FOREWORD

The Major Vegetables and Rootcrops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on production of major vegetables and rootcrops, namely, mung bean/mongo, peanut, cabbage, eggplant, tomato, garlic, onion, sweet potato, and cassava. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture that the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) releases quarterly. This 3rd quarter 2017 issue of the Bulletin presents the preliminary estimates of production for July-September 2017 and the final estimates for April-June 2017. It also contains the January-June 2017 final estimates on area planted/harvested. The main source of data is the quarterly Crops Production Survey (CrPS) of the PSA.

TECHNICAL NOTES Production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. For other crops, area planted refers to the actual physical area planted while area harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests are realized. Estimates of production and area planted/harvested are generated from the Quarterly Crops Production Survey (CrPS) of which there are four survey rounds in a year, that is, February, May, August, and November.

FIGURE 2 Distribution of Mung bean/Mongo Production by Region, July-September: 2017p

Mung bean/Mongo

• For the third quarter of 2017, production of mung bean reached 1.50 thousand

metric tons which was 4.1 percent higher than the 1.44 thousand metric tons level in the same quarter of 2016.

• The increment could be attributed to additional area planted in Cagayan Valley due to availability of rehabilitation seeds from the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office No. 02 (DA-RFO 02) and in Agusan del Sur due to increasing local demand.

• Cagayan Valley was the top producer with 0.67 thousand metric ton contributing

45.1 percent to the country’s total output. Davao Region ranked second with 10.6 percent followed by Caraga with 7.4 percent (Figure 2).

FIGURE 4 Distribution of Peanut Production by Region, July-September: 2017p

Peanut

• During the July-September 2017 period, production of peanut grew by 1.4 percent,

from 3.65 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of the previous year to 3.71 thousand metric tons this year. This was brought about by the following:

o increased area planted in Agusan del Sur and Aurora due to high local demand; and

o more and bigger nuts developed in La Union due to lesser occurrence of rains during pod formation.

• Ilocos Region, the lead producer with 0.46 thousand metric ton shared

12.5 percent to the total production this quarter. This was followed by Northern Mindanao with 12.4 percent and Cagayan Valley with 12.2 percent (Figure 4).

FIGURE 6 Distribution of Cabbage Production by Region, July-September: 2017p

Cabbage

• For July-September 2017, cabbage production decreased by 5.0 percent,

from 18.01 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2016 to 17.10 thousand metric tons this year. The drop in output could be traced to the following:

o shifting to white/Irish potato, radish and cutflowers production (chrysanthemum and alstro) in Benguet and bell pepper in Mountain Province due to favorable price; and

o decreased yield in Mountain Province due to clubroot disease caused by excessive rains.

• Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) continued to be the largest cabbage producer with 11.35 thousand metric tons representing 66.3 percent of the country’s total output. This was followed by Central Visayas with 12.4 percent and Northern Mindanao with 10.7 percent (Figure 6).

FIGURE 8 Distribution of Eggplant Production by Region, July-September: 2017p

Eggplant

• The 2017 third quarter production of eggplant dropped by 4.9 percent, from 41.06

thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2016 to 39.06 thousand metric tons this year. Among the factors that caused the decline were the following:

o decreased yield in Quezon due to effect of Typhoon “Maring” in September 2017 and in Nueva Ecija due to occurrence of frequent rains during flowering. Drop in yield was also effected by the incidence of stem and fruit borer in Quezon and Nueva Ecija; and

o shifting of some areas to tomato production in Quezon due to higher price office by traders.

• CALABARZON topped all the eggplant producing regions with 13.08 thousand

metric tons contributing 33.5 percent to the national total. Cagayan Valley came next with 11.7 percent and Western Visayas with 8.8 percent (Figure 8).

Tomato

• For July-September 2017 period, production of tomato at 27.22 thousand metric

tons was 2.7 percent higher than the same quarter of 2016 at 26.50 thousand metric tons.

• The growth in output was attributed to the additional plantings in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental as more farmers were encouraged to plant due to high demand from Visayas and Metro Manila markets. Area planted also increased in Misamis Oriental due to seed support from the Local Government Units (LGUs).

• Northern Mindanao recorded the largest production at 19.30 thousand metric tons

sharing 70.9 percent to the country’s total tomato output. The other major producing regions were SOCCSKSARGEN with 6.3 percent share and Central Visayas with 3.8 percent (Figure 10).

Bermuda Onion (Red Creole and Yellow Granex)

• For the third quarter of 2017, production of bermuda onion decreased

by 34.4 percent, from 18.95 metric tons in the same quarter of 2016 to 12.43 metric tons this year.

• The negative output was the result of lesser area planted in Nueva Vizcaya due to frequent rains during planting time.

• Cagayan Valley produced 10.53 metric tons of bermuda onion and accounted for

84.7 percent of the total production this quarter (Figure 12).

Native Onion

• For July-September 2017, production of native onion was recorded at 17.40 metric tons, down by 9.9 percent from the same quarter of the previous year’s 19.31 metric tons.

• The decline in output was attributed to lesser area planted in South Cotabato due to frequent rains during planting time.

• Ilocos Region, the major producer with 9.35 metric tons contributed 53.7 percent

to the total native onion production this quarter. This was followed by SOCCSKSARGEN with 28.6 percent share and Cagayan Valley with 14.0 percent (Figure 14).

Sweet Potato

• During the July-September 2017 period, production of sweet potato went up by 1.7 percent from 133.94 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2016 to 136.25 thousand metric tons this year. The improvement in output could be attributed to the following:

o increased area planted in Agusan del Sur due to adequate rainfall during planting time; and

o bigger tubers harvested in Leyte due to sufficient soil moisture. • Eastern Visayas, the top producer of sweet potato with 49.95 thousand metric

tons shared 36.7 percent to the country’s total production. Bicol Region came next with 9.9 percent share and CALABARZON with 8.2 percent (Figure 16).

Cassava

• The July-September 2017 production of cassava at 619.83 thousand metric tons

was 1.9 percent higher than the same quarter of the previous year’s level of 608.07 thousand metric tons.

• The increase in output could be attributed to more areas planted in Isabela and Quirino due to continuous technical, financial and marketing assistance from San Miguel Corporation (SMC). Likewise, in Bukidnon due to increased demand for food, feeds and other industrial uses.

• ARMM registered the highest production at 269.95 thousand metric tons sharing

43.6 percent to total cassava production this quarter. This was followed by Northern Mindanao and Cagayan Valley with 15.9 percent and 15.3 percent shares, respectively (Figure 18).
