Pitch Update A very successful working bee saw the shock pad removed, well done to everyone who lent a hand, particularly Ian Robbins who supplied a forklift and bins making the removal process much easier than anticipated!

Many thanks to John Collett for completing the "contour map" of our sub-base - some four days work. Where would we be without people like John? Contractors should start this week levelling and sealing the sub-base in preparation for the installation of the shock pad and eventually the new playing surface!

Bunnings BBQ Thanks to all of our volunteers, particularly Sue Kitto for organising and Chris Abineri for running back and forth all day. We had a very successful BBQ taking over $2,000!

Indoor Hockey hits off PADHC has 2 teams in the junior indoor hockey. The competition is being played at the SA Velodrome.

Craig has demonstrated a high level of understanding and creativity within the modern game along with an enthusiasm to develop highly successful junior athletes. We look forward to Craig being able to share these skills and attributes more broadly across the Network and with our national identified junior athletes. "I'm extremely eager and excited to begin the challenge ahead to help lead success and inspire our young Australian athletes. Whilst also driving and working cohesively with all stakeholders within our great hockey network," Victory stated. "I would like to thank the South Australian Sports Institute for their exceptional support and guidance over the past four years, along with the many great athletes within the program that I have had the pleasure of working with," Victory said.

With a number of younger players gaining Olympic experience in London this year, the 2013 squad will be well placed going into the next cycle of major tournaments and in four year’s time be in a position to compete against the world’s best. “We have made progress in the past 18 months with a great mix youth and experience, and 2013 will be another step on the road to Rio,” said Commens.

AHL Results

The Victorian Women have defeated NSW in the Grand Final of today’s Australian Hockey League Grand Final and crowned the 2012 Champions.

Grand Final Day Results Victoria 5 def New South Wales 1 (half time 4-1) Goals- VIC: Own goal (7m), Claire Messent (26m FG), Stephanie Riordan (30m FG), Sam Ellis (35m

PC), Danielle Schubach (37m FG) NSW: Georgina Morgan (4m PC)

5th v 6th Play-off Australian Capital Territory 2 def South Australia 1 (half time 2-0) Goals- ACT: Samantha Charlton (11m FG), Anna Flanagan (14 PC) SA: Katie Pisani (39m FG)

Both the Strikers and Suns have played some good hockey this week and were both in contention for a Semi Finals spot coming into the final round; however other results didn’t go their way, so they both had to settle for classification games this year. The Strikers have been well served this year by Anna Flanagan and Katie Glynn who have been in great touch over the 2 weeks here in Perth. SA knew they would have to contain these 2 stars if they were to secure 5th spot today. Canberra started the stronger of the 2 teams and went into half time in control with a 2-0 lead, courtesy of goals by NZ import Samantha Charlton who struck on the 18 minute mark and then PC Specialist Anna Flanagan who slotted another one home beautifully, only a minute later.

The 2011 Champion SA Suns came out with increased intensity early in the 2nd half and got a goal back only 4 minutes after the restart, when Sharpshooter Katie Pisani slotted it home, to add to her impressive goal tally this year. This meant the Suns had as much as 30 minutes to find the equalizer, however the Strikers defence, led by their Captain Edwina Bone and Sub Goalkeeper Tara McLaughlin, were able to thwart any danger coming into the circle by the Suns’ forwards. Canberra themselves, also were finding it hard to do much damage up forward, having less space than they were afforded in the first half. Any chances they did have were well blocked by Keeper Deanne Gilbert, who has been in good touch throughout the Tournament. As they entered the final 5 minutes, SA pressed forward a number of times and put some dangerous passes into the arc, however the ACT defence held firm to secure 5th spot for the ACT Strikers this year.

Photos: Hockey Australia, available here Queensland has been crowned the 2012 men’s Australian Hockey League Champions after defeating Western Australia 3-2 in the Grand Final at the National Hockey Centre in Canberra.

The best of Australian men’s hockey talent was on display in the Grand-Final of the Australian Hockey League when the Queensland outlasted 2011 AHL Champions Western Australia. In an exciting game between two masterful attacking teams, Queensland was dominant in the first half and led 2-1 at half time. At the post-final presentations, Queensland’s Matthew Swann was voted Player of the Final.

In the classification matches, the early morning game saw Tasmania finish 7th when they responded positively to their indifferent play-off performance to defeat a gallant South Australia 4-1. Northern Territory turned the tables on the more fancied ACT to win 2-1 to claim fifth position and relegate the ACT to sixth. In the play-off for bronze, Victoria overcame the New South Wales relentless pressure to score three late goals to win 3-1, after NSW had a deserved 1-0 lead at half time. At the conclusion of the championship, NSW’s Simon Orchard was voted Player of the Tournament.

Grand-Final Queensland 3 def Western Australia 2 (2-1 half time) Goals- QLD: Dylan Wotherspoon (12m FG), Jamie Dwyer (26m FG), Kane Posselt (50m FG) WA: Craig Boyne (26m FG), Chris Bausor (50m PS) 7th v 8th Play-off Tasmania 4 def South Australia 1 (2-0 half time) Goals - TAS: Adam Clifford (17m FG), Luke Doerner (35m PC), Nick Budgeon (56m PC), Eddie Ockenden (70m FG) SA: Cameron Joyce (66m PC)

In the first game of the day, the Tassie Tigers and SA HotShots had the invidious honour of opening the final day’s proceedings. The penalty for their loss in the play-offs to their less-vaunted opponents was a warm-up on a cool Canberra morning in preparation for their classification match for 7th and 8th position. Tasmania dominated from the opening whistle and gained their first corner in the 6th minute. The normally reliable Luke Doerner’s shot was well-saved on the line and cleared by SA’s Scott Hughes. As the game settled down, the HotShots were guilty of ball watching and relied on Hughes and Glyn Tamlin to resist their opponents who continued to pepper the SA defence. Their efforts were in vain and in the 17th minute, a quick pass found Tigers’ captain Eddie Ockenden in space. He ran to the left side of the circle, drew the defence and sent a flat pass to an unmarked Adam Clifford who put away the goal. SA responded with attacking pressure but their efforts were turned away as Nick Budgeon, David Guest and Luke Doerner remained resilient. As the first half drew to a close, a rash SA clearance gifted Tasmania a penalty corner which they willingly accepted and this time, Doerner made no mistake to give his team a 2-0 lead at the break.

Tasmania maintained their pressure in the second stanza with the intimidating presence of Tasmania’s dynamic midfield duo of Doerner and Tim Deavin commanding in both attack and defence and controlling the momentum of the play. SA had little chance to settle and after quick work by Geoff Cock and Deavin after about twenty minutes, they earned a penalty corner, which Budgeon converted. Tasmania was safe and their intensity dropped off to give the Hotshots opportunities to attack. A rare incursion into the Tigers’ circle forced a penalty corner which their youthful defender Cameron Joyce adeptly accepted to give his team some respectability. Then with seconds to go, the bounce from a toss after a Tigers’ 16-yard hit eluded the SA defenders only to land in space for the lurking Ockenden. Controlling the ball adroitly, the Tassie captain moved across the circle, drew the goalkeeper and slammed the ball into the net, giving his team a deserved 4-1 victory and consigning SA to the role of custodians of the wooden spoon for 2012.
