July 2020 July marks the birth of two North American nations: Canada and the United States of America. On July 1st, Canada Day, the red and white colors of the Maple Leaf flag, will be flown proudly all over Canada. On this date in 1867, three separate colonies —Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (comprising Ontario in the west and Quebec in the east)—united under the British North America Act. The holiday was first called Dominion Day, and the original festivities were literally “rung in” by ringing the bells at Toronto’s Cathedral Church of St. James. The name Canada Day was formally adopted in 1982 and is celebrated with picnics, fireworks, and parades. Even the Royal Canadian Mounted Police get in on the action to perform their famous Musical Ride, a horseback drill review set to music. On July 4th, Independence Day, Americans will be waving the Stars and Stripes. Like their Canadian neighbors, Americans also split from England. The United States declared independence for themselves on July 4, 1776—with the help of Thomas Jefferson’s pen. Founding Father John Adams immediately understood the day’s importance, commenting, “It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time.” Americans have taken Adams’ advice to heart for nearly 240 years.

What’s Lucky in July?
Lucky Color: Gold Lucky Animal: Panther

George Glenn Porter was born on October 24, 1931 in Greenland, Arkansas. His
parents, B.L. & Zena had 5 other children, only 1 girl amongst all those boys. Those brothers
are some of George’s most treasured memories as a youngster. He remembers walking to the
white river not far from the family home & going fishing with his brothers.
The family did move some but had a love for NWA where they would return and
George would go to Fayetteville High School and graduate from there. He would stay right
there and become a loyal HOG fan where he earned a teaching degree at the University of
Arkansas.
George is a patriotic man & apparently always has been. He served our country for a
total of 32 years, Thank you for your service George!!! He was enlisted in the National
Guard and the U. S. Army where he was stationed in Berlin & Germany to name a few. He
was active during WWII, that’s some history before our very eyes! He spoke of Desert Storm
often.
On June 26, 1964, George married Ann Crevier. They had begun dating after being
introduced by a mutual friend at daisy manufacturing. Now that was a great friend!! George
& Ann have 2 boys, Mark & Scott. Mark lives in Bentonville & Scott lives in Marvell,
Arkansas. Mark has 2 boys also, Scott has 1 daughter. They loved spending time with the
entire family. Destin was a favorite family vacation spot, many memories were made on the
white sandy beaches enjoying the sunshine there. Those memories are precious with the
recent loss of Zena in March.
It couldn’t be all vacations; George used that teaching degree I talked about earlier at
Bentonville Public Schools. Yep, we have another teacher amongst us! He taught primarily
History and Civics. He moved on to be the assistant superintendant of the schools, where he
stayed until retirement in 1985.
Retirement….um not so much. He then started working at Wal-Mart in their
gardening center. Gardening had always been a much loved hobby of his, so hey why not?!
George continued his new found career in the gardening center for 23 years before really
retiring. For real this time.
Between all the working George enjoyed going to as many Razorback sporting events
as he could, GO HOGS! He supported Mark’s boys during their baseball games every
chance he got.
I like to find out about favorites, so George’s favorite foods, it’s a toss up… steak &
potatoes or Italian. Throw in some Pecan Pie and he’s a happy man. We are very blessed to
have George here at the Meadows!

Fourth of July Breakfast Toast
June Highlights
For each piece of toast you’ll need: • 2 T cream cheese • 1 slice bread • 9 blueberries • 1 T strawberry jam or jelly (or any other red preserve) • 4 round banana slices, cut in half
1. Spread cream cheese evenly over bread slice from edge to edge.
2. Place blueberries on the upper left corner in rows, all touching each other. (See image.) The blueberries represent the stars on the U.S. flag.
3. Spread jam or jelly evenly over cream cheese (the part not covered with blueberries).
4. Lay halved banana slices in single-layer rows for the white stripes of the flag. (See image.) And serve!
CAN’T SLOW US DOWN! We celebrated “C.N.A. Appreciation Week” during June 18 – 23; yes, while
celebrating Father’s Day also. Every day of C.N.A. week had a special theme for both
employees & residents. We had a tie dye day, beach day, pj day, artist day ( Crystal
Bridges brought their traveling art exhibit and brought each resident their own
painting art packet ) & a casual day.….so here are just a few pictures of that crazy
week. OHHHH Father’s Day! Yes, the men had a special cookout on Friday afternoon
& everyone enjoyed “Dad’s Root Beer Floats” on Sunday, June 21. What a week that
was!! But we are so thankful for our amazing group of C.N.A.’s that we have here &
wanted to let them have a little bit of fun & interact with our residences too! Success!
JULY BIRD ~ EAGLE
You are supremely confident. Your listening skills are second to none. Total strangers will often find themselves
telling their life story to you. Highly trustworthy, you will keep your sensitive information a complete secret. You
are also able to offer patient, heartfelt advice to lift spirits or nudge others in the right direction.
Birthstone – RUBY
The word ruby comes from the Latin word rubens, meaning “red.” Rubies can
range in color from light raspberry to dark purple. The Mogok rubies from
Myanmar, formerly Burma, are the most valuable and sought-after rubies because
of their color, described as pigeon-blood red. Large rubies of good quality are very rare—and very expensive. In fact, the ruby is the highest-priced colored gemstone.
