Premier League Hockey Update by Paul Finnie Ladies: Port Adelaide’s ladies were expected to stroll past lowly Forestville, but the match was harder-fought than many would have predicted, Leah Welstead’s brace of goals being largely responsible for Port getting the points with a 3-1 win. Alison Pennington scored two in Adelaide’s 3-0 drubbing away to Seacliff. Megan Opie and Tess Reynolds continued their red-hot goal-scoring form with two each as Burnside re-asserted itself with a 6-0 thumping of North East, while Uni kept itself in the mix for finals with a 4-1 defeat of Grange Royals continuing the Sea Eagles season of misery. Men: The clash between Port (1st) and Forestville (3rd) was eagerly anticipated, with both sides missing key players (Port Craig Victory, Michael Lubcke and Andrew Searle, the Panthers in-form goalie Poon-ee Khut, Tyson Schubert and Joel Langley) it was going to be a test of playing depth. Ev Boland scored a cracking first time volley to open the scoring for Port, who raced away with the match in a scintillating display of team hockey to continue the Panthers recent form slump with a 9-2 win, Boland and Cameron Joyce both scoring hat tricks. The goal feast continued in the 6-6 draw between finals contenders Seacliff and Adelaide on the sand at Seacliff, Ruben Wyld leading the scorers with 3. Veteran Andy Thomas scored 2 in improved-Uni’s 5-1 defeat of Grange Royals. Burnside went 1 down early through a series of defensive errors in their crunch match against North East, but showed great resilience and continued resurrecting their season with a gritty 3-2 upset win in an entertaining affair. North East had a chance to take what may have been a decisive 3-1 lead but hit the post from a penalty stroke opportunity, Burnside’s Mitchell Browne proving a handful up front for the North Zulu defence to handle scoring two cracking field goals. Adelaide v Burnside and Seacliff v Uni are the most enticing match-ups this weekend in the men’s comp, with all matches critical to the finals race, while in the ladies Adelaide v Burnside shapes as a hard-fought affair.
