Michael J. Malik, Sr. Arrested on Domestic Abuse Charges; Will Serve Probation"Malik began hitting (the boy) with a wood hockey stick, in the back, sides and buttock," the boy told police. The boy "had obvious bruising and marks to his left side." The boy ran off. Malik chased the child into the street. He caught up to the boy, and both fell to the ground. Then Malik started hitting him, the report said. "Malik punched (the boy) at least two times in the face, causing his lips to bleed and bruising on the left side of his face, under the eye," the report said. "Malik then grabbed (the boy) by the back of the neck, pulling him by the head, back towards the house." "Malik was yelling at him the entire time to get back in the house and that they would be a happy family," the report said, citing the child's statement. When police arrived, Malik told the officers that "his stepson was causing problems," the report said. Malik was charged with domestic violence and assault and battery and spent 20 hours in jail before he was released on bond.

Scrutiny: Investor served probation; Domestic assaultcomplaint came from boy, 12.

Judy DeHavenThe Detroit News

HARPER WOODS -- Atwater/Circus Circus investor Mike Malik [Michael J. Malik,Sr.] was arrested in 1997 after he admitted hitting his girlfriend's 12-year-old son.

Malik served a year of probation, and the domestic violence charge was dismissed after he

fulfilled requirements ordered by 32nd District Court Judge Roger LaRose.

"This story was ridiculously exaggerated and hurtful to our entire family," Malik said in a

written statement to The News last week.

Michigan Gaming Control Board investigators are reviewing civil and criminal proceeding

involving all casino investors as part of an investigation to determine whether they have the

moral character and business deportment to hold a license.

Malik, who has since married the child's mother, owns 8.75 percent of the group.

Police based their report on statements made by the boy, his 10-year-old brother and aneighbor who witnessed the fracas and called police.

The fight began in the late hours of May 13, 1997, after Malik and girlfriend Michelle

Resseguie picked her three boys up from a baby-sitter's house. The couple had been drinking

wine at Andiamo's restaurant, the report said.

When the five got to Resseguie's home on Hawthorne, "Malik began hitting (the boy) with a

wood hockey stick, in the back, sides and buttock," the boy told police. The boy "had

obvious bruising and marks to his left side."

The boy ran off. Malik chased the child into the street. He caught up to the boy, and both fell

to the ground. Then Malik started hitting him, the report said.

"Malik punched (the boy) at least two times in the face, causing his lips to bleed and bruising

on the left side of his face, under the eye," the report said. "Malik then grabbed (the boy) by

the back of the neck, pulling him by the head, back towards the house."

"Malik was yelling at him the entire time to get back in the house and that they would be a

happy family," the report said, citing the child's statement.

When police arrived, Malik told the officers that "his stepson was causing problems," the

report said.

Malik was charged with domestic violence and assault and battery and spent 20 hours in jail

before he was released on bond. The assault and battery charge was later dropped.

During his year of probation, Judge LaRose ordered Malik and the boy to attend counseling

and ordered Malik to refrain from assaulting, harassing or threatening the child. The domestic

violence charge was dismissed in June 1998 after Malik fulfilled those conditions.
