Here come the Millennials— is your portfolio ready?By Stuart C. McLeod and Camille Valentine

As prosperity broke out fol-lowing World War II, more ba-bies than ever were born in the United States. From 1946 to 1964, the “Baby Boomers” grew to some 76 million strong and eventually laid claim to the cre-ation of the “consumer society.” Today, 10,000 boomers retire every day and continue to influ-ence trends from healthcare to housing. But there’s a new kid in town and investors should pay attention.1

Those 88 million new kids are the Millennials. Also known as Generation Y, these young people are the demographic cohort born between 1980–1999. By 2025, they will com-prise more than 25 percent of the population.2

As a group, Millennials are the most highly educated citizens in U.S. history and keenly aware of social and environmental chal-lenges globally. They are also

tech-savvy consumers, utilizing social media to compare prod-ucts, prices and reviews online.

As investors they are skeptical of stability in the housing, job and financial markets. In a recent survey by Accenture, 43 percent of Millennial respondents (ages 21–30) described themselves as “conservative” investors, ver-sus 31 percent of Baby Boomer respondents (ages 46–70)!3

As advisors, we might em-phasize that Millenials will likely have the longest life ex-pectancy in history and there-fore need substantial assets to support a long retirement.

While they are admirably saving early, their savings are often allocated largely to cash, which is “safe,” but with inter-est rates near zero, returns are low. These young investors have the least to fear from market vol-atility, given the multiple mar-ket cycles they will experience.

Indeed, they potentially have the most to gain from investing for long-term growth.

On the other side of the equa-tion, companies catering to Millenial needs, wants and val-ues present major investment opportunities. Indeed, being aware of the significant influ-ence Millennials have will be increasingly important from an investment perspective.

Millennial spending is ex-pected to grow from $600 bil-lion in 2013 to $1.4 trillion annually by 2020.4 So, whether they deal in innovative tech-nologies, from social media to on-demand entertainment, or wellness products, from or-ganic foods to athletic apparel, or e-ecommerce, companies that capitalize on Millennial-driven investment themes have the potential to thrive in com-ing years. Is your investment port folio prepared?
