Premier League Hockey Update by Paul Finnie Adelaide’s women ensured the results between the top three sides thus far in the ladies comp were shared in the first round with a 2-0 win against form side Burnside, Sara Stuart and Tara Allister getting on the board. The men’s game also saw the Peas triumph, Josh Gould’s goal proving the sole difference in a tight battle as Burnside’s season of woe continues. Predictions of a thrashing proved to be ill-founded as the Magpie men struggled to a 1-0 lead at the break against the plucky Grange Royals young bloods, before the flood gates opened and Port took more of their opportunities to triumph 6-1 (Ev Boland, Cameron Joyce and Tom Fitzgerald scoring a brace of goals each, Fitzgerald’s game having gone to a new level to be one of the form players of the comp this season, Boland and Beau Aliskauskas also being good contributors for the Pies). In the ladies fixture, Port surged to a 3-0 lead at half-time, and that’s how it remained after a second half the Port coach Trevor Cibich labelled “uninspiring”, Port’s best being Carly Simms, Sarah Stephen and Courtney Rudd, goals shared between Chantal Nel-Beckmann, Jessica Cibich, and Leah Welstead. The North East ladies put in an insipid effort in a battle between two sides who could be contending for a finals berth, to be thrashed 6-0 by a rampant Woodville outfit, Belinda White with 2 goals being the leading scorer on the park. Unfortunately for the men from Pennington the Zulu’s ran rampant to knock in 8 goals, with Pete Redding scoring their consolation goal, Rodney Thorpe getting a hat trick and Ryan O’Shea scoring twice for the Zulu’s. At a frigid West Beach on Sunday, Uni’s girls scored a vital 3-0 win against Seacliff, with goals shared, while in the men, Uni had the better of a dour first half and deserved their 1-0 lead at the break. However, Seacliff came out more aggressively with a full-field press in the second stanza, scoring from two corners and creating numerous chances to finish 2-1 victors, in game marred by numerous disciplinary breaches and corresponding cards. Glyn Tamlyn, Matt McGregor and Ross Fitzgerald were the best players on the field. All games saw a minutes silence and players wearing black armbands as the hockey community mourned the passing of Perth’s Lizzie Watkins last weekend in a tragic on-field accident.

Club TV repair If any club members are expert in TV fine tuning or repairs please speak to Dave Kirner or Chris Abineri. The club TV has a grey half screen tone running through it that we are trying to fix.

Black and White Day- call for help Saturday May 26th is Black and White Day. This encompasses sponsors, life members, past-players day. Once a year we host an afternoon tea to recognise the contribution of life members, sponsors and past players. We are looking for a few club members to help out myself and the rest of the committee by providing a dish for the life members afternoon tea. We will require savoury dishes (sandwiches, sausage rolls, quiches etc) and sweet dishes (cakes, slices etc). In addition to afternoon tea we are looking for volunteers who may be able to assist in cooking counter meals from around 7pm. It’s not a difficult job but does require a few people to lighten the burden. Please contact [email protected] if you are able to assist. If any club members have access to a marquee or shelter that can be used to host the life members afternoon tea on May 26th please contact [email protected]
