

The deliveries will provide relief in the days ahead of the festival of Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. (AFP)

Islamabad

Pakistan has shot down an unmanned Iranian

drone inside its territory in southwestern Baluchistan province, Islamabad said yesterday. The Iranian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) crossed over the border on Monday, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The drone was hit by Pakistan Air Force as it was unidentified and was flying at around 3-4 kms (1 to 2.5 miles) inside Pakistani territory,” it said. The ministry said Islamabad has informed Tehran of its action.

Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been the scene of armed clashes.

Tehran in April protested to Pakistan over a cross-border raid by armed rebels who killed 10 Iranian guards in the restive southeast.

In Sistan-Baluchistan, security forces also frequently clash with drug traffickers.

The province lies on a major transit route for opium and heroin being smuggled from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Cairo

Egypt’s top court yesterday suspended all previous

rulings on whether Cairo can transfer two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, as it considers who has legal jurisdiction.

In the latest twist in a long legal saga, a spokesman for the Constitutional Court said its chief judge had “issued a temporary order to halt the implementation of all rulings that were issued over the Tiran and Sanafir accord”.

The spokesman, Ragab Selim, said the suspension would last until the court could determine which of the legal rulings in the case “will be implemented and which was issued by the institution with jurisdiction”.

He would not say how long it might take for the court to make a decision.

Egypt’s parliament approved the transfer of the islands to Saudi Arabia on June 14 despite significant public opposition.

A lower court had ruled that the transfer would be illegal. (AFP)

China welcomes MSCI admission

Manama

The Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) announced that the

monthly issue of the Sukuk Al-Salam Islamic securities, Sukuk Al-Salam, has been subscribed by 100 per cent.

Subscriptions worth BD43 million were received for the BD43 million issue, which carries a maturity of 91 days.

The expected return on the

issue, which begins on 21st June 2017 and matures on 20th September 2017, is 2.20 % equivalent to the previous issue on 24th May 2017.

The Sukuk Al-Salam are issued by the CBB on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

This is issue No.194 (BH00017767S7) of the short-term Sukuk Al-Salam series.

Beijing

China opened its gates to US beef imports this week,

giving American cattle farmers much sought-after access to the country’s massive market following a 14-year ban.

Shipments of eligible US beef have been allowed to enter China since Tuesday, the General Adminstration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.

Announced last month, the lifting of the beef embargo

was one of the first concrete results of trade discussions that began when Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Donald Trump at the US leader’s resort in Florida in April.

The agreement, seen as a sign of warming trade ties between the world’s largest economies, also gives US natural gas and certain financial services access to China’s market of nearly 1.4 billion people.  In return the US will allow cooked Chinese poultry to enter US markets.

Shanghai

China yesterday hailed the decision by index

compiler MSCI to include it in its key emerging markets list, saying it was a signal of confidence in the world’s number-two economy.

The agreement to admit mainland-listed big-cap stocks -- allowing them to be traded by foreigners -- comes after three failed attempts as China’s leaders aimed to expand its global market influence. “We applaud and appreciate MSCI for making

such a decision,” said Zhang Xiaojun, spokesman for the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

“It showed international investors’ confidence in a stable Chinese economy with better prospects and in the steadiness of China’s financial market,” Zhang said.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed up 0.52pc while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, finished 0.43pc higher.

Oil, gas giants could waste trillions in a 2C world: reportParis

Thirty percent of investments planned by

oil and gas majors over the next decade could be wasted if the world economy retools to cap global warming at two degrees Celsius, researchers warned yesterday.

The 2C (3.6 degree Fahrenheit) target is the cornerstone of the 196-nation Paris Agreement, inked in 2015.

Projects worth $2.3 trillion

(two trillion euros) could become unprofitable as energy shifts toward renewables and if fossil fuel prices stagnate, according to an analysis of investment budgets for 69 publically traded oil and gas companies. Some players will be more exposed than others, said the report, “Two degrees of separation: Transition risk for upstream oil and gas in a low-carbon world.”

Up to 50 percent of ExxonMobil’s proposed

capital expenditure to 2025, for example, is allocated to uneconomical projects likely to disappoint shareholders, the researchers concluded.

Shell, Chevron, Total and Eni were found to have put 30 to 40pc of future spending at risk, about average for the companies examined.

At the other end of the scale, 14 companies -- including state-owned giant Saudi Aramco -- were seen as well-aligned with the 2C scenario.

“This report is a real game-changer for the future of corporate-investor engagement,” said Nathan Fabian, director of policy & research at PRI, a UN-backed network of investors who oversee $62 trillion (56trn euros) in assets.

PRI produced the report in collaboration with Carbon Tracker, a financial think tank that assesses the impact of climate change on capital markets and investment.

The move, according to KFH-Bahrain, is to further strengthen and solidify its retail and corporate banking offering and to rationalise its

KFH-Bahrain is currently in the process of completing the formalities for transferring the real estate portfolio to the aforementioned subsidiary. The transaction also involves reducing the bank’s paid up capital by BD32.6 million as a

result. The bank shall continue to demonstrate compliance with the applicable regulatory ratios after the reduction in the paid up capital. KFH-Bahrain is also maintaining its tier 2 capital.

KFH-Bahrain will also cancel the treasury shares as they are not needed to be reissued in near future, a move that has no real impact on the capital.

Saudi Arabia’s stock market jumped over 5 per cent

yesterday after the architect of the kingdom’s economic reforms was appointed crown prince and index compiler MSCI said it would consider upgrading Riyadh to emerging market status.

The stock index surged 5.5pc, its largest single-day rise since August 2015, to 7,335 points, its highest level since December 2015. Trading volume was the largest this year. Fund managers said the appointment of Prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to be first in line for the throne was not unexpected, but came sooner than anticipated.

He has been the catalyst for radical reforms to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil exports, ranging from a plan to sell a stake in national oil giant Saudi Aramco and dozens of other institutions and reinvest the money in

non-oil industries, to tough austerity plans to eliminate a huge budget deficit.

The market was also buoyed by news that index compiler MSCI would, as expected, start to consider whether to upgrade Saudi Arabia to emerging market status. An upgrade would probably take effect in 2019,

eventually attracting tens of billions of dollars of fresh foreign money.

Food maker Almarai jumped 9.1pc to close at 90.00 riyals yesterday; it hit an all time intra-day high of 90.70 riyals.

EFG Hermes predicts Almarai would see up to $405 million of passive fund inflows

from an MSCI upgrade.

Dubai’s index lost 1.0pc as Dubai Financial Market, the only listed exchange in the Gulf, fell 3.4pc. The Abu Dhabi index closed near flat.

In Qatar, the index sank for a fourth consecutive day to its lowest close in 17 months. Petrochemical producer Industries Qatar fell 2.7pc.

Letters written by Albert Einstein about God, Israel

and physics fetched nearly $210,000 at a Jerusalem auction Tuesday, with the highest bid going to a missive about God’s creation of the world.

Eight letters, written in English between 1951 and 1954 and signed by Einstein, were sold by Winners auction house which had initially estimated their combined value at between $31,000 and $46,000.

The highest bid of $84,000 was for a letter to eminent physicist David Bohm.

In it Einstein wrote: “If God has created the world his primary worry was certainly

not to make its understanding easy for us”.

In another missive to Bohm, which sold for $50,400, Einstein discussed the link his colleague made between quantum theory

and “relativistic field theory”.“I must confess that I am

not able to guess how such unification could be achieved,” Einstein wrote.

The typewritten letter

includes an equation added in neat handwriting and the writer’s signature.

The auction house said the letters came from the estate of Bohm’s late widow.

Dubai

OILElsewhere in the Gulf,

Brent oil’s fall to below $46 a barrel - to levels not seen since November, before global oil producers agreed to cut output to prop up prices - hurt stock markets.

While not disastrous for countries that have embarked on austerity programmes, it could mean governments have less room to boost spending this year than hoped.

The index has shed 11.6pc since June 5, when Saudi Arabia and three other Arab states cut diplomatic and trade links with Doha. (Reuters)

Closing BellSAUDI ARABIA surged 5.5pc to 7,335 points.

DUBAI lost 1.0pc to 3,418 points.

ABU DHABI edged up 0.1pc to 4,459 points.

QATAR dropped 1.8pc to 8,778 points.

EGYPT fell 0.3pc to 13,376 points.

KUWAIT edged down 0.3pc to 6,765 points.

BAHRAIN fell 0.4pc to 1,313 points.

OMAN declined 1.4pc to 5,121 points.

Jerusalem

A spinoff movie of the “Star Wars”

franchise about the early life of smuggler and crack pilot Han Solo has lost its two directors, the production company behind the project said Tuesday. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left the project due to creative differences, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said.

Lord and Miller “are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this

film, and we’ve decided to part ways,” Kennedy said.

“A new director will be announced soon,” said Kennedy, who is also the film’s producer.

In a statement, Lord

and Miller also cited “creative differences”.

“ U n f o r t u n a t e l y , our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative

differences’ but for once this cliche is true,” they said. “We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” they added.

The surprise announcement came as filming is underway at London’s Pinewood Studios for the untitled movie, which is scheduled to come out several months ahead of “Star Wars: Episode VIII” in December 2018.

Variety magazine cited an anonymous source saying that the directors chafed at Kennedy’s tight control on the set. (AFP)

The racing world is changing in this latest Cars escapade

from Pixar. A new generation of fast, efficient motors have arrived on the scene, and a dramatic crash leaves an aging Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) facing retirement. Unfortunately for any parents bored of the franchise or irritated by the premise—why would cars go to a bar and grill? the now–not-so-cocky racer is refusing to hang up his tires.

Despite his flabby wheels and creaky joints,

Lightning is desperate to keep racing and to avoid becoming merchandise (ironic, considering Disney is already selling Cars 3 swim trunks). In an attempt to get his engine revving, he joins a new training facility, complete with track simulators, VR and perky personal trainer Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo). Her story of self-doubt and female inclusion is engaging, while the rest of the plot meanders toward the race to potentially end all races where Lightning aims to beat his latest nemesis,

newbie Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer).

Cars 3 is entertaining enough, delivering the baseline visual joys of this series’ sweeping landscapes and attention to detail. There’s a lot of predictable mush about following your dreams, turning negatives into positives and having the confidence to truly believe in yourself. It’s all well and good for the under-12s, but this movie never packs the kind of emotional punch we know Pixar is capable of. (timeout)

Rid yourself of all regret. Guilt is useless. It doesn’t do anyone any good. Your emotions are volatile and apt to erupt in unexpected bursts. Feel free to let it all out. Today isn’t the best day to ask for sympathy, but that shouldn’t be your goal anyway. Only you can clean out the negative issues.

There’s a fire burning in you today. Be careful how you use it. There’s a chance you could offend someone if you get too excited and fail to notice how your arrogant attitude affects people around you. Take your joy and spread it to the collective by empowering others. You will feel better about yourself and make more friends in the process.

You might have to toughen your skin today. Don’t automatically write someone off because of an action that you think is offensive. Allow others to have their opinions and respect their right to express them openly. Keep an open mind and don’t judge. Maintain a diplomatic attitude and keep your critical thoughts to yourself.

Break away from all mental constraints today. The only thing holding you back could be your own mind. Don’t fear failure. The cards are in your favour. Move forward with the attitude that you’re going to succeed, and you will. Your emotions are strong and active. Things are resonating well for you, so speak your mind openly.

Today you may have difficulty connecting with others. People may be unnecessarily harsh for no reason. Try not to get too emotionally worked up over any slights. Keep a safe distance between you and the drama around you. The next step you take might send you into quicksand, so make sure there’s a good friend nearby to pull you out.

You will be the hit of the party today. Everyone wants to talk to you. Great transitions are happening in your life right now, and you should look at how you can adopt new principles and attitudes. Your emotions suggest that you take an unconventional approach to the day. The things you learn may be things you want to incorporate into your being on a long-term basis.

Unless you want to get into an intellectual sparring match today, you might want to stay home. But this battle of wits could also take place in your own kitchen, so perhaps you should take a long walk by yourself and avoid others. Or simply prepare for battle. People aren’t apt to be very sympathetic to your cause, so wear your armour.

Spend time with good friends today. Share dinner with people you love and feel free to be generous with the food and drink. You have the ability to control just about every situation. Remind others that they’re part of a greater whole and that working together is the key to accomplishing great feats. Inspire others to be the best they can be.

What are you waiting for? Go for the gold. All you need to do is shine. You have the opportunity to merge with powerful groups today, so make sure to keep your eyes open. Do things that will improve your current status in a finance-related situation. Your sharp wit and endless facts and information will come in handy. Have a joke at the ready.

Unexpected things are on the way and it’s best to be emotionally and physically prepared. You may be rather indecisive, but when you do act, your moves manifest in short, powerful bursts. Work to keep your dreams in motion. There are people out there who have the resources you need to be successful. Befriend them and share your goals.

Your thinking is steady and reserved today. Your mind is right in line with your ego, and you will be able to accurately verbalize what is going on inside. You might be a bit reserved in how much you tell people. It could be that others are holding back information from you. Proceed with caution and be honest in all your dealings.

Be aggressive with your thoughts today. You might feel a bit emotionally detached. You will most certainly want your freedom. Spend some time alone to sort things out. An ex from years ago might appear on your doorstep, so don’t be too surprised when he or she shows up. Take a nonjudgmental attitude toward everything you encounter.

A NATO military plane yesterday approached

the plane of Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu above the Baltic Sea, Russian news agencies reported, the third such encounter in three days.

A NATO fighter jet tried to approach Shoigu’s plane but a Russian escort plane intervened to defend it, Interfax news agency reported, citing journalists accompanying the minister.

The escort plane, a Sukhoi SU-27, demonstrated it was armed by rocking its wings, after which the NATO plane flew off, Interfax reported.

Russian state television aired defence ministry footage of the incident, reporting that it took place over neutral waters.

Shoigu was flying to Kaliningrad, a highly militarised Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, to take part in a meeting with defence officials there.

At the meeting, he warned that “the situation near Russia’s western borders is tending to get worse,” TASS news agency reported.

“This is tied with the upsurge of military activity of the NATO countries in Europe,” Shoigu added.

“I can confirm that on June 10 at around 11pm, two young boys aged 13 and 14 fired rubber pellets with a toy that we call an airsoft gun at a group of cyclists” including the king of Thailand, said Thomas Steinkraus-Koch, a spokesman of the

prosecution service in the town of Landshut.

He was unable to say if King Maha Vajiralongkorn was actually hit by one of the rubber pellets.

But the spokesman added that the king’s aides had already informed the prosecution service that he did not wish to press charges.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who ascended the throne following the October death of his father, owns several properties in Bavaria.

I make an urgent appeal to all those conducting military oper-ations in Syria to do everything in their power to protect civil-ians and civilian infrastructure, as fighting continues in Raqa and elsewhere,”

The number of people moving to Britain from

Eastern Europe has fallen by around a third since the Brexit vote, according to a study released yesterday that suggested the plunge in the pound could be to blame.

The study focused on eight countries that became part of the EU in 2004: Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The analysis by the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford pointed to official data showing a fall in allocations of National Insurance numbers to the lowest level

since the countries joined the EU.

National Insurance numbers are required by people looking to work or claim social welfare in Britain.

The number of people registering for National Insurance numbers from the eight countries was 26,000 in the first three months of this year, around a third lower than the first quarter of 2016, the study found.

Britain voted to leave the European Union in June 2016 after a bitter campaign in which mass immigration from the rest of the EU was a key issue.

The controversial Lychee and Dog Meat Festival

has gone ahead in south China yesterday despite rumours that authorities would impose a ban this year.

The festival, which is held every summer solstice, the longest day in the Chinese lunar calendar, puts Yulin, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, into the international media spotlight every June.

Previous reports said that local authorities would ban the dog meat festival, but Yulin’s publicity department denied the alleged ban. They said that they had never issued a ban because the “festival” is not organised by the local

government, it is a folk custom.

Dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Yulin residents ate dog meat with lychees and rice wine at summer solstice, believing the

practice would strengthen their physique.

The festival has been bombarded by animal rights activists and dog lovers for years, however, this year is quieter than usual. (Xinhua)

Militants attack Philippine villageMarawi

Islamic militants launched a day-long assault on a

southern Philippine village yesterday during which they held 31 people hostage inside a school, authorities said, raising fears of spreading violence as other jihadists fought a month-long urban war nearby.

Hundreds of gunmen attacked a lightly guarded military outpost at dawn, with some then taking over the school and using civilians as human shields throughout the day before fleeing at night, the military said.

“It’s all resolved, all the hostages have been accounted

for, no one was hurt,” military spokesman Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said by phone on Wednesday night.

The military said earlier that the gunmen had planted improvised bombs around the school, a small building in a rural area, and that soldiers had surrounded it.

Padilla and a local military spokesman said the militants were able to use the cover of darkness to escape, while leaving their 31 hostages unharmed. They said 12 children were among the hostages.

The unrest occurred in Pigkawayan, a farming town about 160 kilometres (100

miles) from Marawi city where fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have been battling troops for a month in a conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives.

Armed forces spokesman Restituto Padilla said the attackers at Pikgawayan belonged to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), one of four groups in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao that have pledged allegiance to IS.

Local police said the BIFF attack may have been intended to help the militants in Marawi by distracting the military, although Padilla insisted it was unrelated. (AFP)

Washington

Russia has cancelled a meeting with senior US

diplomats in the wake of Washington’s decision to reinforce sanctions imposed over its interference in Ukraine and occupation of Crimea.

US Under Secretary of State Tom Shannon had been due in St Petersburg on Friday to mend diplomatic fences with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

But relations between Moscow and Washington are at a low even by the standards of a rivalry that goes back to the Cold War, and Washington’s decision to ramp up its sanctions regime provoked the anger of President Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin.

Shannon had hoped to address “irritants” in the relationship, such as tension over Moscow’s intimidation of US diplomats and the US seizure of two Russian diplomatic compounds near Washington and New York.

But even this minor first

step towards finding enough common ground to allow the rival nuclear powers to begin to address more fundamental issues -- such as Russia’s intervention in Ukraine -- has now fallen apart.

“We regret that Russia has decided to turn away from an opportunity to discuss bilateral obstacles that hinder US-Russia relations,” spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

On Tuesday, the United States added 38 individuals and entities to its sanctions list targeting the Russians and pro-Russian rebels it blames for the fighting in Ukraine.

This appears to have been what triggered Moscow’s decision to cancel the meeting, although US President Donald Trump also met Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday.

But the State Department

insisted that the sanctions were not being expanded, merely “maintained,” by adding new targets as Moscow finds ways around the previous embargo.

And Washington insisted the punitive measures would stay in place until Russia honors the Minsk agreement to disengage from eastern Ukraine and returns the annexed Crimea region to Kiev. (AFP)

British ex-spy boss says new US world role threat to securityJerusalem

A former head of Britain’s foreign intelligence

agency told an Israeli security conference that the United States’ declining world role under President Donald Trump is today’s greatest menace.

“The biggest threat the world faces is how we all adjust to the progressive withdrawal of responsible American leadership and the network of alliances that America maintained with Europe, with Asian countries and the pattern of alliances and partnerships they had across this region,” John

Sawers said.“It’s going to have a major

disruptive effect and no one is yet adjusting to it,” he added.

“It is now having a major impact in the security world, and I think it’s how we adjust to that -- the behaviours of

other countries trying to take advantage of it -- which poses the biggest threat in the world.”

Since taking office in January, Trump has pledged to overhaul former president Barack Obama’s deal to restore ties with Cuba, reaffirming the existing US trade embargo and tightening rules for Americans visiting the island.

On a trip to Brussels in May, the US president stunned European allies and his entire foreign policy team by removing a line from his speech that highlighted US support of NATO’s security.

Antarctic researchers take icy plunge to mark solstice

New stadium build unearths 1,200-year-old cemetery

Paris

Europe sizzled in a continent-wide heatwave

yesterday, with London bracing for Britain’s hottest June day since 1976 as Portugal battled to stamp out deadly forest fires.

More than 1,000 firefighters were still fighting to control the flames that broke out in central Portugal at the weekend, killing 64 people.

Cooler weather was aiding their efforts, but

thermometers were still hovering around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) -- a level matched across oven-like swathes of Europe, including Italy, Austria, the Netherlands and even alpine Switzerland.

Two forest fires have also broken out since Sunday on Croatia’s southern Adriatic coast, prompting the authorities to evacuate 800 tourists, though the blazes have now been brought under control.

Sydney

Antarctic researchers welcomed the winter

solstice with an exhilarating plunge into icy waters yesterday as they look forward to brighter days after weeks of darkness.

Expeditioners stationed at Australia’s Davis station marked midwinter’s day by taking a chainsaw to the ice, cutting a small pool and taking a dip in water with a temperature of -1.8 degrees Celsius (28.76 Fahrenheit).

Davis station leader Kirsten

le Mar said it was the halfway point for those wintering on the continent and a highlight of the Antarctic calendar.

“After three weeks of darkness, today marks the beginning of longer days in Antarctica, although it will still be 19 days before the sun starts to peek above the horizon here at Davis,” she said.

One of those who took the plunge was electrician Bryce Daniels, who described his quick swim as “amazing”.

Managua

Construction workers building a new national

baseball stadium in Nicaragua unearthed a more than 1,200-year old cemetery with human remains and a great deal of pottery, officials said Tuesday.

The pre-Colombian burial site includes ceramic funeral urns and some human remains like craniums and jawbones, state television reported.

Part of the artifacts found were “a cemetery arrangement from about 800 to 350 years B.C,” said Ivonne Miranda, the director of archaeology at the Nicaraguan Culture Ministry.

“It gives us a better idea how pre-Hispanic society functioned” in the modern-day Managua area, Miranda said.

The items recovered will go on display at the National Culture Museum, she said.

Bahrain national team player Elias Abdul

Redha defeated Dutchman Bas Loohuis in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the men’s singles title in the  68th BMMI Indian Club Open Tennis Championship which concluded on Tuesday night at its premises in Gudaibiya.

The match played in good

spirit and saw the young Bahraini win vital breaks at crucial times to secure his title victory. In the doubles finals match, Dutch pairing of Rick De Groot and Serwin Rampersad defeated Bahraini duo of Rashid Obaidly and Karin Abdul Redha 6-4, 7-5.

The Bahraini pair opened the match on serve, but De Groot and Rampersad won the first break in the third

game for an early 2-1 lead and a second in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.

All seemed lost in the first set for the Bahrainis, but they clawed back with a hard fought break in the eighth and followed up holding serve in the next game.

De Groot and Rampersad wrapped up the set in the next game after 30 minutes of play.

In second set action, the first

ten games all went with serve before Obaidly unfortunately served a double fault and handed the Dutch pair a break and they made no mistake in closing out the set in the next game after 37 minutes to win overall in a shade under 70 minutes on court.

After the match, the Dutch pair said it was a good match, but had to be somewhat careful as the court was quite slippy

and had less grip compared to the other courts they play on around the Kingdom.

The chief guest was past president of The Indian Club Mathew Joseph, who handed out trophies and cash prizes to the winners and runners-up in all five categories played during the tournament.

Tournament sponsors were BMMI, Bahrain Financing Company, VIV, Lulu

Exchange, UAE Exchange KIA Motors and Coca- Cola Malabar Gold.

Other winners (finals): Veterans Singles: Stalin Joseph bt Cassius Pereira 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. Veterans Doubles: Ronald Anacin/Cassius Pereira bt Uday Shanbhag/Stalin Joseph 6-4. 6-2. Super Veterans Singles: Sammy Samaco bt V.V.Mohan 3-6, 7-6, 10-5.

Di María fined for Spanishtax fraudMadrid

Argentina and Paris Saint-Germain star Angel di

Maria has been handed a hefty fine and a prison sentence over a charge of tax fraud of 1.3 million euros ($1.4 million), Spanish authorities announced yesterday.

According to a court document seen by AFP, Di Maria will pay around two million euros to the Spanish authorities after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud committed in 2012 and 2013 when he was a Real Madrid player.

Despite being handed a 16-month sentence, Di Maria will not go to prison as is normal in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years.

Di Maria, 29, played for Madrid between 2010 and 2014, when he joined Manchester United. He then moved to PSG in 2015.

Lowest seeds Zanaco of Zambia went top of their

CAF Champions League group yesterday with a dramatic 1-0 win at Coton Sport of Cameroon, leaving two African giants behind.

Saith Sakala struck in stoppage time with a close-range shot into the far corner and lifted the Lusaka outfit to 10 points in hotly contested Group D.

Record eight-time champions Al Ahly of Egypt have seven points and former title-holders Wydad Casablanca of Morocco six. Pointless Coton Sport are out of the running.

Group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals of a competition with a record $2.5 million (2.25 million euros) first prize on offer this year.

Top seeds Ahly fell 2-0 at second seeds Wydad to suffer their first defeat and concede goals for the first time this season in the Champions

League.   A lacklustre, virtually chance-less clash between Coton Sport and Zanaco in northern city Garoua was meandering toward a goalless draw as the match entered additional time.

But the adventurous spirit of Zanaco throughout the match finally paid off when Sakala controlled an Augustine Mulenga cross and scored with a low left-foot shot.

Sakala scored the first goal when Zanaco defeated Coton Sport 2-1 in Lusaka this month in another match decided by a late goal.

On July 1, Zanaco host Ahly, who are seeking to reach the knockout phase of the premier African club competition for the first time since 2013, when they last lifted the trophy.

Wydad play Coton in Cameroon the same day and will be difficult to contain if they replicate the form that overpowered Ahly before a huge crowd in an 80,000-seat

stadium. Congo Brazzaville-born Fabrice Ondama got behind a defender just after half-time and lobbed the ball delicately over onrushing goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy.

The killer second goal 11 minutes from time involved an equal degree of skill as Walid el Karty nodded a cross into the net from a difficult angle.

Al Merrikh of Sudan came from behind to edge Ferroviario Beira of Mozambique 2-1 in Omdurman and keep alive hopes of a top-two finish in Group A and a quarter-finals berth.

Manuel “Maninho” Fernandes gave the visitors a lead that Elsamani Saadeldin cancelled out before half-time and Ahmed Abdalla snatched the winner on the hour.

Former champions Etoile Sahel of Tunisia top the table with seven points, Merrikh and Ferroviario have four and another Sudanese club, Al Hilal, three.

Tsonga slumps at Queen’s

Zanaco go top

London

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga became the latest star to crash out

of Queen’s Club as the world number 10 was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller yesterday.

After world number one Andy Murray, three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic all endured shock first-round defeats on Tuesday, it was Tsonga’s turn to suffer a surprise second-round exit.

Fifth-seeded Tsonga is traditionally a powerful force

on grass and finished as Queen’s runner-up in 2011, while twice appearing in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

But the 32-year-old, who has won titles in Lyon, Marseille and Rotterdam in 2017, was out of sorts from start to finish against the big-serving Muller.

It took Muller just 69 minutes to hand Tsonga another frustrating loss on the heels of his embarrassing first-round exit against Renzo Olivo at the French Open.

“Sometimes you cannot do anything because the guy in

front of you is doing the right things to make you play in a bad way,” Tsonga said.

“I played two matches here. That’s life. I’ll try to play better in Wimbledon. I have to put a little bit more energy in my game.”

Muller’s impressive display maintained his recent surge, which has seen the 34-year-old win the ‘s-Hertogenbosch grass-court tournament last week and reach a career-high ranking of 26.

Muller is in the quarter-finals at the Wimbledon warm-up event for a third

successive year and will play former Queen’s champion Sam Querrey or Australia’s Jordan Thompson for a place in the last four.

Grigor Dimitrov fought back to avoid becoming yet another big name casualty as the Bulgarian world number 11 defeated France’s Julien Benneteau 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Dimitrov won Queen’s in 2014 and, given the way the tournament has unfolded, the sixth seed must fancy his chances of claiming the title again. The 26-year-old was pushed hard by the world

number 87 in almost two hours on court in searing heat, but he battled through to set up a quarter-final clash with Australian wild card Thanasi Kokkinakis or Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. It is the first time Dimitrov has made the last eight of an ATP event since Rotterdam in February.

Dimitrov insisted he tuned out all the drama involving the other top seeds in case it affected his focus

“That’s not a healthy way of thinking when you play a tennis match,” he said.

“It’s tiring as it is to have to

fight for every point and try to find a way to win, and if those kind of thoughts are starting to come into your head, then you’re going to lose.”

Donald Young reached the Queen’s quarter-finals for the first time as the American world number 55 defeated Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-4.

Young, who arrived at Queen’s on a five-match losing streak, faces former US Open champion Marin Cilic or American qualifier Stefan Kozlov with a semi-final berth at stake. (AFP)

Highland Reel produced a courageous performance to battle back and win the

feature race of the second day of Royal Ascot the Group One Prince of Wales’s Stakes yesterday.

The multiple Group One winner -- who won the Coronation Cup earlier this month at Epsom -- also gave Irish training great Aidan

O’Brien his first win of the

meeting after a succession of favoured runners had failed to fire.

The five-year-old -- who last year won the King George Vi and Queen Elizabeth Stakes also at Ascot and the Breeder’s Cup Turf -- looked beaten as Ulysses and Decorated Knight passed him with two furlongs to race.

However, jockey Ryan Moore galvanised him again and the horse’s never say

die spirit saw him surge back into contention and draw level

so all three were in a line entering the final half furlong.

However, it was the other two who

cracked and Highland Reel crossed the line first to win at 9/4.

Decorated Knight took second under Andrea Atzeni and Ulysses, who had looked all out the winner with a furlong to run, third under champion jockey Jim Crowley.

For O’Brien and Moore it represented a huge relief especially after the disappointing run of dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill in the feature race on Tuesday the St James’s Palace Stakes where he failed to sparkle and finished fourth. (AFP)

Saudi Arabia to host women’s professional squash event

Kvitova reaches first quarters of come back

London

Saudi Arabia will stage a women’s squash

tournament later this year with world champion Nour El Sherbini and eight-time world title winner Nicol David appearing in a rare public airing for women’s sport in the kingdom.

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) said the PSA Women’s Masters will be staged at Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University in Riyadh from October 29 to November 2.

“The $165,000 tournament will play a crucial role in inspiring a new generation of Saudis to become active within sport,” said a PSA statement. PSA Chairman and Saudi businessman Ziad Al-Turki.

Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan, under secretary president of the Women’s Department of the General Authority for Sport in Saudi Arabia, added: “We look forward to growing the female participation of the sport of squash. It is a dynamic game that involves fast thinking and fast reaction times, skills that are well reflected in the women of Saudi Arabia.”

Birmingham

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova

was cheered as if she had been the home player, after a straight-sets win over Britain’s Naomi Broady in Birmingham carried her into a first quarter-final in eight months.

The applause was not intended as any slight to Broady, but as acknowledgement of an encouraging performance by the Czech, whose career may still be at risk from the injuries inflicted on her by an intruder with a knife six months ago.

Kvitova did serve a few double faults which briefly seemed worrying, but hit some fine ground strokes and moved better than she used to in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. She seemed taken aback when asked after the match if she knew that she was widely considered as one of the favourites for the tournament.

“I didn’t hear that,” she said. “I don’t really care – it’s too early,” she added, mindful of this being only her fourth match since the trauma of having five fingers and two tendons of her left hand damaged. Next up could be Kristina Mladenovic, who caused a stir at Roland Garros two weeks ago by eliminating the defending champion Garbine Muguruza.

Bolt to run in MonacoParis

Eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt will run the 100 metres at the

Diamond League meeting in Monaco on July 21, organisers announced yesterday.

The Jamaican sprinting legend is competing in his final season before retirement and will use the Monaco event

as a warm-up for the world championships in London that start on August 5.

The world-record holder (9.58sec) won his first race of the year in Kingston earlier this month in 10.03sec, and is also due to run in Ostrava on June 28.

Bolt, who has won three Olympic 100m-200m doubles, will only compete

in the 100m for his farewell at the worlds.

The 30-year-old saw his tally of Olympic gold medals reduced from nine to eight earlier this year, when the Jamaican team were stripped of their 2008 4x100m medals after Nesta Carter’s disqualification for doping.

Moscow

Cristiano Ronaldo said Portugal were

worthy winners after scoring his first goal of the

Confederations Cup to steer his country to a 1-0 victory

over hosts Russia yesterday. .The Real Madrid star brushed off the tax

storm clouding his club future by heading in the only goal in Moscow after just eight minutes to send the Euro 2016 champions above Russia at the top of Group A.

“We’re very happy, it’s the first time Portugal have won in Russia. The team played very well against a side playing at home with the support of their fans. But we were better, we had more chances,” said Ronaldo.

“We won, we have four points and you have to congratulate our team,” added the 32-year-old, named man of the match for the second time in the tournament.

Group rivals Mexico and New Zealand meet later in Sochi.

The Portuguese camp had insisted ahead of this game that their skipper was focused solely on matters on the field in Russia despite the speculation surrounding his future at Real.

He has been accused by Spanish authorities of evading 14.7 million

euros ($16.5m) in tax and has been summoned to appear in court

next month in Madrid. The four-time Ballon

d’Or winner -- the world’s highest-paid athlete according to

Forbes magazine -- has said his “conscience is clear” in the matter but has reportedly threatened to leave Real.

Despite the off-field disruption, Ronaldo picked up the man-of-the-match award in Portugal’s opening 2-2 draw with Mexico on Sunday.

And he was all smiles escorting a young mascot in a wheelchair out onto the pitch in Moscow before he netted his first goal of the tournament inside eight minutes at the home of Spartak Moscow.

Raphael Guerreiro’s towering cross from the left flank hung in the air and found Ronaldo, who rose at the far post to head back across Igor Akinfeev.

It was a miserable start for the Russian skipper, who was making his 100th international appearance.

Ronaldo’s goal was the highlight of the first period, although he forced Akinfeev into a save from point-blank range with a shot midway through the half.

Soon after the break, Akinfeev kept Russia in the game with a one-handed reflex save from four metres out to deny Andre Silva’s bullet header.

But Portugal then lost Guerreiro to injury, with coach Fernando Santos conceding the Borussia Dortmund player had been taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

The hosts were unlucky not to force an equaliser after a string of chances in a strong second-half display.

They started to shade the midfield battle after the break as Alexander Yerokhin was introduced in place of defender Roman Shishkin.

Russia upped the pace and Fedor Smolov just failed to connect with an Alexander Samedov cross as the hosts attacked in waves with the home crowd urging them on.

Defender Georgy Dzhikia headed over the bar from the game’s final corner in added time with Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov agonising on the sidelines. (AFP)
