National Under 21 Championships update - Day 7

SA women to play finals on Friday. Hockey SA’s Women’s under 21 state team will play Queensland on Friday at 3pm for a berth in the grand final. In an upset result this afternoon, previously winless Tasmania defeated Queensland 1-0 denying the sunshine state team top spot at the end of the pool matches. Third placed SA today were defeated by a buoyant NSW who claimed top spot with their 2-0 victory over the local team in their National Championships day 7 match at the South Australian State Hockey Centre, Gepps Cross this morning. NSW scored a field goal at the 12 minute mark of the second half and followed this up by converting a penalty corner after the final siren. SA missed the injured Emily Grist while a couple of other players were only played spasmodically. Best for SA were Karri McMahon, Georgina Hollitt and Tiarna Gordon. The points table after Day 7 is: NSW 18; Qld 16; SA 14; ACT 11; WA 9; Vic 4; NT4; Tas 4.

Finals matches for Friday are as follows:

9:00AM WA vs TAS (5 v 8)

11:00AM VIC vs NT (6 v 7)

1:00PM NSW vs ACT (1 v 4)

3:00PM QLD vs SA (2 v 3)

Day 7 matches from the National Men’s Under 21 Championships played in Hobart today saw SA 2 defeat NT 2-0 and grab 6th position after the final pool matches. Cameron Joyce converted two penalty corners for SA. Best for SA were Daniel Mitchell, Ben Craig and team captain Scott Germein.

The points table after Day 7 is: Qld 17; NSW 16; WA 15; TAS 8; Vic 7; SA 6; NT 5; ACT 5.

SA plays NT again at 11am AEST on Friday morning for a chance to finish 5th overall.

State Team Selections Congratulations Brigette Belton who has been selected as a train on player in the under 13G state team. The boys and girls teams can be viewed on the hockey SA website.

Junior Quiz Night

The Club will be having the annual Quiz Night on Saturday 28th July, starting at 7.00 PM. This is a major Junior Fundraising event and will enable us to provided extra equipment, facilities and opportunities for our young members. Last year’s very successful event was made possible by the efforts of our members. We are looking for all Club Members to assist again this year by seeking donations of goods to be used as prizes.

The value of the goods does not matter; even a $5 gift voucher or item can be added to a hamper to create a sensational prize. All donations will be noted and the donor will be listed as an event sponsor, with advertising displayed on the night. Approach this as a chance for your prospective donor to have an opportunity to promote their business to a captive audience, who will appreciate their support.

The approach is easy -

“My club, The Port Adelaide District Hockey Club, is running a quiz night as a JUNIOR FUND RAISER, and we were hoping you would support this event with a donation of goods or services. We will take your company’s web site image or business card image and display it throughout the night with a slide show.”

No attempt, no result. No excuses. Please contact me if you have any queries or with details of donations.

Gary Szkolik, Vice President - Juniors 0433 995 823 [email protected]

London 2012 Hockey competition schedule announced The London 2012 Olympic Hockey competition schedule has been confirmed today, revealing when teams will play each other in the preliminary rounds of the men's and women's tournaments. The first match at the Riverbank Arena will see Australia’s women take on New Zealand on 29 July, while Great Britain's women’s first match will be against Japan. See the full details of the women's competition. In the men’s competition, the current Olympic champions Germany start their tournament against Belgium, while Great Britain’s first match will be against Argentina. See the full details of the men's competition.

Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport at the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: 'The Riverbank

Arena is set to stage exciting world-class sport during the Olympic Games. The Visa International

Invitational Hockey Tournament helped us test the venue and we will continue to work with the

International Hockey Federation to fine-tune our plans before the first Olympic match takes place on

the distinctive blue and pink pitches.'

Competition format

The 12 teams in each tournament have been divided into two pools of six based on world rankings,

and each team will play every other team in their pool. The top two teams in each pool will qualify

for the semi-finals, with the winners of those matches going head-to-head for the gold medal. The

other teams in the two groups play each other to determine final placings.
