In November of 2012 we opened Handmade Kalamazoo, a pop up shop, in the board room of the Vine Neighborhood Association. The community rallied and supported our efforts so we found space on the downtown mall during December. Each year since then, we have utilized vacant space to pop up, selling the works of over 150 makers, musicians and vintage collectors.

We found a common thread, an amazing pool of gift and talent, but a limited amount of affordable retail space. So, we set out to find a raw space that could host an array of shops, in a heavy traffic area - affordable for small businesses to test their hands at owning and operating their own shops. Main & Drake was born.

We are excited to bring this unique shopping experience to Kalamazoo and look forward to building it with you, our neighbors!

“At Kalamazoo Soap Co., our goal is to offer our customers a safe, natural alternative to the harsh chemicals found in commercial soaps. We strive to provide the most natural and high quality oils and butters that are the most nourishing to the skin, leaving it as soft as the day you were born. All our colorants are from natural plant or mineral materials and our essential oils and fragrance oils are of the highest quality. None of our soaps have animal oils or mineral oil/ petroleum products. Our soaps are made the old fashion way of cold processing; all natural with the use of lye (sodium hydroxide), which is neutralized (saponified) during the process, making soap, well....soap. Since our soaps are all handcrafted and handcut, there will be some variations in size, shape, and coloring.”

Beth Caton has had a love of fiber from an early age. At 7, her mother taught her to sew, her mother and grandmother taught her to knit. She started designing handbags, totes and clothes and never stopped.

While now in her 60’s, her love of working with fiber is still strong today. When she looks at a piece of fabric or hanks of yarn she envisions the end project and sets about how to make it work.

As a child, Penny Dunham was inspired to become a seamstress while watching her mother create beauty and functionality using a sewing machine. Her early sewing education came from her mother as well as her aunt, grandmother and home ec. teachers. Since then she has taken some classes but has mostly learned from other seamstresses; most notable her sister Laura, who’s skill and knowledge is legendary.

Penny has a passion for making things work for people. Much time has been spent in alterations, repurposing and solving problems by creative solutions through sewing. Her interest in purses in general was piqued while spending any kind of shopping expeditions deteriorating into looking for the perfect purse that doesn’t seem to exist. Her interest in clutch purses came about when her son’s fiance (now wife) asked her to create purses for the bridesmaids and the bride. From there, other brides asked for help and a business was born.

Custon clutch purses have become Penny’s favorite to make. A customer has many choices in design - the outer fabric, the lining fabric, the frame color, strap variations and customization through special labels. She has created purses from customer provided fabric in the form of a fur collar, a leather coat, vintage clothing and a mother of the bride’s wedding dress. If you want to just choose an already made purse, Penny has a variety of both fancy and casual purses that will surely meet your needs.
