Saying of the

PROMISED MESSIAHAS

You who claim to possess understanding! Know that this world is not eternal, so take hold of yourselves. Eschew all immoderation and abstain from every type of intox-icant. It is not alcohol alone that ruins a person. Opium, ganja [cannabis], charas [smoked cannabis], bhang [ed-ible cannabis], tarhi, and all other addictions are simi-larly destructive. They ruin the mind and destroy lives. So, shun all such substances. I cannot understand why one would choose to indulge in these intoxicants when, year on year, they claim the lives of thousands of ad-dicts — not to mention the torment of the hereafter.

[Kashti Nuh English 114-115, Urdu 88-89]

The fourth impediment to reformation of practice is the correlation between habit and practice. Habit can weaken one’s practices especially if governance is carried out without religious underpinning. Unfortunately, the acts that Islam considers as immoral are being practised in the Muslim world in spite of Muslim governments and in the non-Muslim world certain matters which demand reformation are not considered immoral. The government of a country has a role to play in reformation of practice where religion and government define reformation of practices in the same way. In such situations habits can be broken because of rules and regulations but places where the law does not lend a hand in reformation of practices, weaknesses of practice can become a toxin for the society. As we see many weaknesses of practice in the developed world which are now spreading everywhere because of the electronic media. Those who are brought up in this environment, being a part of this milieu, habitually adopt

some of its weaknesses. Young men and women are unconsciously inclined to these weaknesses and once habits are formed it becomes difficult to shake them off. By way of example those who habitually indulge in intoxication find it very hard to stop. A person can make the sacrifice of accepting One God instead of three and it will never be that having accepted One God, one fine day he will think about three gods. However, a person dependant on intoxication will certainly have withdrawal symptoms. He can give up a life-long creed but giving up a habit of few months or years makes him restless. There are people who come in the Jama’at having forsaken their families, even their wives and children but when they are asked to give up smoking, they look for hundreds of excuses. This is not the case with just the new Ahmadis but is applicable to everyone. [Friday Sermon December 20th 2013]

EDITORIALMy dear brothers!

Assalamu Alaikum

Youth are the backbone of every society and it is essential that they be given all available opportunity to excel and become productive members of their respective societies.   The youth of Canada are brimming with energy, potential and vigour. With great school, colleges, and world-class Universities, they have the ability to become scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs, inventors, innovators, leaders, soldiers, pilots, lawyers, businessmen etc. In addition, they can take part in nation building by helping the poor and the infirm, fighting for the rights of the most vulnerable, taking care of the environment, and most important of all, becoming servants of Ahmadiyyat Islam who convey the message of Islam all across Canada. That is why the founder of Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, Hazrat Musleh Mau’ud Khalifatul Masih IIra said: “Nations cannot be reformed without the

reformation of its youth.” Therefore, a society that needs protect its youth so they can reach their potential and this includes protecting them from all harms that can hinder their potential.

Drug addiction is a scourge of the current society that claims many lives each year. Youth are especially vulnerable to the harms of drug abuse and can easily waste their high potential by falling into a life of addiction, dependence and resulting criminal behaviour. In the Canadian society, some drugs like marijuana, are considered harmless and almost a third of the youth have used it. Youth in schools and colleges smoke marijuana to be cool, remove stress, and to ‘enjoy life’. Soon the use of marijuana as a recreational drug will be legal in Canada. My brothers, you will soon see more people using marijuana in your schools, colleges, and work places. These people will be destroying their lives by reducing their intellect and giving away their high potential — for what — a limited and temporary feeling of being ‘high’. This is not enjoyment but a potential death sentence. There are very severe consequences associated with marijuana use including reduction in IQ, memory, school grades and many who smoke regularly drop out of schools and never reach their full potential. Marijuana also affects a young person’s aim to achieve

something great in life; it changes their focus on immediate reward rather than nation building.

The next generation of Canadian youth can serve Canada to be a great nation, in addition, our Ahmadi youth are the backbone of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at and will one day become the leaders of this community, Insha’Allah. It will be criminal on our part to allow our youth to be destroyed by marijuana. Therefore, we have to stay away from drugs like marijuana and also encourage our brothers to not to seek it. It is also incumbent upon Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya to inculcate the right habits in our youth by informing them of any harms that can impede their intellectual and spiritual progress. This issue of An-Nida is about drug abuse with a special focus on marijuana. The articles include scientific knowledge about marijuana harms, a heart-wrenching experience of someone who lost a brother to drug abuse, how to get more from life and to say no to drugs, and several Ahadith and quotes on the harms of addictive drugs. I strongly encourage Khuddam to read the various articles in this issue to increase their knowledge.

The Holy Quran forbids the use of all intoxicants and this includes all the new ones including marijuana.

The Promised Messiahas in his book Noah’s Ark said “You who claim to possess understanding! Know that this world is not eternal, so take hold of yourselves. Eschew all immoderation and abstain from every type of intoxicant. It is not alcohol alone that ruins a person. Opium, ganja [cannabis], charas [smoked cannabis], bhang [edible cannabis], tarhi, and all other addictions are similarly destructive. They ruin the mind and destroy lives. So, shun all such substances. I cannot understand why one would choose to indulge in these intoxicants when, year on year, they claim the lives of thousands of addicts — not to mention the torment of the hereafter. [Kashti Nuh English 114-115, Urdu 88-89]

I pray that our youth stays away from marjiuana and all other intoxicating drugs. May we serve Islam Ahmadiyyat with our greatest potential and be nation builders, not those who destroy our lives and become people dependent upon our nation. Ameen.

HOW IT FEELS TO LOSE SOMEONE TO THE SCOURGE OF DRUGS

In 2012 I had been living and working in Ottawa, Ontario, making a life for myself and in my spare time, studying Islam and also trying to understand the teachings of the Prom-ised Messiahas. I was con-tent with the way my life was going, I had friends, I kept an active social life, and participated in sports and other activities. I was living the typical life of a young Canadian my age. I thought that I was nor-mal, I believed that how I was living was fine and didn’t feel that I need-ed any change. I kept in contact with my family who were living in On-tario and Nova Scotia and made annual trips to see them and touch base. It was July 1st, Canada Day, that I received a call from my brother that changed my life.

I was working for a com-pany that was restruc-turing a property outside of Ottawa and helping with construction and landscaping. It was a hot summer day and my cell phone gave a sharp ring.

A missed call notification. It was my elder broth-er Matt. I returned the call immediately. He had a break in his voice, he sounded like he’d been crying. All he could say was “He’s gone.” I had no idea what he was talking about so I asked… “who’s gone?” Then it came. “Ben’s gone.”

There are few situations in life that cause you ex-treme emotion, the type of emotion that causes you to kneel over in pain, to lose your breath in-stantaneously, to make you feel like you’re go-ing to lose consciousness. This was one of those moments in my life. If anyone has lost a sibling at anytime in their life they will understand the words as I write them. To lose a brother or a sis-ter is like losing a part of yourself, like losing some-thing that can never be replaced. If someone tells you “I know what you’re going through”, it never really feels like they do.

I immediately left my job

in Ottawa and traveled to be with my family. After a few weeks I relocated to be closer to my fam-ily as we were all deal-ing with this great loss. I don’t wish for anyone to have to go to a morgue at a hospital to identi-fy a family member or a loved one. It’s not like in the movies or on televi-sion. It’s real. It’s breath-taking but not in a good way. After my brother passed I started blam-ing myself, telling myself that if I had been there, if I had been around him I could’ve prevented what happened.

On the eve of Canada Day 2012 my brother Ben went out looking for illicit drugs, specifi-cally ecstasy, or MDMA. He purchased what he thought was ecstasy as he was looking forward to Canada day celebra-tions while partaking in the drug. The problem was that what he want-ed to buy that evening is

Page 15: Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya Canada AN-NIDA’...Holy QurAn 12 14 20 09 16 07 James Sinclair Imran Sarwar Dr. Tauseef Ahmad Khan م ی ح رلا ن م ح رلا ہ للا م س ب Management

not what he was given. My brother’s autopsy re-sult came back as a toxic overdose of opioids and other chemicals. He took one of those pills and that was the last thing he ever did. His friends tried to revive him but weren’t able to, they called an am-bulance but the paramed-ics weren’t able to save him either. A life wasted, he was 28 years old, my brother gone in a flash. It’s something that still brings tears to my eyes to this day.

Now some people who read this might think that my brother had a prob-lem with drugs. And I would agree with them. My brother had a prob-lem with drugs and alco-hol. And it all started with a rebellious attitude when he was younger. Ben was the kid who tried smoking cigarettes at a young age, Ben was the kid who start-ed smoking marijuana at a young age as well. So for those who think marijua-na is not a gateway drug I would tell them to take a closer look. It all starts somewhere.

By the time this article is published, Marijuana will be legal in Canada and it will be easier than ever for our youth to get their

hands on it. In my humble opinion this will be one of the biggest challenges for Jama’at Ahmadiyya here in Canada.

After my brother’s death I started taking my own life more seriously. I start-ed contemplating what I could do with my life to not only improve myself, but to help those around me as well. I started study-ing Islam more intensely and fell in love with the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophetsa. After research-ing the different factions within Islam it became clear to me that Ahmadi-yyat Islam was in fact the true understanding of the true religion. Ahmadis ar-en’t waiting for a bloody Messiah, on the contrary they have already accept-ed the peaceful Messiah in Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadianas. Is-lam teaches mercy and kindness, Islam teaches to worship God and to love God’s creation. This is beautiful to me and I wish I had found Islam sooner in my life.

The second successor to the Promised Messiahas

changed Jama’at Ahmadi-yya for the generations to follow, Hazrat Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad Khalifatul Masih

IIra gave such advice that could reshape civilization itself, Insha’Allah. His teaching “Nations cannot be reformed without the reformation of the youth” speaks the truth on more levels than can be appre-ciated by the layman. If our nations are to prog-ress and succeed under the banner of Khilafat we must follow this profound teaching. And it is the re-sponsibility of the parents to ensure this is fulfilled. As a relatively new con-vert I’m doing my part to make sure that my chil-dren, ages one and three, are both on the right track as they are both enrolled in the Waqf-e-Nau scheme. I pray that I can guide them, keep them from harm, and in-still in them the benefits of leading righteous, God fearing lives. As a Mis-sionary-in-Training it is my job to guide people towards Islam and to en-courage their reforma-tion. What better place to start than with my own family.

IS MARIJUANA HARMFUL?Allah says in the Holy Quran,

O ye who believe! intoxicants and games of chance and idols and divining arrows are only an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. So shun each one of them that you may prosper. [Al-Ma’idah Chapter 5, Verse 91]

In Arabic, the word used for any substance that intoxicates is khamr; it applies to all sub-stances that can cloud a per-son’s intellect and obscure judgement. One of the reasons why such intoxicants are pro-hibited in Islam is because they prevent a person from offering their obligatory prayers. In the Holy Quran, Allah says,

O ye who believe! approach not Prayer when you are not in full possession of your senses until you know what you say. [Al-Nisa’ Chapter 4, Verse 44]

Burden

Marijuana (or cannabis) is the most widely used illegal sub-stance in the world. According to the latest Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey per-formed in 2015, marijuana was the most used illicit drug in this country. More than 12 per-cent of Canadians reported us-ing it in the past year, this fig-ure reaching up to 1/3rd among the youth (15 to 24 year of age). One-third of those who report-ed using marijuana consume it daily or almost daily. The con-sumption is highest in British Columbia (17 percent) and low-est in Prince Edward Island (8

percent).

For the past many years, public opinion was heavily in favor of legalizing this drug in Canada. Heeding that call, the Canadi-an parliament has passed a bill which will make consumption of marijuana for recreation-al purpose legal from October 2018.

Regular marijuana use during youth is of great concern as young people are more vulnera-ble to the harmful consequenc-es of this drug. It is important that we remain abreast of the knowledge about the harms of marijuana to better protect ourselves, our youth and our community. In addition, we should also appreciate its ben-efits, limited as they may be. In this article a brief summary of the health effects of marijuana will be highlighted without go-ing into the issues surrounding its legalization.

Usage

Leaves and flowers of the Can-nabis Sativa plant are smoked in cigarettes, cigars, water pipes, or “blunts” (marijuana rolled in the tobacco-leaf wrap-per from a cigar). Hashish is created from the resin of mar-ijuana flowers and is usually smoked (by itself or in a mix-ture with tobacco) but it can be ingested orally. Marijuana can also be used to brew tea, and its oil-based extract can be mixed into food products like cookies, brownies and sweets.

Acute effects

The active compound in mar-ijuana is delta-9-tetrahydro-

cannabinol (THC). Users feel a ‘high,’ with a subjective in-crease in euphoria, relaxation, heightened awareness of sensa-tions, deeper thought, change in taste and aroma, more per-ception to music and comedy, and distortions in perceptions of time and space. Very high doses can lead to hallucinations and lose the sense of one’s iden-tity. Objective testing shows that marijuana use leads to impaired motor coordination, poor planning, and organiza-tion, the inability to problem solve, and poor decision mak-ing and behavioral control. In addition, user memory recall and memory formation is also impaired. When smoked, these effects appear within 10 min-utes, remain for around 2-4 hours and then resolve in about 4-6 hours. Ingested marijuana takes longer to show symptoms but they also last longer. THC also leads to increased heart rate, blood pressure and effects blood vessels relaxation. Such hemodynamic changes could provoke heart attacks in those with heart disease. In heart pa-tients, the rate of heart attack is almost five times higher in the first hour of marijuana use compared to only 3 times the risk with exercise.

Addiction

Evidence shows that long-term marijuana use leads to addiction. Approximately 9% of those who experiment with marijuana will become addict-ed. Among teenagers 20% of first time users will become addicted and one-third of those will use it daily. Marijuana withdrawal is associated with symptoms that include irrita-

bility, sleeping difficulties, dys-phoria, craving, and anxiety. This makes quiting difficult and contributes to relapse.

Long-term effects on memory and cognition

Long-term studies on marijua-na use show a wide range of harmful effects. Marijuana us-ers suffer from decline in abil-ity to understand situations as well as memory loss. This effect is temporary with only occa-sional use. However, consistent use from an early age (less than 18 years old) combined with higher concentration of mari-juana, has been shown to lead to irreversible harm to memo-ry, IQ, general functioning and ability to perform long-term planning. Studies have proven that using Marijuana in youth has a toxic effect on nerves and hampers the growth of hippo-campus (part of brain which retains memory). Giving up marijuana may not lead to a full reversal of the above structural and functional changes.

School performance

Regular marijuana use lowers IQ and impairs working mem-ory. This affects school perfor-mance resulting in impaired school performance, poor grades, earlier drop-out, fail-ure to keep up with lessons, and reduced desire to pursue high-er education. This is known as marijuana-induced ‘amotiva-tional syndrome’. The reduction in academic potential is possi-bly a combination of the cog-nitive impairment, affiliation with peers who leave school early and a direct effect of mar-ijuana on long-term goal-orient-ed thinking.

Psychosis

The most adverse association of regular marijuana use is the in-

creased risk of psychosis (mad-ness) in later life. Large observa-tional studies now indicate that this association is most likely causal. Psychosis is a condition of the mind resulting in an in-ability to tell what is real and what is not. Symptoms include false beliefs and seeing or hear-ing things that others do not see or hear, incoherent speech and behavior that is inappropriate for the situation, sleep prob-lems, social withdrawal, lack of motivation, and difficulties car-rying out daily activities.

Research shows that THC me-diates most of its effects in the brain on a family of receptors that are implicated in schizo-phrenia. In young people (those less than 18 years old) this sys-tem is undergoing substantial development and research has shown they are five times more likely to develop subsequent psychosis. There is still some de-bate about the causal nature of this association. Some scientists contend that marijuana does not increase the risk of psycho-sis as those who are already at elevated risk of mental health issues are more likely to use marijuana. While others have argued that psychosis is a com-plex disease with myriad genet-ic and environmental factors interplaying together and mar-ijuana is one of the major risk factors. Higher dose, lower age, and longer duration of use are all associated with increased risk; furthermore, earlier onset and exacerbated course of psy-chotic illness pointing towards a possible causal role of contin-ued marijuana exposure. Increase in risky behaviors

Marijuana intoxication in-creases impulsivity and causes disinhibition while impairing decision-making — this pre-disposes individuals to engage in potentially risky behaviors.

Users might find themselves more often in violent situations compared to non-users. There is moderate evidence that regular and heavy marijuana use in the youth is associated with an in-creased rate of suicide ideation, attempts, and incidence. Mari-juana disrupts motor coordina-tion, visual function, and man-agement of unexpected events making driving unsafe. In spite of this information, consum-ers often underestimate their impairment leading to a false sense of security. Marijuana intake doubles the risk of vehi-cle collisions within four hours of consumption — this is why driving under the influence of marijuana is a crime.

Harm in the youth

Young people are especially vulnerable to the harmful ef-fects of marijuana. They are twice as likely than non-users to drop out of school and display a higher incidence of psychosis, dependence and irreversible cognitive impairment. These harms are proportional to fre-quency, dose, and duration of use. Studies have also shown that marijuana can be a gateway drug, especially in young peo-ple, which means that marijua-na users are more likely to use other illicit drugs. One possible mechanism is that it primes the brain for enhanced response to other drugs. Another reason is that marijuana users are in an environment with easier access to other illegal drugs.

Marijuana and cancer

Those who smoke marijuana, in addition to getting the effects of the active ingredient, also suf-fer from the ill effects related to smoking tar. This includes a cough, wheeze, chest prob-lems including bronchitis and emphysema. Daily marijuana

users show pre-cancerous le-sions in the cellular lining of their lungs that is equivalent to smoking 20-30 cigarettes a day. Similar to smoking, marijuana has been shown to increase the relative risk of lung cancer per year by eight percent in small studies, though larger well-de-signed studies have not been performed. It is not known if marijuana increases the risk of cancer when vaporized or con-sumed in food.

Does it kill?

Some people consider marijua-na to be safe as there are no reported fatal overdoses in lit-erature. However, its use is as-sociated with fatal outcomes, e.g. dangerous driving, heart at-tacks in high risk subjects, and users often end up in violent situations related to illicit use. It may also increase the risk of long-term conditions which might reduce life-expectancy, e.g., elevated risk of lung cancer, suicides, and reduction in intel-lectual function.

Marijuana in pregnancy

Marijuana has serious effects on the developing brain during fetal life. Emerging evidence shows that marijuana consump-tion during pregnancy is asso-ciated with loss of pregnancy, smaller birth weight and cogni-tive deficits in babies.

Concentration of THC

A cause for concern these days is the increased THC concentra-tion in the new varieties of the marijuana plant. During the past 30 years, the THC content in marijuana in Canada has in-creased from 2 percent to 12, and some varieties now have up to 30 percent THC content. It means that a typical recreation-al intake now has a potential to give a very high THC dose. Some have argued that there is no in-

crease in harm as users adjust their dose when using more po-tent marijuana. However, there is limited evidence that users adjust for dose at all. It is most likely that the youth today is getting a much higher dose of THC than they did 20 years ago. The long-term effects of such doses have not been studied.

Benefits of marijuana

According to the Holy Quran, the eternal truth of creation is that everything that exists is of benefit to mankind.

That which benefits men, it stays on the earth [Al-Ra d Chapter 13, Verse 18]

Thus, marijuana must also have benefits. Indeed, research has found efficacy for this drug in some disease conditions. There is conclusive evidence that mar-ijuana can alleviate symptoms caused by chemotherapy, such as nausea and vomiting. There is substantial evidence for mod-est pain reduction in chronic pain and for a moderate reduc-tion in spasms in multiple scle-rosis. There is limited evidence for increasing appetite and weight gain in HIV patients, im-provement in sleep problems, and symptom reduction in so-cial anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is current-ly insufficient or no evidence for any other health benefit. It is possible that marijuana might have other health benefits and research is continuing in that regard. However, as it stands, there are very limited number of situations where medical marijuana would be needed. Considering the narrow area of benefit, the perception of the public and the focus of media on the medical benefits of marijua-na is substantially exaggerated. While a substantial proportion of people cite medical reasons for the use marijuana, in reality

the vast majority of use in Cana-da is recreational.

Conclusion

All in all, marijuana has both harms and benefits. Evidence suggests that the harms exceed its benefits. Given that around 20 percent of those who try marijuana before adulthood will become dependent on it, it is very important that youth are protected from the outset by consistent messages about its harms.

The Promised Messiahas says:

“Eschew all immoderation and abstain from every type of intoxicant. It is not alco-hol alone that ruins a person. Opium, ganja [marijuana], charas [smoked marijuana], bhang [edible marijuana], tarhi, and all other addic-tions are similarly destruc-tive. They ruin the mind and destroy lives. So, shun all such substances. I cannot understand why one would choose to indulge in these intoxicants when, year on year, they claim the lives of thousands of addicts — not to mention the torment of the hereafter.”[Kashti Nuh English 114-115]

In the above excerpt, the Prom-ised Messiahas says that mar-ijuana ruins the mind and destroys lives. This is exactly what modern science has also uncovered. It is incumbent upon us, Ahmadi Muslims, who have been raised for the ‘good of mankind’ that we stay away from recreational marijuana ourselves and inform others of its harms also.

By Imran Sarwar, Brampton CentreIn this day and age, it should be quite clear to any individual that recreational drugs can have a severe and dangerous impact. Canada, is facing an opioid epidemic, as of last year, there were a total of over 4,000 deaths just by opioid overdose (opioids are a central nervous system depressant, which are used for their euphoric and ‘relaxing’ effect on people). Nonetheless, this is just one drug that is causing a great concern for this nation, we can only imagine now, all the different drugs which are being used on a day to day basis with severe, if not fatal consequences.

Most people know, that drugs in general are dangerous, so why is it still so prevalent? What can be defined as a drug? Some can say any type of addiction can be classified as a drug (e.g a stimulant such as coffee). But, if we were to look at this in simplest terms, a drug can be described as anything that interacts within the body, to create a difference in one’s emotional, physical, mental, and perhaps spiritual health. If this problem exists, how can this be solved? There are certain points which I will try to convey today, but if there is one message that I have for all my Ahmadi brothers and sisters it is: this

can happen to ANYONE, and everyone. We must learn to educate ourselves and help one another which will only strengthen the bond and confidence through the community.

As a recent graduate in Paramedicine and someone who has been on the road as an interning paramedic, I learnt that drugs affect all faces of life. It could range from a homeless man who is dependent on methadone (painkiller) to a 15-year-old teenager living in a middle to upper class family. There is no true identity as to what a drug user may look like. One of my professors narrated an incident when he was on a road, about a man he picked up from a rehab centre and needed to be taken to the hospital. Upon receiving the patient’s identification,

he noticed the patients ID card stated “DR”. To his surprise, this patient he was picking up was a former anesthesiologist, who got addicted to fentanyl (opioid) and was terminated from his job and practice of medicine. The patient explained how he lost almost everything; from his house, car, and tragically his wife and family. This incident is not only a sign of what drug addiction can do, but an iteration that indeed, drugs can affect everyone and anyone. One of the first and most important things, that each Ahmadi brother and sister can do is dua (prayer) to seek help from Allah for protection from this evil for ourselves, our fellow Ahmadis and other Canadians. Whether it is yourself who is facing this challenge, or someone you may know, Prayer is the greatest power to overcome great barriers.

If he draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed. (Sahih Bukhari)

It is vital to understand, that as a community and as individuals, we should not be quick to judge others

THE PROCESS OF DUAREPENTANCE, UNDERGOING CHANGE & GETTING HELP

20

Page 21: Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya Canada AN-NIDA’...Holy QurAn 12 14 20 09 16 07 James Sinclair Imran Sarwar Dr. Tauseef Ahmad Khan م ی ح رلا ن م ح رلا ہ للا م س ب Management

who may be facing difficulty in their lives. As God states in the Holy Quran, he is Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim; the Gracious and Merciful. The beauty of prayer is that it is solely a relationship between yourself and God. Many individuals turn to therapists, rehab centres, etc. to get rid of this drug addiction, but a relationship between you and God is infinite, as He is available whenever you call upon him, day or night.

Repentance is a vital factor as well. When one prays to God, he is making a commitment and asking God to help them overcome this difficulty. It is important, in not only this situation, but in life, to repent for what you have prayed for. Finding alternatives instead of drug usage is crucial in taking effective steps to sobriety. It is a cliché, but a very important lesson, in that the first step to resolving a problem, is accepting that there indeed is one. Once you begin to refrain/repent, the person can plan towards undergoing a change.

Whenever I had a day in which many things needed to be completed, whether it be an errand, or an assignment or reading, it was crucial for me to organize myself in a timely manner. An individual who is trying to overcome drugs, or any addiction, will look for any moment throughout the day to quit their goals, and give

in to the pressures of drug use. As Ahmadi Muslims, we are fortunate enough to have a guideline structured for us, and that is through our five daily prayers. When we look at alternative solutions for spending time for individuals with drug addictions, we can see many opportunities.Physical exercise is a great way to not only keep the mind and body in good shape, but a way to relieve oneself from other cravings. A person can set out a plan, that after Fajr, he or she will exercise for one hour, followed by breakfast, and then return to rest for a couple of hours. In addition, a person can set out individual goals and tasks according to our five daily prayers, and keep themselves not only occupied, but effective in maintaining their mental and physical health, as well as their spiritual health. It is not to say, that this is an easy task, there can be many days where an individual may fail and relapse to the same drug habits. The key is persistence (again dua or supplication is a big factor here) to a better lifestyle and development and understanding that short term difficulties will play a less significant role in the long run.

As I stated before, being a paramedic, I have witnessed emotional and physical pain, in not only patients but their families. And I will probably see more as the years go by. It is important to not repress these emotions that may be

felt and get help and speak to others about whatever is on your mind. Again, we are blessed that we are able to communicate with God, through prayers, and through our beloved Khalifa. At times, we wish to not speak to anyone about what is upsetting us and want to remain private about our matters. Writing a letter to Huzooraa creates a bond that is not only beneficial spiritually but helps keep a privacy and connection between yourself and God. In addition, family and friends are a great source for keeping an individual steadfast and determined to make a change. By writing or by speaking about problems you encounter, it will help yourself to be clear with the situation, and realize that this problem does not need to be dealt with alone. Inshallah, with the Grace of God such problems are overcome faster than the person realizes.

Drug addiction is a continuing epidemic that will affect many in Canada and it is our job to help raise awareness about this matter and reach out and promote change. Whether it is within our own community, or own family, all Ahmadis, whether they be in Ansar, Lajna, Atfal, or are part of Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya are important in spreading the message of brotherhood and sisterhood.

Five Khuddam do WaqF’ arzi in Jamaica

By Jaleese Dar

Alhamdullilah, by the Grace of Almighty Allah, a group of Khuddam had the blessed opportunity to perform Waqf’ Arzi in Jamaica at the occasion of the 2018 Jalsa Salana. This trip was organized by Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya Canada and Khuddam visited the Island in May 2018. A total of five Khuddam from three regions (York, Eastern Canada and Mississauga) took part in this Waqf’ Arzi.

This experience is truly extraordinary and beyond description. Khuddam were energized and passionate about serving humanity under the banner of Ahmadiyyat. It was an amazing atmosphere which was elevated with the attendance of dignitaries from the USA and Canada. Respected Amir Jama’at Canada Lal Khan Malik Sahib and Missionary-in-Charge USA Jama’at Azhar Hanif Sahib also

attended the convention.

Khuddam got a chance to mingle with local residents and new converts during their stay. Alhamdullilah there was also a bai’it of one young Khadim in Jamaica during the trip. This was a heart moving moment and caused renewed faith amongst the Khuddam visiting from Canada. Some highlights of the trip included a 2-day convention held on mosque property, tabligh efforts to local community, trip to Ocho Rios Jamaican resort island, and inspirational speeches by guests.

These types of trips prove to be very beneficial in the self-reformation of young Khuddam and is an excellent way to serve humanity and strengthen ones faith. There are more opportunities to serve in the future.and we should strive to take part in
