We believe in a museum as a public meeting point. An environment in which art provides an context for connection, stimulates public debate and offers a focal point for reflection.

The MALI Contemporary Art Wing is therefor a piece of public space, a very special piece of public space.

As public space it is connected to the wider public space of the city of Lima. And as such, needs to adress urgent issues the city is facing today because of its baffling growth over the last decades. This growth has been so succesfull, the city has not be able to ‘keep up’ with this growth.

In our proposal we connect the design for the Contemporary Art Wing to a broader design ambition for Lima’s public space: for the streets and avenues of the city in general and to a more specific design proposal for the Parcs around MALI.

The design for the new Wing is a catalyst for generating a integrated proposal to adress a number of issues in and around the site. In our proposal the new metro station entrance is

connected to the entrance of the museum and an underpass connecting the two Parcs on either side of the Avenida 9 de Diciembre.

This sloping public connection is extended to form the entrance to the Contemporary Art Wing. Inside, the sloping public plaza gides the route to the galleries and education spaces. All programm except the cafe has been housed underneath the Parc.

The education spaces form the hart of the Contemporary Art Wing, reflecting the active role of education in bringing art to the city. The galleries are grouped around the eductation spaces, offering direct visual relationships, both for the students and the visitors. As much as the art, education is showed as maybe the most important piece of the MALI’s ‘collection’.

Because of its spatial layout, developed from a specific approach to Lima’s public space, the new Contemporary Art Wing offers a dynamic and exciting set of spatial relationships between the city and art. It catches public curiosity, and makes art an active part of Lima’s public life.

the programm is housed under the parc: we keep the park as much a green public space

a new connection underneath Avenue Decembre 9 connect Dammart park with the exposition park and teh subway station. A part of the park is folded open to make an entrance to the undergorund museum.

a minor part of th entrance is opened up further to give the new museum a modest ‘face’ to the city and the subway connection. Underneath this lifted park is a central entrance to the new wing, the Plaza and the Exposition Palace

the corner towards the plaza and the Park beyond is lifted up slightly. As such the main emphasis of the entrance is towards the park.

the network of public routes through the park is integrated and connected to the new museum wing.

Park, the new Wing and the subway station form an integrated and contiunuos public space, linking both Parcs, the Museum to the historic city center and creating a new Plaza between the Palace and the new entrance.

climate concept

The climatised cavity between retaining wall and galeries creates a buffer, minimising the need for climitisation of the galleries, education etc. Energy use is therefor minimal.

Any moisture from the soil is ‘captured’ and taken away through the ventilation of the cavity.

earthquake resistancy

The entire subterrainian volume is designed as a solid box, on all sides enclosed by te lose gravel-like soil.

Internal resistancy to earthquakes is created by fixed floor-column connections, absorbing energy while being (relatively) flexible.

Art challenges people to curiosity and reflection. Our proposal makes curiosity of the passer-by and room for reflection the essence of the spatial design. By composing views and folding the surface, this design links art and the city of Lima. Passers-by are tempted to look within the muse-um and to continue their walk in the park, to be curious about what can be found inside. While strolling through the park, people see the contem-porary art and museum interior from different perspectives.

longitudinal section

Our proposal offers an attractive scenery for exhibitions using different spaces and compositi-ons, each in a new relation to visitor and passerby. The new contemporary art wing represents the value of the MALI for Lima and gives it a leading position in the ongoing positive transformation to a sustainable civic space.

With the planned constrcution of the metro, car congestion will be reduced. At the same time, the metro requires a attractive, walkable public space to get to and from the metrostations.

We therefor propose a network of footpaths using the ‘overcapacity’ of car-lanes that will emerge. This space is given to pedestrain and cyclists.

To achieve a sustainable green appearance of trees providing shadow, we propose a simple moisture-based irrigation under the pavement, using the high humidity but lack of rainfall, speci-fic to the Lima climate.

Our proposal links the MALI, the metro station and Parque de la Exposicion in a fluid sequence of spaces. This sequence of spaces provides a main route that connects the site with the tech-nical University, Real plaza centro civico and the city-centre of Lima. It is part of a pleasant and green pedestrians zone linking Parque la Muralla, Jiron de la Union, Paseo de Los Heroes Navales, Parque de la Exposicion, El Campo de Marte and Circuito Magico del Agua.

By spreading extra trees all over the grass of Par-que de la Exposicion we create a green and shady domain for pick-nick, conversation and strolling.
