Senior Men’s Report

It’s a tough life out Port Adelaide way. There is black and there is white and no shade in between. In 2011 the PLM started slowly and finished strongly only to fall at the final hurdle. The M1M started well and fell away towards the end. A sense of unfinished business pervades our pre-season efforts. This year we welcome to the group John Haynes as Metro 1 Coach. There is no doubt about John’s hockey pedigree we will just need to get some “dirt” on him as the season progresses. The Adelaide games will now have extra spice – as if they needed it. Becks goes to PL manager. Fortunately John Stephen had already organised the PL group so Becks just has to learn a few additional Excel macros to maintain the order of things. Jodie Barrat joins us as the M1 manager. Chainy and Finnie continue as our coaches. Any idle observer would note that this is indeed a good team. As had been our practice over recent times pre-season is pretty much open to anyone and we take great delight in inviting out a few of our “young fellows” to show them the ropes. This year was no exception with the likes of Ben Main, Alby and Billy Robbins mixing it up with the big boys. Whilst having a range of skills out at training might detract from the overall standard we reckon the benefits far outweigh this.

The squad remains extremely stable Andrew Searle – highest goal scorer in PL last year is looking for new challenges and is a welcome addition to our group. Has picked up Plugger’s old number so let’s hope that is an omen. A couple of points for this weekends PL game:

1. Andrew Searle is playing his first game for the club. We are excited about what he brings to the group and look forward to him adding to the goal scoring power of our exciting strike line.

2. Allen Jamba is playing his last game for the Magpies for a while as he is returning to Bowral with work. We will definitely miss his cool head and soft hands and we wish him well and hope to see him in the Black & White again some time in the future. The guys have been very fortunate to play with a man of his calibre.

It has been a long pre-season, but a rewarding one to date and I am looking forward to the season ahead. Beck’s & Chainy

Senior Women’s Report

Dale, Matt and myself have been extremely satisfied with the first phase of 2012, that being pre-season. There has been a considerable emphasis on fitness, skill development and game play simulation as well as team and club culture and ethic. We have attempted to install into players the importance of being present at training and doing an alternative program if carrying a soft tissue injury, doing rehab or on a modified program. The number of players at pre-season was very encouraging and we now look forward to the season proper. It was particularly pleasing to see a number of young girls at pre-season and I hope they have prospered from the experience. A special welcome to Tessa and Chloe Leary from Tasmania and Kelsy Dyer from Port Lincoln. They have all fitted in extremely well. Ash Fechner returns after nearly a 12 months absence, Kimberley Hughes from injury and Kim Meldrum from the birth of second daughter Indie. Bronte Pickett also returns on a modified program and stalwarts in Maggi Schiller and Bec Anderson have put their hand up for selection in the top grades. I would still encourage those who believe their fitness levels are down on what they should be to take a proactive approach and do some additional work in their spare time. To me it is quite simple. The fitter you are the more benefit you are to the team and more rewarding it becomes to you individually. From a skill development perspective it is critical that we do not full behind other clubs in this area.

The game of hockey continues to evolve in regard to skill and it is important that we as coaches and the players themselves identify areas for improvement and work on them. We must master our basics first but at the same develop some of the more advanced skills and moves. With numbers the best they have been for sometime and with Premier League playing three rounds before the season gets under way in full teams are far from settled. Added to this is the complexity of the State U18 Girls being away for rounds 3 and 4 and some long term injuries to a couple of players. I would envisage that teams will not be settled until the return of the U18s. Even then and with an increase in depth, form and competition for places will underpin team selections. Some players will ultimately be disappointed if not selected first up but the motivation and challenge should be to strive to put pressure on players above them. We have spoken very little about our team goals for 2012. Our main focus has been on round one and we look forward to our first competitive hit out this week. TC

URGENTLY WANTED – CANTEEN MANAGERS We are still looking for at least one but preferably two people who are interested in joining our current canteen managers. Very basically the role of the manager is the preparation & cooking of the hot food and generally supervise/provide assistance to the rostered team helpers. It is not difficult to make hamburgers etc. and is quite enjoyable with the company of the rostered players. Training is provided and there is some remuneration. Rosters are worked around your other commitments. It would be preferable to have people who don’t play hockey as it makes it easier to roster & find fill-ins at short notice should someone fall ill. At present we do not have enough people to run the canteen for the season and if this continues then it may be a case of NO MANAGER - NO HOT FOOD! If you know of anyone or if you are interested please give me a call and I can answer all the questions you may have. Remember – many hands make light work. If everyone said ‘someone else will do it, then no one would do it’. We would then not have a hockey club to play for let alone a canteen which provides great food! Thursday Night Dinners 2012 Schnitzels, salad and chips will be available after u9, u 11 and u 13 training on Thursday nights from the 29th of March. Meals will be cooked from 6.15 pm with orders closing at 7pm. We are still looking for parents/players who are interested in helping with Senior dinners from 7.00pm onwards. We would love to put together some kind of roster so that the same people don’t have to be out every week. If you are interested in being on this roster or if you are able to help please contact [email protected]

Bar and canteen price increases Due to increases from our suppliers, the club has had to make a small increase in some of the bar and canteen prices. This is the first increase in two years. These new prices are now in effect. Summer Hockey Three PADHC teams were fielded in the mixed metro summer competition. The Port Ninjas played prior to the Christmas break while the Mad Pies and Simon Says played from November through till March with a six week lay-off during summer school holidays. All teams fielded strong sides with a full substitute bench. The teams were a mix of women, men and teenage players who improved markedly over the course of the competition. Thanks to all volunteers, supporters and players who participated in the series. Dave Kirner

Bar stools The club is looking for some bar stools to be used with the new outside high tables & barrels organised by Ian Haley. If anyone has any contacts that could assist with this please contact [email protected]

Social Events in 2012 In an effort to encourage participation and engage more of our members we are asking for the respective sections of the club to take an active role in planning social functions in 2012. The below teams/sections of the club will each be responsible for the organisation of one night with the assistance of the committee and we ask that a minimum of two representatives put their hands up to be the leaders of these events with the help of the committee. Event leaders are sought from the following groups-

· Premier League/Metro 1 Women: Rep: Sarah Stephen & Emma Dean · Premier League/Metro 1 Men: Reps: David Reid & Paul Finnie · Metro 2-6 Men: Evert Siemelink, Mark Wickmann, Paul Anderson · Metro 2-4 Women: Rep: Tammie Wightman · Veterans Men and Women

Each section now has the opportunity to pick a date to hold their function. It will be desirable to have at least 3 weeks between functions and this will be treated on a first come first serve basis. The committee will offer assistance in organising the night and purchasing food/decorations and publication of the event.

The group that organises the “Best overall function” as judged by the committee will receive a

special bar tab for grand final night.
