APRIL 2020

Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road InterchangeConstruction update

Bridge beams to be installed and works to start on new PSP

Next month, the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road Interchange project will hit some major milestones as works continue to progress towards project completion early 2021.

Bridge construction

During April, we completed the construction of the three piers and two abutments ready for the installation of the bridge beams in mid-May 2020.

The 12, 110 tonne and 35 metre long beams will be lifted on top of the structures and secured into place using a 500 tonne hydraulic crane.

Works will then focus on constructing the bridge deck, which involves the tying of more than 100 tonnes of steel reinforcement and 360m3 of concrete, followed by some finishing works before the traffic can be diverted onto part of the new bridge.

Road construction

Road construction teams are continuing to progress at a rapid rate with more than 4,000 tonnes of asphalt laid to date.

Asphalt has been laid on the Roe Highway southbound lanes (south of Kalamunda Road), for approximately 500m through to the tie in with the existing Roe Highway, as well as on Kalamunda Road, east of Roe Highway.

Sections of the Roe Highway southbound lanes, north of Kalamunda Road are also on schedule for asphalt to be laid in May 2020.

Road works on Kalamunda Road on the west side of Roe Highway should start by the end of April 2020. The first stage of works will take place between Range View Road and the Maida Vale Shopping Centre, before progressing towards Roe Highway.

Kalamunda Road detour

By approximately late May 2020, traffic will no longer be able to turn left onto Roe Highway from Kalamunda Road heading west. Traffic will be detoured for approximately six weeks via an alternate route to Roe Highway.

Once the detour route has been approved, it will be communicated to the community. Signs will be installed closer to the date notifying drivers of when the detour will start and also to direct traffic through the detour when in effect.

The detour will enable crews to start constructing the new road configuration on the south east corner of the traffic lights that will tie in with the new bridge. By July, traffic will switch to a new road alignment, which will see vehicles on part of the new bridge with access to Roe Highway southbound from Kalamunda Road (heading east and west) via the new roundabout and on-ramp.

Underground services

Works to install two water pipes under Kalamunda Road have been rescheduled and will be undertaken in May 2020. The pipes will be installed between Roe Highway and Range View Road. While these works are taking place, a section of Kalamunda Road will need to be closed. The works will occur after hours to ensure minimal impact on daytime road users. Signs will be in place along this section of road to inform road users of the date in advance of the works.

Principal Shared Path (PSP)

A new section of Principal Shared Path (PSP) along Roe Highway between Maida Vale Road and Berkshire Road in close to completion. We thank local residents and the cycling community for their patience during the construction period.

In the coming months, works will begin to upgrade the existing 400 metres of path between the end of the new PSP and the Berkshire Road roundabout to current PSP standards. This will allow the new path to connect with the existing path network.

To allow cyclists to utilise the newly constructed path while the remaining works are taking place, the path will open between Maida Vale Road and Sultana Crescent early May 2020. From Sultana Crescent, cyclists will be diverted into Apricot Street south to Berkshire Road.

Advanced notice of out of hours work

Water pipe installation works: During May 2020, works will be undertaken for two consecutive nights during the week to install two water pipes under Kalamunda Road. Works will start at 7pm and be finished by 7am.

Beam installation: To install the bridge beams in mid-May 2020, crews may be required to work longer hours than usual. The beams may be delivered during night shift and installation works may commence before 7am on Saturday and Sunday, and finish after 7pm, subject to progress. However, this activity will have minimal impacts on residents or road users.

Minor works: Some intermittent night works may also be required to safely undertake other smaller sections of works. Out of hours work may be undertaken from 7pm to 7am Tuesday 28 April to Monday 25 May 2020.
