Executive summary

Currently, Compellent storage does not have the instrumentation required for full support in

OpenManage Essentials. You can configure OME to provide valuable functionality such as monitoring

Compellent hardware alerts, forwarding alerts using email, and launching into the Compellent

management application.

Introduction

Compellent support in OpenManage Essentials is currently under development by the Compellent and

OME teams. Until formal support is added to the OME, there are some manual steps that provide

limited, yet useful, support of Compellent storage.

After following the steps in this white paper, you can do the following:

1. View your discovered Compellent storage in the OME device tree (using custom group).

2. Right-click launch from the Compellent entry in the device tree into the Compellent management

application.

3. View Compellent SNMP hardware alerts in the OME alert console.

4. Create alert actions or email filters on Compellent hardware alerts (For example: send emails

when a Compellent hardware alert is received).

Discovering your Compellent storage

In this example, we discover the Compellent storage using the SNMP protocol. Because this is officially

an unsupported device, the array shows up in the OME device tree under the Unknown device group.

1. In the Discovery Wizard, enter the IP address.

2. After you enter the IP Address of your Compellent device, run the discovery and see if it is

classified as an Unknown device.

3. Create a custom group for Compellent Storage and add that particular device to the new group.

4. On the first page of the wizard, assign a name to the group and then choose the IP address of your

Compellent storage from the Unknown group.

5. View the summary of your actions in the Summary page.

The device populates in the new custom group that you created. Because it is unknown, there is not a

lot of inventory information displayed. Once OME has formal support for Compellent, detailed

inventory information displays on this page.

The new Compellent group is now populated. Figure 5.

Creating a custom launch point

Now that you have discovered your Compellent storage and created your custom group, you can create a

custom right-click action for this device.

OME allows user defined URLs for device groups. In this example, we create a launch point that goes to

the URL used for Compellent management.

1. Navigate to the OME Preferences > Custom URL Settings screen.

2. Click the plus (+) sign on the right side of the screen to create a new launch point.

3. Enter the URL and other required info and click Ok.

The new launch point displays on your Compellent storage device.

Receiving Compellent SNMP traps

OME includes trap definitions for Compellent Storage. While there is work underway to enhance and

extend these definitions, OME currently receives and formats the traps that are currently supported.

You must use SNMP V1 for the traps.

Below is an example screen shot from OME displaying the supported alerts:

Confirm these traps work by configuring your Compellent storage to send SNMP traps to OpenManage

Essentials.

1. Refer to the screen shots below for configuring the SNMP trap destination in Compellent.

2. Once configured, generate a test trap from your Compellent Storage to see if it is showing up in

the OME Alert Console as indicated in the screenshot below.

3. In the OME console, Navigate to Manage > Alerts to verify that all of the SNMP traps were

received.

4. Locate the test traps and right click to display the details.

Creating Email alert actions

Once you verify that you can receive Compellent SNMP traps into OpenManage Essentials, then create

different types of useful filters. These include ignore, email, app launch, and forward filters. The

OpenManage Essentials User Guide and white papers are good sources of information on how to create

these filters. Use the following example:

It is common for administrators to get email alerts whenever there is a hardware failure or when a

device is in a degraded state. To create this type of alert, use the following steps:

1. Navigate to the Manage > Alerts screen of the OME console.

2. Click the Common Tasks sub-menu.

3. Click the New Alert Email Action menu.

4. Enter the email address of the administrator to receive the alert.

5. For this example, select all criticalities for the email action.

8. On the last page of the wizard you can limit the time or days that the rule is triggered. For the

purposes of this example, the default values are not changed.

10. Once this rule is created, send another test trap from your storage device. It displays in the OME

alert console, and later arrives in your mailbox.

Conclusion

After reviewing the example procedures in this white paper, you can now demonstrate:

1. A discovered Compellent device that shows up in the OME device tree.

2. A right-click launch action that links to the embedded Compellent storage management software.

3. Support for formatted Compellent SNMP hardware traps.

4. Support for email, trap forward, and app launch filters to help monitor the health of your storage

array.
