AT RISK?WHO IS
Malaria is a disease of the blood that is caused by the Plasmodium
parasite, which is transmitted from person to person by the female
Anopheles mosquito. Malaria is an entirely preventable and treatable
mosquito-borne illness but it continues to cause death.
People with little or no immunity to malaria, such as young
children and pregnant women or travellers coming from
areas with no malaria.
In high risk areas

SYMPTOMS OF MALARIA
Tu Youyou has been
studying on both
Western and Chinese
medicine. She treasures the wisdom
of the ancestors and discovered the
anti-malaria regimens- artemisinin
and dihydroartemisinin through
ancient Chinese manuscripts that was
the key to beating the disease. She
scoured the ancient texts to study the
best way to extract the compound for
use in medicine.
1960YEAR
was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her discovery of artemisinin, a drug based on traditional Chinese herbal medicine and that is now part of standard anti-malarial regimens.

Artemisininis extracted from Artemisia annua in traditional
Chinese medicine.
Artemisinin-based combination therapy drugs has
become a World Health Organisation (WHO)
recommended anti-malarial standard therapy. WHO
believes that artemisinin based combination
therapy is the most effective means of treating
malaria and the best drug resistance for malaria.

ARTEMISININ
how artemisinin
works onMALARIA
Artemisinin kills malaria parasites in the
human body rapidly. To avoid malaria
parasites from being immune to individual
drugs, artemisinin based combination therapy
(ACT) is used on today’s treatment on malaria.
In 2004, World Health Organisation
(WHO) listed such combination therapy
as the No.1 drug choice for treating ma-
laria, the cure rate went up to 97%.
Since the effect is significant, the use
therapy in malaria-endemic countries
increased from 11 million times in 2005
to nearly 400 million times in 2013.
