9 Birthday Greetings

9 Green Corner

Every year we wish each other for a better, happy and prosperous year ahead. Now at the wake of the New Year there are reasons for NCRCL to be sure about what lies ahead. Since inception of NCRCL, there has been stress on

values with our motto being “Values Beyond Consulting”.

We have been positively following the principle of being different and being good. However with the changing environment, there is a strong need in us to move to the next level of our existence, not just in terms of better

performance but in terms of real achievements. And we know the success formula for this – strengthening of our processes. And as consultants, we have

been time and again repeating that any process has to have a good direction. Well directed processes alone can achieve success. However even such processes need refinement and fine-tuning. This is what we have been doing in

the last two months at NCRCL!

Thanks to Mr. Jordi Griera (of Spain) – we are now internalizing the process of Management by Values (MBV) which becomes the backbone to truly achieve our principle message of ‘Values Beyond Consulting’. In this systematic and simple exercise, which I am sure all of us have enjoyed and are enjoying, Jordi simply took us back to our own basics. I stress on the words ‘our own’ because all that

he explained, debated, taught us and trained us was based on Indian thinking and philosophy. The ‘five’ core ingredients of the values have been stressed in Upanishads and Vedas. The meditation he taught

us is based on our traditional principles. However we did get a scientific dimension to the entire exercise from Jordi for each and every step in the process.

The video conferencing at last has synced well between Chennai and Bengaluru offices and this has provided us with yet another opportunity to interact much more frequently and intensely. The Mission statement is now finalized, the Vision imagery is ready. Our Mission now reads as “Our Mission is to

apply our professional capabilities with a holistic approach for the happiness of clients, through values and social commitment”. Every word in this mission statement has been deliberated, debated, organized, and understood. Now they need to be internalized. This means that

we need to imbibe the philosophy totally in all we do.

Even during this exercise we made it very clear that our personal mission and organization mission are not very much different. In the organizational mission, the element of client is present, in our personal statement this is simply replaced by our family and society. Similarly the words ‘professional

capabilities’ are replaced by ‘personal abilities’.

To provide more clarity:

• Happiness of clients: this is the key. The client comes to us for getting his/her problems solved. Once the problems are solved he/she is happy. Ultimately they come to get happiness from us.

How do we give them happiness – through our professional capabilities;

• Professional capabilities: are those that we have acquired by qualification, experience, and training; and that which we are

upgrading on a continuous basis. And the professional capabilities can be applied to the

benefit of our clients only if we have a holistic approach;

• Holistic approach: enables us to look at every assignment in a

way that will not just fix clients’ prob lem s but prov ide

solutions and hence will be looked at from various perspectives.

Management by Values

Although the year 2010 has come to a close, it has brought about a new beginning in the lives of the NCRCL team members. November 1, 2010 brought in a month long sojourn that could bring in a sea of change this year. It was a day when Mr. Jordi Griera of INEVAL foundation stormed into our lives with his unique ideas on “Management by Values”.

After a brief discussion with Mr. Jordi on requirements, a room was cleared and scrubbed clean for physical exercises! This was followed by a bird’s eye view on what was in store for NCRCLites in the coming weeks.

Every participant was asked to fill in a questionnaire called the INEVAL Tool pertaining to the individ-ual and the organisation.

The participants at Chennai had two-hour sessions almost everyday which included presentations, mental and physical exercises. The Bangalore group benefited through a three day workshop by Mr. Jordi.

This innovative and eclectic way of understanding Management by values included features to evoke the spiritual side of a seeker and also change the way one works in an organisation. The four levels of a personality – conscious, subconscious, unconscious and super-conscious- need to undergo change and these four levels were addressed through this training.

The unique yet very scientific idea of focusing on the five lumbars in the human vertebrae which dominates/controls most of the physical postures was a lesson that enabled us to un-

derstand the characteristic of an individual. A person displays distinct physical postures which are linked to any one or more of the five lumbars. Suitable physical exercises to balance and

activate the other less dominating lumbars formed a part of the exercise routine. The physical exercises not only elimi-nated stiffness or blocks in the physical body but also helped in de-stressing completely!

On a mental level, awareness of the four levels of personality and focus on those areas were brought out through active individual and group meditation practices.

This transformation within each individual would automatically bring forth a lateral shift in the organisation as the approach of each individual towards the organisation undergoes a change. This was evident in the passion with which each team member contributed in building the NCRCL mission and vision statements.

NCRCL thanks Mr. Murali and Mr. Jordi for introducing this innovative concept into our lives. This transformation is bound to happen in every individual, uplifting the person into new realms of spirituality and uplifting the Organisation to a higher realm through efficient “Management by Values”.

Charity begins at home is an adage which we at NCRCL have followed by taking the first steps through implementation of management by values. We also hope to bring about a similar change in all our clients and friends by introducing this new and uplifting concept!

Hope this New Year brings about both individual and group transformation. Let us join together and make this implementation a grand success.

Whatever is required to be done ethically and professionally will be done so that that the client is happy. The approach has to be different from all the competitors and there need to be proper values and social commitment;

• Values: we know already that we have identified four different values: professional, ethical, human and spiritual, and we will stand by them and such values need to reflect not only as beneficial to the client community but also should not be against societal interests;

• Social commitment: there are several aspects of social commitment right from environment to consciously working for social causes that are covered under corporate social responsibility about which the focus of the corporate world seems to have turned.

Thus our mission statement is a very comprehensive one. We need to work for the happiness of our clients. And unless we ourselves are happy – we will not be able to give happiness to clients. In our profession, only a well qualified, experienced, creative and committed person without ego can be a happy person. Once the clients are happy we get so many things in return: first and foremost professional satisfaction, recognition, honour, etc. and one of such returns is money… and good money at that. But if we focus only on money, then we lose out on so many things. So let us not forget our mission.

The year 2011 comes up with so much of positive energy and professional responsibilities; let us welcome the same with utmost commitment and joy!

Wishing all of you a very Happy and Enjoyable 2011, marked by Achievements, and Accolades, and Abundance!

Zen Story - Buddha's Zen

Buddha said: "I consider the positions of kings and rulers as that of dust motes. I observe treasures of gold and gems as

so many bricks and pebbles. I look upon the finest silken robes as tattered rags. I see myriad worlds of the universe as

small seeds of fruit, and the greatest lake in India as a drop of oil on my foot. I perceive the teachings of the world to be

the illusion of magicians. I discern the highest conception of emancipation as a golden brocade in a dream, and view the

holy path of the illuminated ones as flowers appearing in one's eyes. I see meditation as a pillar of a mountain, Nirvana

as a nightmare of daytime. I look upon the judgment of right and wrong as the serpentine dance of a dragon, and the rise

and fall of beliefs as but traces left by the four seasons."

Don't preheat: Don't bother if you are broiling,

roasting or baking a dish that will cook for an

hour or more. Don't preheat for more than 10

minutes for breads and cakes. And when roast-

runs out; food will continue to cook without using

the extra electricity.
