May 1st is the official kick off for football at Majura, but many

Coaches like to get going early with their teams.

There are some other options if your team is unable to train or

you just want more football. (And of course you can always

practice on your own and it’s free! Go to page 3 for top tips for

individuals.)

Majura FC hope to offer a pre-season Coerver Coaching Skills

to be in the Afters program to do this at Ainslie.

Coaching Corner

Former Wallaby, Brumbies player and Majura Parent, Marco

Caputo is currently training the Brumbies Academy players

aged 17+.

“We (Brumbies)can take a good athlete at 17 and develop them

into a Rugby player. AFL, and League can do the same.”

Marco, could we do that with a 17 year old athlete for football

(soccer)?

“No chance, football is a very technical game and you couldn’t

get the athletes up to the standard required.”

Good coaching is critical to all our players’ enjoyment and

development no matter what level of football they aspire to.

Coaching Courses and advice at Majura.

Majura has a number of Youth, Junior and Grassroots trained

Coaches. Need help? Email [email protected] and

I’ll get someone who can offer some expert advice/program for

any age group.

Grassroots Coaching Courses are free.

All junior and youth coaching licences are offered by Capital

Football.

Individual Player Practice.

The season’s coming. It’s time to get the feet singing and the

ball moving.

1.Use a tennis ball inside your house. Walk the ball around the

house wherever you go.

2.Bang a ball up against a wall. Both feet. Always use your

instep for this exercise. At home, at school wherever you can.

3.Practice your juggling and shooting.

4. Get the cones out and dribble in and out, alternating with

each foot and then both together.

5. Got a friend? Play 1 v 1 with small goals and a very small

pitch.

Football Tip

Tackling is the last

thing you should think

about when defending.

Stay on your feet, and

make the player with

the ball try to beat you.

The player may make a

mistake.

Food for thought: From the Pulpit!

FFA: Australian Football Development Curriculum.

Is your keeper still kicking or throwing long in football or

futsal?

It’s hard to get your keeper to throw or roll the ball to his/her

full back, particularly if you want to win or your team is under

the pump!

But research shows in football when the ball is kicked long it

results in a 50/50 challenge 95% of the time. Yes, you might

score, even win but your team will never improve!

A ball played to a full back is received by the player. The player

has to learn to touch it, control it and with the help of team

mates solve the problem of how the team keeps the ball.

Of course there is more to improving your players and team

but this simple crucial playing style sets the whole tone for

player skill development in Australia at the moment.

Your team not playing this way? Why not discuss it with your

team mates or Coach.

Don’t believe the Pulpit? Seeing is believing?

KOFI DANNING

“I remember my first game. (At Majura

Aged 7) I just came along to watch. I had no

boots, and just some track pants. But I was

allowed to play and I scored a goal. The

Coach asked me to come and play again, so

that was good.

Girls Football is booming

If you are coaching a girls team this year please take a moment

to look at the FIFA research and injury prevention strategies

for our female players.

1. Here’s the facts and the prevention strategies for our girls.

And (older)girls why not inform your coach, or better still take

the drills for the coach!

2 Injury prevention in female footballers pages 29-35 are

probably the shortcut. While well worth a read, basically each

training session should include some of the strength building

exercises.

Trials and Registration Day:

Overheard during a Majura trial.

Two players stood in defence. Neither moving, mostly

chatting.

The ball raced towards them. Now they were focused.

“This one’s mine,” said player 1. “I know exactly what I’m

going to do. I’m going to boot it.”

Player 1 seized the moment. Player 1 moved from their spot

towards the ball and gave it an almighty whack and sent the

ball back down the pitch from whence it came.

“That was awesome, you’re good at that,” said player 2.

“I know, I do it all the time.”

Majura Rego Day: Australia 3 Canberra United 2

While most people were in a queue on rego day, volunteers put

in countless hours helping getting everyone signed up, some

adults (me)had time to play with the kids! Ssshh don’t tell

Rhonda.

I teamed up with Gail McNamara and her two sons, Kai and

Shae. They can run, they can play. I might be old but I’m not

stupid. We represented Australia.

On the other team, representing Canberra United were

Ashleigh and Nicole Sykes. Officially clocked as the two fastest

Australians over 20 metres in Australian football. (I shortened

the pitch immediately.) And Eilis Fitt and Grace Fieg joined

Lachlain Hogg which looked to me like a pacy unit.

Inspired by her mum’s performance, Mia Thornton quickly

joined in. Unfortunately she chose to go up on Gail’s shoulders

for the whole game. Now Mia is only 3 but it still slowed our

team a tad.

With very small goals in operation it was always going to be

crucial to score early, and we did. Shae Thornton popped a

couple in. Albeit one when Ashleigh Sykes was called away to

sign photos. (Yes all part of our plan!)

Upon return Ash or maybe Nic scored after some good

interchange with Grace and Eilis. Lachlain then struck to make

it 2-2.

But with the older team tiring we managed one last attack.

Yes even at 47 I can still score a goal. Australia won 3-2 and

one old man went to bed happy that night……dreaming of what

might have been!

And remember you’re only as good as your last game!
