Every year in December, the streets of the Portuguese capital are invadedby the Lisbon Marathon – Portugal’s oldest marathon event. Departing from the emblematic Praça do Comércio, in front of the RiverTagus, the athletes advance through the city centre, passing through thehistoric zone of Belém, next to the Monastery of Jerónimos, listed as aWorld Heritage site by UNESCO. Belém marks the beginning of the returnjourney to the Praça do Comércio where the finishing line is located, in anitinerary that runs constantly alongside the river. The Lisbon Marathoninvolves a total distance of 42.195 km, in a level trajectory involving twocircuits. The event has been homologated by the AIMS and by the IAAF -the international associations for the sector. Every year in May, Monsanto celebrates the Festivity of the Crosses, alsoknown as the Festivity of the Castle, that recalls the local population’sheroic resistance to a siege. According to tradition, the population sought refuge in the castle in thesecond century B.C., and resisted a siege by the Romans during 7 years.In order to convince the enemy that they would never surrender as aresult of hunger, they decided to throw a heifer down the mountainslope, that they claimed had been fed on leftovers. This strategy fooledthe attackers and led them to end the siege. The inhabitants of the village recall this episode on May 3 [the day of theHoly Cross] or on the following Sunday. They ascend to the castle,singing and dancing to the sound of tambourines, and then once perchedon top of the walls, throw down clay pots symbolising the heiferdecorated with flowers, in a highly colourful festivity.

Brought from mainlandPortugal by the first colonists, the festivities of the Holy Spirit maintaintheir medieval origin as regards their popular features and the colour ofthe ceremonies. The invocation of the Holy Spirit during natural disastersthat have tormented the archipelago and the fame of its miracles, thehard life and the isolation of the islands contributed to the worship takingroot and lasting, while it disappeared on mainland Portugal. The rituals have hardly been altered. An emperor is crowned in the parishchurch. With a sceptre and a silver plate as a symbol of the Holy Spirit,he presides over the festivities every Sunday during the seven weeksfollowing Easter. On Whit Sunday, there is a great feast in the town. Thecentre of the ceremonies is a small chapel, or ‘empire’, used for thedistribution of the soup of the Holy Spirit, with meat and vegetables. Thisis where the crown, the plate and the sceptre can be viewed on the altar. The passing of time has given the festivities of the Holy Spirit individualcharacteristics on each island, although some common elements haveremained like the coronation of the ‘emperor’, the viewing of his insignia -the crown and the sceptre - the procession of the ‘emperor’ and the‘empress’ with their escort, the day of the feast when offerings of bread,meat and wine are distributed.
