InNovember2012,ExpressHealthcarereviewedMumbaishospitalsectorandfoundthattheindustrywhichwasonceameccaforallkindsofmedicalaidhadsuddenlyreachedaplateau.Reasonsforthestagnationbeingincreasingrealestatesprices,disproportionatedistributionofhealthcareserviceswithinthecityandlackofmanpowertotacklesepidemicsanddisasters.Atthatjuncture,thesectorneededarenaissance.Nevertheless,Mumbaiisacitythatpossessesthevalourtobreakallthepossiblejinxesandproveitsneversaydieattitude.Thecityshealthcaresectorhasalreadystartedtakingconfidentstrikestowardsrevivingitslostglory.

Thefirstmove

ThehospitalsectorinMumbaiismainlydominatedbymultispecialityinstitutesbuiltduringpreandpostindependence.MostofthesecentresofexcellencearerunbytheBrihanmumbaiMunicipalCorporation(BMC)orvarioustrustsandarestructuresthathavestoodformorethan50years.However,ithasbeennotedthatthesehospitalsaresoonreachingadilapidatedstateandtechnologiesusedinthesehospitalsareveryoldandneedtobechangedorreplaced.Hence,thefirststeptousherrenaissancewastorestoreandrevampthesestructureswhicharethebackboneofthehealthcaresectorinMumbai.Earlier,intheyear2010,theBMChadannouncedthesanctionofaroundRs750croresforrevampingcivilrunhospitals.However,theactualprocessstartedonlyin2012.

TheKEMeffect

ThefirsthospitaltostartoffthistrendwastheKingEdwardMemorial(KEM)Hospital.The82yearoldheritagestructurebuiltoutofstonesandteakwoodhasbeenassociatedwiththehistoryofmodernmedicineinIndia.ThehospitalisaGradeIIheritagestructureandisspreadacrossapproximately5,23,400sqft,comprisingtwobuildings.AsumofRs120croreswasallottedtowardstheentirerestorationprojectandthecontractwasawardedtotheNeevGroup,awellknownconstructionandarchitecturecompany.ExpressHealthcarehadalsocoveredhowthehistoricKEMHospitalwassupposedtoreceiveitsnewavtaar.

ThethenCOO,MayankMadhani,NeevGrouphadexplainedhowrestoringaheritagestructurewasachallengingtask,especiallyiftherestorationworkhadtobeconductedwhilethehospitalisfullyfunctional.HehadinformedthatwhenNeevbeganrestoringthehospital,KEMsbuildinghousedaround2000bedswithabout390staff,physiciansand550residentdoctors,andabout1.8millionoutpatientsand85,000inpatientsvisitingthehospitalonanannualbasis.Herethe

challengewastomanagethefunctioningofthehospitalwithoutdisturbingpatients,visitorsandwholestaffaswellascarryouttherevampwhilemaintainingtheessenceoftheheritagestructure.Inconsequencetothis,thewholeprojectwasdividedinsixphases.Eachofthephasehadaspecificamountsanctionedtocarryouttherevamp.Therestorationincludedincreasingthestrengthofthestructureandaugmentingcapacityofresourceslikewatersupply,andreplacingtheMedicalGasPipelineSystem.TherevampincludedupgradingvariouswardsandOTs,introducingnewinfrastructureforwastemanagementetcandcontrollingHAIs.Also,wheretheinteriorsareconcerned,everywardhasbeenrevampedwithbetterflooring,plasteringandtiling,paintingaswellasnewbedsandpatientservicefurniturehavebeenincorporated.Apartfromthis,thehospitalalsoinstalledGRCdomesinsteadoftheconventionaldomes.GRCdomesarelighterinweight,donotcorrodeandhavesubstantiallife.Thisrevampcertainlygaveanewleaseoflifetothousandsofpatientswhocommutetothehospital.Manydepartmentswhichwerenotfunctionalopenedtheirdoorstothepatientsincreasingthecapacityofthehospital.ThislandmarkstepurgedthegovernmenttoturntowardshospitallikeBhagwatiHospital,CooperHospital,NairHospital,LokmanyaTilakHospital,Sionetc.

Thisrevampincludedincreasingcapacitiesofthehospitalsandalsoupgradingthemwithnewertechnologies.Apartfromthis,theCorporationalsointroducedanewmedicalcollegeattachedtotheCooperHospitalthatspreadsoverthreeacres,andwillhouseadditional150MBBSseats.BMChasalsoappliedforessentialapprovalsfromMedicalCouncilofIndia(MCI),NewDelhi,toexpeditetheprocess.DrSuhasiniNagda,Director,MajorHospitalsinapressmeetthathappenedthisAugusthadsaidthattheywouldapplyfortheapprovalbyAugust31,2014.TheMCIteamwouldeventuallycometoinspectthefacilities.

ThemedicalcollegewillbeginfunctioningwithfirstyearMBBScourses,commencingfromJune2015.Coursesinanatomy,biochemistry,physiologyandpreventivesocialmedicinewillbeoffered,startingnextyear.Thehospitalwillcommenceinterviewsforhiringteachingandnonteachingstaffforthemedicalcollegefromnextyear,Januaryonwards.

ThemedicalcollegeinCooperHospitalwillbethefirstsuchinstitutionintheWesternsuburbs.Currently,therearethreefunctionalmedicalcollegesrunbytheBMCTopiwalaMedicalNationalCollegerunalongwithNairHospitalinMumbaiCentral,SethGordhandasSunderdasMedicalCollegerunalongwithKEMHospitalinParelandLokmanyaTilakMedicalCollegerunalongwithLokmanyaTilakMunicipalGeneralHospitalinSion.

TheCorporationtookthefirststep,andtheprivatesectorfollowedsuit.Revampandrestorationwithintheprivatesectortookadifferentform.MostoftheprivatehospitalsinMumbaiareupgradingvariousdepartmentswithinthehospitalsetuptoprovidebetterservices.Ontheotherhand,hospitalslikethereareSirHurkisondasNurrotumdasHospitalandResearchCentreandDrBalabhaiNanavatiHospitalandResearchCentreweretakenoverbyorganisationslikeRelianceFoundationandRadiantLifeCarewhocompletelytransformedthesehospitalsintocentresofexcellence.

SirHurkisondasNurrotumdasHospitalandResearchCentre,nowchristenedasSirHNRelianceFoundationHospitalandResearchCentreisa19storeybuildgingwitharound345beds.Theearlierstructurewasbuiltin1925,andthehospitalisoneofMumbaispremiumhospitals.IthaswitnessedthefreedomstruggleandtheSecondWorldWar.OneofitsmostfrequentvisitorsthenwasMahatmaGandhi.ThehospitalcelebrateditsSilverJubileewithSardarVallabhbhaiPatelasitsChiefGuestandtheGoldenJubileecelebrationswasgracedbyLokNayakJayaprakashNarayan.However,inthelasteightyearsthehospitalwasbattlingwithfinancialinstabilityandsoReliancefoundationacquiredittorebuiltitsglory.Reliancebeganthehospitalrestorationprojectwithavisiontomakethehospitalofthefuture.

ThishospitalhascollaborationwithJohnHopkins,MDAndersonCancerCentre,MassachusettsGeneralHospitalandUniversityofSouthernCaliforniaandiscurrentlyamultispecialitytertiarycarehospitalwithsixthrustareas:cardiacsciences,nephrourology,neurosciences,oncology,orthopaedicsandspine,andwoman&childhealth.Thehospitalalsohasamedicalmallwithprogressivediagnosticservices,includinglaboratories,radiologyandimaging,andnuclearmedicine.

Thenewlyrestoredheritagebuildingcaneasilybemistakenasthefrontofahotel.Theheritagewingofthehospitalwhichisconnectedtothenewtowerbyaskybridgehasanantiqueelevatorexcavatedfromthegodownandreinstated.ItremindsyouofthebygoneVictorianerathattheBritishersbroughttoIndia.Well,whileReliancehasmaintainedtheoldworldcharmoftheheritagebuilding,ithasalsofullydigitisedthehospital.Ithasasuiteofoperationroomsoneveryfloor,someequippedwithroboticarmsformicroscopicsurgeries,andcuttingedgehybridcathlab(amachinethatdoesadvancedimagingandallowsdoctorstoperforminterventionalsurgeriesatthesametime.ThehospitalhasadoptedtechnologyinabigwaywithcolourcodedfloorsandrestrictedpassagewayscoveredbyRFIDtagsforequipmentmanagement.

Whatsmoreinterestingisthat,thecharitablewingofthehospital,whereunderprivilegedpatientswillbetreatedalsohavethesamesetupandtechnologyasintheexecutivesuiteofthehospital.Additionally,thehospitalhasanoutreachprogrammethatcurrentlycoversover310,000individualsinthevicinity,providingpreventiveandprimaryhealthcareonadigitalplatformvirtuallyfreeofcosts.

Also,ithasinitiatedstepstoadoptthenearbycongestedareasaspartofPrimeMinisterscallofSwachchBharatAbhiyan.TomakethehospitalthegreenesthealthcarefacilityinIndia,Reliancehasadoptedmethodslikewaterrecyclingandrainwaterharvesting.

JustasRelianceacquiredSirHNHospitalandtransformeditintoahealthcarecentre,RadiantLifeCare,promotedbyformerinvestmentbankerAbhaySoihasacquiredDrBalabhaiNanavatiHospitalthroughanoperationsandmanagement(O&M)allianceandhasremodelledthehospitaltomakeitintoapreferredhealthcaredestinationforMumbai.ThehospitalisnownamedasNanavatiSuperspecialityHospital.

NanavatiHospitalhasalegacyofservicetothepeopleofMaharashtra.Thehospitalhasbeenawitnesstothecityseffortindevelopinghealthcareservices.Afterexperiencinganorthwardinclineformanyyears,thehospitalwasfacedwithhighoperatingcosts,financialcrunchandinabilitytocompetewithotherprivatesectorplayers,NanavatiHospital,thereforedecidedtooptforarevamp.ThisJuly,thehospitalenteredintoanO&MalliancewithRadiantLifeCare.TheNanavatiTrustsaysthatthebrandNanavatiwillremainintact.

Asperthealliance,RadiantLifeCarewillhelpstreamlineoperationsofthehospitalbybringinginglobalpracticesandintroducingawiderangeofmedicalservices.ThenewdesignofthehospitalisinlinewithDelhisBLKHospitalwhichisalsotransformedandmanagedbyRadiantLifeCare.Therevamphasalreadybegan.Asperthealliance,Radiantislookingtoalmosttreblethecapacityto900bedsatacostofoverRs350croresandupgradethe64yearoldfacility,inauguratedbythefirstPMJawaharlalNehru.Themoneywillbeusedtoadd600morebedstotheexisting350oddbeds.Agoodportionofthecapexwillbespenttoaddmoresuperspecialitywingsaswellastoinstallstateofthearttechnology

Thenewmanagementwishestotransformthishospitalintoahighendquaternarycareinstitutewithworldclasstreatmentfacilitiestoprovidehealthcaresolutions,likethetheMayoClinicintheUS.

Speakingaboutthevisionandplanforthehospital,Soi,says,Thehospitalhasaverystronglegacyofmorethan50years.Secondly,itisaniconicpartofMumbaislandscapeandthethirdimportantaspectistheacademics.SoitisinherentindevelopingMumbaishealthcarefabricofservingthepeopleofMumbaiandNorthIndia.Althoughitisnotaheritagebuilding,theartdcorofthehospitaldoesremindusofMumbaisoldstructuresthatyouwillfindaroundtheMarineDrive.Sowedecidedtoretaintheoldcharisma,builduponthelegacyandwidentheambitofhealthcareservices.SoourvisionforthehospitalisthatinayearortwowewantNanavatiSuperspecialityhospitaltobethehospitalofchoiceforMumbai.Thereafter,wealsohavea5001000sqfeetofFAR,tobuildanewbuildingwherewewillincorporatethe500newbeds.ThehospitalisalsoadjacenttotheMumbaiairportandJuhuairport,soweintendtocatertotherestofthestate.WealsointendtobuildanotherIPDwinginthecurrentpremiseswhilemaintainingthecurrentdcorofthehospital.
