Premier League Hockey Update by Paul Finnie In midweek girls fixtures to make up round 14, Burnside thumped Grange Royals 7-1, skipper Jane Claxton and striker Tess Reynolds scoring twice each in the demolition. Uni and Adelaide ladies played a 2-2 draw out in a result that doesn’t assist either side’s finals chances, while in-form Woodville saw off a plucky Forestville 2-1. In the corresponding men’s fixtures, Maarten Hanrath’s hat trick was in vain as Uni lost to Adelaide 5-3. Burnside continued their improved form with a 5-2 win over Grange Royals, with five individual goal scorers highlighting a good team effort. Forestville bounced back from their shock loss to Uni with a 6-2 drubbing of Woodville, Dion Button and Tyson Schubert both scoring twice. In round 15, Adelaide Uni travelled to North East on Saturday afternoon. In the girl’s match, what looked to be a 0-0 draw was brought to life with Uni scoring a field goal with the final whistle not far away, but North East earnt a penalty corner after time, and as has happened several times this season, converted from a seemingly well-rehearsed set-play to share the honours, in a match Uni went into as red-hot favourites after their 6-0 drubbing of the Zuluettes last time around. After the match some over-zealous officiating saw Uni’s Anastasia Tomeo double yellow/red carded over an innocuous frustrated stick-throw. The men’s fixture always promised to be an interesting affair, with North East still missing several key players and uni buoyed by a recent win against high-flying Forestville. North East scored relatively early through a well-executed field goal, but Uni had several good chances to score despite absorbing a large amount of pressure. The pressure told when North East converted a short corner to go 2 up, but Uni brought one back before the break to go into the second half with renewed hope. An off the ball indiscretion in Uni’s defensive circle by Ross Fitzgerald saw North East restore their 2 goal buffer, and despite Uni pressing hard and creating their own chances to get back in the game, the class of Will Telfer in the mid-field was a key factor in North East earning full points. Seacliff raced to a 4-0 lead over Grange Royals at half time, creating numerous chances, but some good work from Joshua Gloede in the Royals goals going a long way towards the score being restricted to 5-2, while the ladies shared the points 2-2. On Sunday, Burnside’s ladies ran rampant against lowly Forestville, with in-form Tess Reynolds slotting in three, ably supported by Jane Claxton and Megan Opie with two apiece. The much-anticipated clash between Port and Woodville’s girls saw Woodville’s pre-match optimism dashed by a switched-on Port unit, who played a disciplined team game to triumph 4-2. The Forestville men’s momentum has hit a hurdle with their second loss in as many weeks to less-vaunted opponents, Burnside’s 2-0 win being their best result for the season and a sign of their improved form.

Port’s men, despite having key players Andrew Searle, Michael Lubcke and Craig Victory out through injury, carved out a serviceable 8-3 win against Woodville who were also missing key players Dave Francis and John Gibson, Cameron Joyce slotting a hat trick of goals to maintain his lead in the goal scorers for the men with 24 goals for the season (from Geoff Mills on 20). Tess Reynolds (Burnside) on 14 goals leads from Katie Pisani (Woodville) and Burnside team-mate Megan Opie on 11 apiece in the girls leading scorers. The clash between top-two contenders Forestville and Port Adelaide men this coming Saturday at the State hockey centre is the standout fixture for round 16.
