Potential hydrogeological contaminants derived from petroleum activities in the Albertine Graben

Mr. GUMA Brian Emmanuel studied the hydrogeological characteristics, hydrogeochemical evolution and potential contamination of ground-

water in the Albertine Graben. The study established the occurrence of groundwater into two aquifer environments, namely transmissive unconsolidated sediments below the escarpment in the Albertine Rift and deeply weathered Precambrian Crystalline Basement rocks of lower transmissivity above the escarp-ment. Highly transmissive sands in the Albertine Rift and the westward flow of groundwater towards Lake Albert provides potential regional flow paths for contaminants within aquifers. Multivariate statistical analyses attributed heavy metals (iron, mercury, cadmium, copper, zinc, and manganese) to anthropo-genic sources such as gas flaring, an activity linked to the footprint of petroleum exploration. Ingestion of water from areas with chemi-cal parameters (arsenic, lead, iron, and mercury) in exceedance of the drinking water guideline values for the WHO (2012) could pose a health concern to the population in the study area. This study was fund-ed by DAAD and was supervised by Dr. Michael Owor, Assoc. Prof. An-drew Muwanga, and Prof. Richard Graham Taylor.

NANTABA Florence (Ms)

Occurrence, eco-toxicological risk assessment, sorption and degradation kinetics of selected emerging organic chemical pollutants in water and sediments of Lake Victoria, Uganda

Ms. NANTABA Florence investi-gated the occurrence of emerging organic chemical pollutants in Lake Victoria and the potential envi-ronmental risk of their presence to aquatic organisms. Her study revealed that the lake system is contaminated with pharmaceutical drugs residues (mainly antibiotics), as well as personal care products, plasticizers and organophosphorus flame retardants. The residues have been found to pose a high eco-toxic risk to aquatic organisms in the lake although they have been predicted to have a relatively short residence time. This study was funded by the International Programme in Chemi-cal Sciences (IPICS) under the Inter-national Science Programme (ISP), Uppsala University, Sweden and the German Academic Exchange Ser-vice (DAAD), and supervised by Dr. John Wasswa of Makerere Univer-sity, Uganda and Prof. Henrik Kylin of Linköping University, Sweden.

YIGA Solomon

Synthesis, Catalysis and Nitrosyl Derivatives of Iron(II) Complexes Bearing Pentadentate Polypyridyl Ligands

Mr. YIGA Solomon researched on tuning iron based complexes with a focus of determining the factors that affect their catalytic potential in the oxidation of hydrocarbons. Hydro-carbons are the most abundant and inexpensive organic chemicals in petroleum but very difficult to con-vert to other useful chemical com-pounds. From the cost point of view, iron would be the metal of choice in catalysing the conversion of hy-drocarbons to other compounds but so far it has achieved very little success. He prepared and studied a number of new iron complexes and thereafter applied them in catalys-ing the oxidation of selected hydro-carbons. His work proved that iron complexes can ease the oxidation of hydrocarbons to alcohols and ke-tones. This is a promising milestone in the attempt to utilize unreac-tive hydrocarbons. This study was funded by Sida-Makerere Bilateral Research Programme and was su-pervised by Prof. Henry Ssekaalo and Prof. Ola F. Wendt.

Evaluation of novel breath-based biomarkers and other sputum and non-sputum based, biomarker-based tests for TB screening and diagnosis

Mr. ANDAMA ONUBIA Alfred evaluated the feasibility and per-formance of novel breath-based

biomarkers and other sputum and non-sputum based, biomarker-based tests for tuberculosis (TB) screening and diagnosis in two re-ferral hospitals and a health cen-ter IV in Kampala, Uganda. Index tests evaluated included two novel breath-based biomarkers, a proto-type urine LAM lateral flow (LAM-LFA) assay, oral swabs and the GeneXpert Ultra. We found that 1) Xpert Ultra performed similarly to Xpert MTB/RIF, 2) urine Xpert Ultra testing in HIV-positive individuals detected additional TB, particularly in those with advanced HIV disease, 3) urine LAM-LFA prototype per-formed similarly regardless of HIV-status, 4) TB patients harbor viable Mycobacteria and oral swabs may facilitate minimally invasive culture-based TB diagnostic testing, and 5) breath collection and processing for TB testing is safe, feasible and that a minimum 10L of breath is re-quired to detect breath-based bio-markers using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). This study was supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust through Global Good Fund and The Pulmonary Complications of AIDS Research Training (PART) Program (NIH-Fogarty D43TW009607), and supervised by Prof. Moses Joloba, Dr. William Worodria, Prof. Adithya Cattamanchi and Prof. Swomitra Mohanty.

pervision team that would ensure appropriate treatment of children under five years with Malaria, Pneu-monia and diarrhea since none exists (only an inspection team ex-ists). This follows a growing concern that more than 50% of caregivers with children less than five years in rural areas seek the first form of medical treatment for Malaria, Pneumonia and diarrhea- main childhood killers from drug shops which has been largely inappropri-ate. Secondly, with major health facilities being reserved for COVID patients, drug shops have become a major provider of health care. The study found that the peer-supervision intervention improved appropriate treatment of children with Malaria, Pneumonia and diar-rhea among drug shop operators. This study can be used to reduce morbidity and mortality due to the three childhood illnesses in children less than five years in Uganda. The study was funded by the Einhorn Family foundation and Uppsala Uni-versity; and supervised by Dr. Henry Wamani, Professor Stefan Peterson and Professor Andreas Martensson.

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection during pregnancy and influence on the pregnancy anemia intervention package in Uganda among mothers at Kawempe Health Centre

Ms. BAINGANA Rhona investigated the impact of Helicobacter pylori infection on the efficacy of the Na-tional Anemia Policy (2002) inter-vention package for anemia in preg-nancy. The prevalence of H. pylori infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in 5 districts in Uganda was unexpect-edly found to vary significantly from

18% in Apac to 60% at Kawempe Health Centre and was indepen-dently associated with urban resi-dence and with using unprotected water sources, calling for concerted efforts in environmental health. H. pylori infection was not associated with anemia and did not influence the response to the maternal ane-mia control package in pregnant women attending ANC at KHC. He-moglobin levels reduced significant-ly during pregnancy among those women with malaria parasites, and among those with inadequate iron stores. Over half of the moth-ers with anemia did not have iron deficiency, and infections/inflam-mation were of greater significance than iron deficiency in the aetiology of anaemia during the first trimester indicating that infection/inflamma-tion should be considered alongside iron deficiency and malaria in cur-rent strategies to address anaemia in pregnancy. The study was funded by Innovations@Makerere and Nu-tricia Research Foundation, and was supervised by Dr Lena Davidsson and Professor John Enyaru

BATAMULIZA Kaitesi Mukara

Prevalence of ear infections and care seeking practices in children under five in a district of Kigali city, Rwanda

Dr. KAITESI Batamuliza Mukava studied how common ear infec-tions are in children aged under five years in a district in Kigali. She also studied what parents know about ear infections and where they seek for treatment from when their chil-dren have ear infections. Kaitesi also studied how nurses at health centres treat ear infections. The study found that ear infections are very common among children in this community and are a big public

health problem. Ear infection pre-disposes children to hearing loss. Despite this, parents preferred to seek for care from informal settings such as traditional healers and only a few visit formal health centres. Nurses did not have a good under-standing about how to treat ear infections yet they are the most ac-cessible in primary health centres. Kaitesi therefore recommends rais-ing awareness in the community re-garding ear infections and their con-sequences; conducting training for nurses in health centres; engaging community health workers and tra-ditional healers to identify and refer children with suspected ear infec-tions. Throughout her work, Kaitesi engaged with the Ministry of Health and partners, which contributed to Rwanda developing a National ear and Hearing care policy. This study was funded by the Consortium of Advanced Research and Training in Africa and was supervised by Prof. Peter Waiswa of Makerere Univer-sity, Prof. Debarra Lyn Tucci of Duke University and Prof. Richard Lilford of University of Birmingham.

Pregnancy Planning and Utilization of Maternal Health Services by Female Sex Workers in Uganda

Dr. NNAKATE BUKENYA Justine as-sessed pregnancy planning and uti-lization of maternal health services (MHS) among female sex workers (FSWs) in Uganda. The London Measure of Unintended Pregnancy (LMUP) tool was validated and used to measure pregnancy planning. She found the LMUP tool was accept-able to measure pregnancy plan-ning and only 11.0% (90/819) FSWs had planned pregnancies. Failure to plan for pregnancies was driven by rape, and substance abuse amidst

modest use of dual contracep-tives. Utilization of MHS was low at 25.2% (80/318) and negatively as-sociated with low pregnancy plan-ning, stigma, and discrimination. She recommends use of LMUP to measure pregnancy planning, in ad-dition to designing interventions to promote the use of MHS including dual contraceptive use among FSWs in Uganda. Importantly, adequate MHS should be provided to all women in non–discriminatory man-ner. This study was funded by The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), and su-pervised by Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze, Prof. David Guwatudde, and Associ-ate Prof. Stella Neema.

Effect of community Health worker compared to mother led positive deviance hearth approach on recovery of moderately malnourished children under five years in Kirundo and Karusi provinces in Burundi

Chantal studied what are the effect of positive deviance Hearth (PD-H) approaches through Community health works (CHW) versus Moth-ers PD-H led on nutrition status of moderately malnourished under five (MMU5) children, and on care-giver’s knowledge, practice and key health and nutrition behavior in Bu-rundi .She also underlined that Bu-rundi needs great attention because more than a half of children <5 y of age are stunted, the highest in the world. In Burundi, only 4.6 % of the health facilities services treated MMU5. The study found that recov-ery or discharge when cured was significantly higher in the CHW compared to mother led PD-H.

Chantal therefore recommended training and coaching/supervision

for the CHW for the improvement of management of MMU5 at the com-munity level. Throughout her work, Chantal engaged with the Ministry of Health, which contributed to Bu-rundi on policy shifting. This study was funded by UNICEF and was supervised by Dr Henry Wamani of Makerere University, Prof. Freder-ick Edward Makumbi; Dr Gakenia Wamuyu; Dr Juliet Kiguli.

Molecular Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Resistance at A Human-Animal Interface in Pastoralist Community of Kasese District, Uganda

Mr. IRAMIOT Jacob Stanley studied the molecular epidemiology of an-timicrobial resistance at a human-animal interface in pastoralist com-munity of Kasese district. He found that the prevalence of multi-drug resistance among bacteria isolated from both humans and animals was high. He also found that consump-tion of lakeshore water and carriage of multi-drug resistant bacteria in cattle were associated with carriage of multi-drug resistant bacteria in the human population which sug-gests a possibility of transmission of multi-drug resistant bacteria between humans and animals. This knowledge will aid in developing a more robust national antibiotic stewardship program which is en-shrined in a one-health approach. The study was supported by the DELTAS Africa Initiative [grant# 107743/Z/15/Z]. The DELTAS Afri-ca Initiative is an independent fund-ing scheme of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS)’s Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) and supported by the New Partnership for Africa’s De-velopment Planning and Coordinat-

ing Agency (NEPAD Agency) with funding from the Wellcome Trust [grant #107743/Z/15/Z] and the UK government and supervised by Prof. Benon B. Asiimwe, Dr. Henry Kajumbula and Prof. Joel Bazira.

Severe anemia in Ugandan children under 5 years: Implementation research on its prevalence, management and outcomes.

Dr. OPIKA OPOKA Robert inves-tigated the clinical care provided as well as the inpatient and outpa-tient outcomes of children present-ing with severe anemia in Ugandan Health Units.

He found that severe anemia is a commonly assigned diagnosis but clinical guidelines were not al-ways followed in the management of these children. Implementation of quality improvement interven-tions significantly improved clini-cal care and reduced the risk of inpatient death by about 70%. Post-discharge, nearly half of children treated for severe anemia required readmission while one in 12 died during this period. In order to re-duce the high mortality in children with severe anemia, there is urgent need to support health workers to adhere to clinical guidelines and to implement post-discharge care in children treated for severe anemia. The study was funded by a D43 Fog-arty International Centre grant and supervised by Prof Charles Kara-magi, Prof James Tumwine and Prof Chandy John.

Helminths and metabolic outcomes in rural and urban Uganda.

Dr. SANYA Richard Edwin investi-gated the impact of helminth (para-sitic worm) infections on metabolic health in rural island communities in Lake Victoria and urban com-munities in Entebbe municipality, Uganda. People with helminth infec-tions may be at lower risk of devel-oping conditions such as diabetes and heart disease due to the effects that helminth infections have on the body’s immune system. He found that levels of LDL-cholesterol, a bad lipid, were modestly higher in people living in villages intensively treated for helminths. Compared with the uninfected, people with schistoso-miasis and Strongyloides infection had lower levels of LDL-cholesterol. Also, compared with rural commu-nities, urban communities had lower insulin resistance and glucose levels but higher blood pressure. How-ever, these rural-urban differences were not explained by current hel-minth infection. Helminth infections may have some metabolic benefits such as induction of a favourable lipid profile in humans. It is impor-tant to understand the underlying mechanisms with a view to using this knowledge to develop new ap-proaches to manage metabolic diseases. This study was funded by Makerere University/ Uganda Virus Research Institute Centre of Excel-lence for Infection and Immunity Research (MUII-plus) and super-vised by Prof. Alison Elliott, Dr Irene Andia Biraro and Dr. Emily Webb.

TUKWASIBWE Stephen

Role of Killer-cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptors and Human Leukocyte Antigens in Transmission and Severity of Malaria in Uganda.

Mr. TUKWASIBWE Stephen investi-gated whether genetic variations in two highly variable immune system genes in the human genome, that is killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and their human leu-kocyte antigen-C (HLA-C) ligands differ within Ugandan populations with historically varied malaria transmission intensities, and the association of KIR and their HLA-C ligands with malaria severity in Uganda. These studies involved use of new comprehensive high-throughput genotyping approaches. From this study, Stephen designed a high-throughput HLA-C genotyp-ing method, which will be useful in disease association studies in-volving large cohorts. He has also demonstrated that, KIR-AA and HLA-C2C2 genotypes are protective from severe malaria. This is likely to explain the increased burden of pre-eclampsia in our population, which is increased in mothers with KIR-AA haplotypes carrying an HLA-C2C2 foetus. The study was funded by the Makerere University-Uganda Virus Research Institute Centre of Excel-lence for Infection and Immunity Re-search and Training (MUII) through the DELTAS Africa Initiative (Grant no. 107743), and was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Annettee Nakimuli, Dr Stephen Cose, Dr Francesco Coluc-ci, and Prof. Philip Rosenthal.
