Avionics 2020New generation of cockpit avionics for helicopters

MAKE YOUR MISSION EASIER AND SAFER Crew-centric Mission-minded Customizable

ÈMISSION-MINDEDModern helicopter cockpits need to integrate ever more complex and diverse onboard functions according to each mission profile. Additional burdens are placed on pilots who are expected to perform more tasks. As a result, the helicopter cockpit will need to quickly adapt to mission types, flight rules and crew configurations, and to generally be a more flexible and versatile instrument.

Avionics 2020 offers both operators and pilots new ways to more efficiently manage their missions. It integrates new functionalities dedicated to manage the helicopter flight parameters allowing the crew to focus on its mission such as Search And Rescue (SAR), Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Offshore. In addition, the solution has been developed to be integrated to the connected aircraft environment. It comprises all modes of communications with Air Traffic Management and can also securely link avionics systems with operation centers, other service providers and the open world making the cockpit more mission-oriented and flexible.

Adaptable to any type of helicopter mission: SAR, EMS, Offshore…

providers and Open World Designed for Sesar and NextGen

CREW-CENTRIC - MISSION

PILOTSReduce training and workloadImprove situational awareness

Avionics 2020 is a disruptive generation cockpit avionics suite for an entry into service in 2020, with a scalable implementation approach. Based on the Thales product line strategy, it is perfectly suited to the needs of civil and governmental helicopters to fulfill a wide range of missions. It

draws on synergy with aircraft market segments. Designed to meet the needs of pilots, operators and airframers, Avionics 2020 is founded on three main principles: a crew-centric design, a comprehensive set of mission-minded functions and a customizable solution.

È CREW-CENTRICThe growing range of helicopter applications and the development of rotorcraft operational capabilities are driving complexity in cockpit systems. Current cockpit architecture is fast reaching the limit of the amount of information that can be efficiently operated by pilots.

Avionics 2020 is founded on the principles of natural and direct hands-on interaction with task-oriented human-machine interfaces to ease flight crew operations. It integrates a large secure display area including multi-touchscreen capabilities and offering pilots an intuitive solution. This design merges data from different systems and displays the information needed when it is needed in a way which mirrors how the human brain works and reaches decisions. Avionics 2020 also integrates head worn display solutions for piloting and managing the mission, pilot keeping eyes-out.

Its leading crew-centric design offers pilots efficient help to reduce training, optimize workload and increase situational awareness. Thus, it improves flight safety dramatically.

È CUSTOMIZABLEBased on the latest Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) concepts which are certified for numerous in-service aircraft types, Avionics 2020 is a new proposition to more traditional avionics systems for helicopters. The IMA solution hosts multiple third-party applications. Process and tools which support the overall certifiability of the avionics solution are part of a unique Incremental Certification package developed and patented by Thales. The IMA architecture reduces the number of equipment items required in a conventional shipset, generating significant savings in weight, volume and power consumption, and optimising acquisition and maintenance costs.

Based on its open architecture around a common family concept, the Avionics 2020 Human-Machine Interface, like the rest of its avionics, can be both connected to core functions provided by third-parties suppliers and customized to form an integral part of a customer-defined cockpit concept. This customization can be done either by Thales or by the customer should they wish to retain control of their properties and have autonomy in the control of the development and evolution of the solution. From a single mission display up to the complete suite embedding an open and modular computing platform, Avionics 2020 will offer a full range of solutions to cope with all types of aircraft for both linefit and retrofit.

Worldwide support for operators

With 1,000 avionics technicians working at three major hubs and 24/7 support and repair centres, Thales currently serves 800 operators and airlines throughout the world.

Our equipment maintenance services are commended by airlines all over the world, and aircraft manufacturers consistently rank Thales among their best-performing partners.

EFFICIENT PROGRAMME AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Working with aircraft manufacturers from the start of each programme, Thales provides advanced simulation tools and resources to validate operational concepts and tailor the avionics suite to the aircraft. With this approach, we can meet our commitments in terms of delivery deadlines and guarantee that our avionics solutions achieve the required level of maturity ahead of the aircraft’s first flight.

Maturity at first flight is a key objective. Manufacturing development is planned as soon as the first prototypes are produced. Throughout the programme, Thales keeps pace with aircraft production rates, implementing flexible supply chain management solutions that are recognised by the industry for outstanding quality assurance and on-time delivery performance.
