Nga Mihi Nui Whanau Issue 15 22 October                  2015

The countdown is on! Only nine more weeks to end of the term and then a hop and skip into                                       Christmas. I was thrilled to see all our classrooms fully functional on day one this term getting into                                   learning and fitting as much as possible into this term. Not only do we have full steam ahead in                                     classrooms but also planning for 2016. One of the key documents is our Development Plan which                               guides the direction of the school. There has been a lot of changes taken place over the last five years                                       at Mangonui School. It has come into the modern world with modern teaching practices and modern                               learning tools. Next year we want to firmly focus on consolidating these practices/ directions to make                               sure they are fully functional and strong across the school. We need to make sure that there is a                                     common theme and common language running through our school so what our students learn in one                               class links to another. Common expectations and actions are essential.

Principal’s Korero  (con’t from front page)

Last week the Learning Change Network Schools had a hui looking at how our schools can                               make ownership of digital devices more achievable. All schools agreed that they wanted to set                             up systems so students and whanau owned the devices rather than the schools. We were                             lucky to have the principal from Paihia School who has set up two Trusts to allow for whanau                                   to purchase digital devices. BUT there are some rules that are put in place that everyone                               needs to adhere too for it to work. These are some of the rules that the Paihia Cluster has in                                       place: Everyone purchases the same device There is a cluster of schools in Auckland called the                               ManaiaKalani Cluster. They employ several technicians to identify the best solutions (as far as                           brand/ make etc) for their schools. They employ one company to set these devices up so they                                 are safe, robust and ready to roll on day one with a three year warranty. Having the one brand                                     makes management a lot easier.   All parents sign up to Professional Learning In order to be able to have your child bring                                   their device home parents must attend 3 courses on the use of the device. There will need to                                 be a certain amount paid on the device before bringing home.   Weekly Payment About $40 payment up front and then $5 per week until paid off. The cost                                   of the device is around $400. About two years of payments. There will also be a cheaper option                                 to buy up front at a discounted price. Connecting to Intermediate Schools We are hoping that most of the other schools in the                               Far North will be on board with this scheme. The rules for Mangonui School will be the same                                   as all the other schools. This means if a child buys the computer at one school they then can                                     pay off at another school. The contracts will be able to move between schools.  We are now starting work on developing a clear set of guidelines around the digital devices.                               We are going to follow models like the Paihia and ManaiaKalani Cluster as they are already                               working effectively. There are a lot of issues to work through to make sure everybody is happy.                                 We are hoping to start in 2016 with one year group and then open it up to Year 4 students                                       upwards in 2017.   We have purchased a computer that is situated in the office area that is available to any of our                                     whanau to use for the purpose of connecting with your childs learning. Come and see our how                                 Google Sites work or check out your childs blog.   On Wednesday 11th November between 3pm4.30pm there will be a Google afternoon for                         parents to learn more about Google Sites, Blogs and Google Accounts. If you want a really                               basic starter course this is for you. We will advertise this later in the term.   Dave Sedcole

Can you solve this Maths Problem? Reversing Numbers

Take any 2digit number. Reverse the digits to make another 2digit number. Add the two numbers together. How many answers do you get which are still 2digit numbers? What do the answers have in common?

Answer from last newsletter    fishy

1. Pour this water into the 7 litre container. This leaves 3 litre empty. 2. Fill the 4 litre container again. 3. Pour this amount into the 7 litre container until it is filled to the top. 4. As the 7 litre container could only hold another 3 litres, there should be 1 litre left over in the 4 litre container. 5. Pour this litre of water into the fishbowl

MANGONUI SCHOOL GARDEN SQUAD

Kia Ora everybody, Garden squad here! Here’s a brief update on our project garden. Over the holidays we had outside help filling prepping our garden beds. Thanks to Alan Moros from the Professionals who kindly donated the compost and Carl Maria who delivered our topsoil, we now have four amazing garden beds ready to plant. Throughout the project we have had awesome support and sponsorship from the following local businesses:

● Coastal Homes ● Mangonui ITM ● Mangonui Haulage ● Justa Plumber ● Professionals Real Estate ● Taupo Bay Plumbers ● Diamond Steel ● County Excavators ● D-Bay Hire & Mangonui Mowers and Chainsaws ● Hammer Hardware

Please support these businesses!! Stay local ‘cos we’re local!! Thank you to everybody who has helped in any way. Without you we would not be where we are now. Watch this space, more movement in the not to distant future. Linda, Josh and the Garden Squad.
