Students perform Namasankeerthanam inAachi Amman temple

By Our StaffReporter

Janaki Ramamani(resident of 4/1,Chakrapani StreetExtn. West Mam-balam) and her 30students performedHari Naamasan-keerthanam on Jan.12 in Devi Sri AachiAmman Tem-ple, T.Nagar, as part ofPongal celebrations inthe temple.

‘Calcutta’ N. Viswanathan, a college professor and theaterfigure, enjoyed a brief but bright innings in Tamil Cinema ascharacter actor and his performance in every film was of ofsuch high standard as is rarely seen in Tamil Cinema. Sadly,he was not used properly by the Tamil film world and he wentback to Calcutta. His son Ashok Viswanathan is makingwaves as a bright filmmaker.

Even though “Antha Naal” won a Delhi Award it was not abox-office success. The Tamil moviegoer was not yet ready toaccept that kind of a song-less dance-less film, which cameahead of its time. Frequently screened on television today, thefilm is now treated as a classic of Tamil Cinema.

(The successful and popular Tamil filmmaker ‘Muktha’Srinivasan worked in this film as assistant director and he wascredited in the titles as V. (for Venkatachari!) Srinivasan.)

Soon Balachander turned producer promoting his owncompany’SB Creations’, a novel name for a movie company atthat time. Under this banner he produced three memorablemovies ‘’Avana Ivan?’’ (1962), ‘’Bommai”(1964)and ‘’NaduIravil’’ (1970). All these films were inspired by Hollywoodmovies but suitably adapted by Balachander who wrote, directed and produced them besides composing the music. Healso played the lead roles (except in “Bommai”) with muchimpact.

“Avana Ivan?” was inspired by the Hollywood classic madeby the celebrated filmmaker George Stevens’’ A Place In TheSun’’ (1951) which was based on the American classic novel byTheodore Dreiser,’An American Tragedy’ which in turn wasbased on a sensational American murder case. Balachanderblazed a new trail by bringing out a gramophone record of thetitle music in the movie which became popular and sold well.Even today such records of title music are rarely done.

‘’Bommai’’ was a rehash of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.Thefamed musician and cult figure K. J. Yesudas took his bow inTamil Cinema as playback singer in this film with the song‘’Neeyum Bommai, Naanum Bommai” which became quitepopular. Another song by L. R. Eswari, “ThatthiThatthi”alsobecame a hit. In this film Balachander introduced anothernovelty by showing the technicians on screen, which had earlierbeen done by N. S. Krishnan in his hit”Mana Magal’’. That wasnot all. Balachander had the artistes sell tickets at the box-office window in a Madras cinema! A first of its kind in cinema!

“Nadu Iravil’’ was a rehash of the Hollywood hit’’And ThenThere Were None’’ (1945) which was an adaptation of the mostpopular novel of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie ‘TenLittle Niggers’. For obvious reasons this novel was called ‘TenLittle Indians’ in the United States. Interestingly this classicnovel has been repeatedly filmed both for the big and smallscreen from time to time. But the 1945 version made by thefamed French filmmaker Rene Clair tops the list and thrillsviewers to this day even after repeated viewing.

After a hectic innings in cinema as actor, writer, director, music composer and producer Balachander gave up films, much to the regret of many and went back to the world ofClassical Carnatic Music where he became a legend in his ownlifetime as a Veena maestro.

A good friend of this writer and a source of encouragement, the two worked for sometime on a thriller film project during thelate 1980s. But sadly it did not take off mainly due to Balachander’s obsessive involvement in the world of music!

He created history of his own in Tamil Cinema and his exitis definitely an irreparable loss to the world of movies.

He passed away suddenly in 1990 when he was on a concerttour of northern India. The man may be gone but his moviesshall live forever and be cherished by his innumerable fans andadmirers.

‘Never buy death’By Dr. Robin J Bensam

I felt like writing this article because I lost a very good friend at ayoung age. This piece is on Health Awareness, Self Medication andHealth Insurance.

These days we lack health awareness. Remember ‘Health is Wealth’.The joy of good health can never be obtained by wealth. I can even sayexcess wealth may also lead to trouble. When we talk about awarenessI would like to remind you of three common killer diseases - Bloodpressure, Diabetes, Heart Attack. Once blood pressure always bloodpressure throughout life. We commonly tackle this issue only with dietcontrol. Seldom can it be solved with diet control. Many people treat thisdisease like they treat a simple fever. We just take medicine and stopwhen the BP comes to normal. It is not right. Most of the time we needto continue the medicine lifelong. I have come across many who arescared of checking their BP. Both high and low blood pressure can leadto problems. Salt is your first enemy. I still remember when an old ladylanded up in a coma when I was working in Apollo Hospital. We hadto put her on ventilator and were luckily able to revive her. We weresurprised to hear from her later that she hid a bottle of pickle in herkitchen and happily ate it. We need to sacrifice something to live longer.

Diabetes has become very common in our country. I repeat, both highand low sugar are dangerous. Happily, there are many sweets in themarket which do not increase the blood sugar level. Diabetes is a diseasewhich can destroy all parts of our body slowly from skin, nail to kidneyand heart. Do not take it easy.

Heart attack is very common for those above 30. Cholesterol is themajor cause of heart disease. Almost all our dishes have coconut as amajor ingredient. Let’s cut down on oil in our food. Never ever ignorea chest discomfort, meaning discomfort in the middle of the chest, notto the left as many think. Gastritis and cardiac pain may mimic eachother. I remember visiting a patient at midnight with chest discomfortin Anna Nagar. He was an advocate. He told me, “Doc, I just had somespicy food. It must be gastritis. I have taken Gelusil. It will be alright”.But I insisted on doing an ECG. We did the ECG and it revealed amassive heart attack. We shifted him to hospital at once. He is livinghappily today. I am also happy that I saved a life that day. We cannotplay with health. Anyone over 30 must get his/her health checked oncea year. A little bit of exercise will certainly help one keep fit. Getting adisease is not a sin. It is a part of life.

Never self medicate. It’s high time we all must know that self medi-cation is like inviting ill health. Do you know that the simple Crocintablet we take every day is injurious to liver? One of myfriends invited death at a young age of 45. One day he told me, “Doc,my sugar was 400. I brought it down to 90 in one shot. Little did I knowhe was playing with insulin. Insulin is a very powerful drug which mustnever be used without doctor’s advice. Insulin can kill instantly ifhandled wrongly.

Share your problems with your friends or family doctor. Every familymust have a doctor. Who is an ideal family doctor? The family doctormust be accessible over phone at anytime. We must visit the doctorwhen we are hale and healthy. Preventive health care is a very impor-tant area we need to concentrate on. Allocate time for health. Music is agood way to get rid of stress. Move away from your stressful work andrelax with any activity which will make you forget your office work.

Lastly, I would like to talk about health insurance. Most of us will haveLIC policies because they sound very lucrative and help in saving tax.Every person in the middle income group must have a mediclaimpolicy. We do not know when a disease will knock at our door. We maynot have money at that moment. If we have a health insurance we neednot worry about money. We can walk into a multi-speciality hospital.Otherwise we face the prospect of having to search for a governmenthospital. There are varieties of policies to suit every family. Please dotake a policy today and feel secure.

My special advice to the younger generation, please look after yourparents. Take them for a health check today. Tell them you are withthem. Do not abandon them. Put yourself in their shoes, you will realizewhere and what you are. Never buy death. Let it come spontaneously.A precious life is given to us. Let’s live it happily. Let’s pass on thathappiness to our next generation. Take care.

By Our Staff ReporterSale of Bhogi drums, once popular among children

who beat them while dancing around bonfires lit onBhogi day, a day before Pongal, has witnessed asharp decline in recent years in the wake of cam-paigns for ‘smokeless’ Bhogis. Another reason couldbe the steep rise in prices from a few rupees a decadeago to about Rs. 30 each now.

Vendors said that the fact that a number of drumshad remained unsold put a question mark on theirreturn next year.

This photo was taken on K. K. Salai, MGR Nagaron Jan. 16.

Sharp fall in sale of Bhogidrums

caved in, creating a foot-wide opening. It poses a danger to pedestrians, especially the elderly and

children, as there is a school nearby. Also it is invisible duringdark hours, posing an added risk.

I request the concerned authorities to close the opening toavoid any untoward incidents. – R. Venkateswaran, 10/292nd Cross Street, West CIT Nagar
