Natural resources form the basis of ourexistence on this planet. The objectives of ourpolicy are for these resources to be usedsparingly and in a manner which takes therequirements of both nature and humanityinto account. Our declared policy is integratedenvironmental protection. This policy startsat the root causes and encompasses in itsmanagement decisions all the consequencesfor the environment which could arise fromproduction processes or the productsthemselves. You too can help to protect the environmentby operating your Mercedes-Benz in anenvironmentally responsible manner.
Operating conditions and your individualdriving style to a large extent influence fuelconsumption and the rate of engine, brake, and tire wear. To reduce fuel consumptionand the rate of wear, please consider thefollowing:Ravoid short trips.Rmake sure that the tire pressures are
always correct.Ravoid frequent, abrupt acceleration.Rdo not carry any unnecessary weight.Rdo not warm up the engine with the vehicle
stationary.Rshift gears such that each gear is used only
up to 2/3 of its maximum engine speed.Rkeep an eye on the vehicle’s fuel
consumption.A regularly serviced vehicle will also helpprotect the environment. You should adhereto the maintenance intervals displayed by theMaintenance System service indicator, along

Introduction
Mercedes-Benz Maintenance SystemYour Mercedes-Benz comes equipped withthe Mercedes-Benz Maintenance System. The Maintenance System tracks distancedriven and the time elapsed since your lastservice. The maintenance service is indicatedin the multifunction display in the instrumentcluster.Approximately 1 month before amaintenance service is due, a messageappears in the multifunction display. Themessage provides the remaining miles ordays until the next maintenance service isdue.A descriptive listing of the service items arecontained in this booklet starting on(Y page 10). Following each maintenanceservice, your authorized Mercedes-BenzCenter will reset the Maintenance Systemservice indicator by confirming the serviceitems performed. The authorized Mercedes-Benz Centerperforming the maintenance services willconfirm the work has been carried out usingthe Confirmation pages in this booklet(Y page 39).We continuously strive to improve ourproduct and ask for your understanding thatwe reserve the right to make changes in theperiodic maintenance work for our vehicles. The information in this manual is accurate asof the press date. At the time of yourscheduled maintenance appointments withyour authorized Mercedes-Benz Center, themost current maintenance work informationwill be utilized for your vehicle’s age ormileage. Please check with your authorizedMercedes-Benz Center for any changes to theperiodic maintenance work for your vehicle.
i If the Maintenance System servicecounter was inadvertently reset, have anauthorized Mercedes-Benz Center correctit. Please only reset if the proper

Required and Recommended ServiceWork
Required and Recommended Service Workincludes inspection or maintenance of manydifferent components and systems in yourvehicle. The replacement of certaincomponents at varying intervals is also partof Required and Recommended ServiceWork.Required Service Work is intended to helpmaximize the service life of components orsystems important to your vehicle’scontinued proper operation. In addition to the Required Service Work,Recommended Service Work is intended toprovide you with the flexibility to choosewhich maintenance work is performed onyour vehicle based on its needs orrecommendations from your authorizedMercedes-Benz Center.
i Please note any maintenance work notperformed or not performed at thespecified interval which results in thefailure of the warranted component(s) orsystem(s) in question may not be coveredby the Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle LimitedWarranty.
Tire rotationYour vehicle’s tires are a critical componentto overall vehicle performance and vehiclestability. The useful life of tires will vary andis proportional to tire type, speed rating, ambient conditions, tire loading, tire inflationpressure, road surfaces, and individualdriving style, among other factors. Mercedes-Benz recommends regular checksfor wear and proper inflation and, if applicableto your vehicle’s tire configuration, tirerotation.Tire rotations can be performed on vehicleswith the same front and rear tire dimensions,e.g. if appropriate winter tires are mounted. If your vehicle is equipped with the same tiredimensions, tires can be rotated by observinga front-to-rear rotation pattern that willmaintain the intended rotation (spinning)direction of the tire (on unidirectional tires, anarrow on the sidewall indicates the intendedrotation or spinning direction of the tire). Ifyour vehicle is configured with staggered tiresizes (different tire sizes, front vs. rear), tirerotations are not possible. If your vehicle’s tire configuration allows fortire rotation, tire rotation should beperformed in accordance with therecommended intervals, or sooner at firstsigns of irregular (uneven) tread wear. Tirerotation recommendations will likelynecessitate a tire rotation at least once inbetween maintenance services and at everymaintenance service based on Mercedes-Benz maintenance intervals. For your convenience, this MaintenanceBooklet contains a tire rotation confirmationpage on which you can record the date andmileage when tire rotations were performed(Y page 39).
Severe operating conditionsThe maintenance intervals have beendetermined so that the vehicle, under normaloperating conditions, should operateproperly between maintenance services.Severe operating conditions may call forcorrespondingly sooner replacement of thefollowing items:RInterior filters
(combination filter) is replaced as called forby the Maintenance System. Under severe
dust conditions, or with the Climate Controlfrequently operating in the air recirculationmode, the filter should be replaced morefrequently than indicated by theMaintenance System.RSpark plugs
Spark plugs should be replaced accordingto the specified maintenance interval.Severe operating conditions (frequentstarting and stopping, excessive idling, sustained fast highway driving) may call forspark plugs to be replaced correspondinglysooner.RCoolant
Have the coolant (water/anticorrosion/antifreeze mixture) replaced at thespecified maintenance interval.Replacement of coolant may be requiredmore frequently if coolant is not maintainedaccording to instructions and/or otherthan approved anticorrosion/antifreezeproducts for your vehicle are being used. For instructions on coolant, see "Coolants"in your vehicle Operator's Manual. For alisting of approved anticorrosion/antifreeze products for your vehicle, contact your authorized Mercedes-BenzCenter.
Wear itemsWhile the Maintenance System calls forinspection of certain wear items, the systemdoes not make any judgment on the conditionof these wear items. Only a qualifiedtechnician can determine if a wear item needsto be replaced.
Tested and approved engine oils andoil filters
Engine oils and oil filters are specificallytested for their suitability in our engines anddurability for our service intervals. Therefore, only use approved engine oils and oil filters

Emission System Maintenance
Gasoline engineThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyand, in California, the Air Resources Boardhave certified that the emission controlsystems of your vehicle comply with theapplicable exhaust emission standards forMY 2011 vehicles. To be certain that the emission controlsystems function as designed, regularmaintenance is necessary for components ofthe vehicle which affect exhaust andevaporative emissions composition. The vehicle owner is responsible for theregular maintenance of the emission controlsystem, as well as the use of premiumunleaded gasoline with an anti-knock index ofat least 91 (displayed on the pump) in allgasoline engine models unless otherwisespecified.Failure to properly maintain the emissionsystem may result in repairs not beingcovered by the emission system warranties.Explanations of each maintenance job aregiven on (Y page 9).

Emission Control System Caution –Gasoline Engines
Your Mercedes-Benz vehicle is equipped withboth a three-way catalyst and a closed loopoxygen sensor system to comply with currentexhaust emission regulations. Keep yourvehicle in proper operating condition byfollowing our recommended maintenanceinstructions as outlined. The following must be adhered to:a) In all gasoline engine models, use only premium unleaded gasoline with an anti-knock index of at least 91 (as displayed on the pump) unless otherwise specified. Damage to the engine could occurif premium unleaded fuel is not used. Refer tothe Operator’s Manual for specialprecautions.b) Leaded gasoline should not be used under any circumstances. Damage to theemission control components will result.c) In select models, the use of Ethanol (E85) is also permissible. Models capableof also operating with E85 are identified by alabel on the fuel filler flap reading ’Premiumgasoline or E85 only!’. Do not use Ethanol fuel(E85) to operate any vehicle unless it isspecifically identified as Ethanol fuel (E85)compatible. Damage to the engine couldoccur if improper fuels are used. Refer to theOperator’s Manual for special precautions.d) The specified engine maintenance jobs must be performed completely and at the required intervals. Properly functioningspark plugs for instance are important for theservice life of the catalysts. Failure to properlyperform the specified maintenance jobs mayadversely affect the emission control systemon the vehicle and reduce its service life.e) The operation of the emission control system must not be altered in any way.Alterations are not permissible by law. Inaddition, alterations may result in damage tothe catalysts, increased fuel consumption, and impaired engine running conditions.
f) Irregular engine running conditions should be corrected immediately by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Suchirregular running conditions can influence theproper function of the emission controlsystem. If the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator lamp in theinstrument cluster illuminates when theengine is running, it indicates a possiblemalfunction of the engine managementsystem or emission control system. We recommend that you have themalfunction checked as soon as possible.
Description of Emission SystemMaintenance Jobs
The composition of exhaust emissions isinfluenced not only by the special emissioncontrol equipment, but also by various enginecomponents and their adjustments. Therefore, emission system maintenancemust include these engine components. Some maintenance jobs are actually onlytests. They are important however, becausethey allow early detection of discrepancieswhich can later lead to increased exhaustemissions. It is generally less expensive tohave such items adjusted immediately ratherthan allowing them to contribute to costlyrepairs. The maintenance intervals have beendetermined so that the vehicle, under normalconditions, should operate properly betweenservices.
Changing the engine oil and filterChange the engine oil and oil filter every10,000 miles or 1 year. If oil consumptionshould increase, determine the cause andtake necessary corrective steps. Do not resetthe Maintenance System service indicator ifthe oil level is adjusted or changed outsidethe interval of 10,000 miles or 1 year.
