Magnetic Resonance Imaging, also known as MRI, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure which uses extremely strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of organs and structures within the human body without radiation as used in x-rays. The MRI technologist prepares and positions the patient for the exam, operates the MRI equipment, and records the digital images for review by physicians and other healthcare professionals. Employment opportunities may be full-time or part-time. Entry level salaries vary depending upon the facility and the individuals experience. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING A few facts about our MRI program: Advanced Technical Certificate available for applicants with previous degrees in specific healthcare specialties. A class of eight (8) students is selected via a point ranking system. The program begins in May each year. Seventy-one credit hour curriculum leading to an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences. Graduates of the Associate Degree and Certificate curricula are eligible to take the national registry examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) for the Registered Magnetic Resonance Technologist RT-(MR) (ARRT) professional credential.

Apply for college admission either online or in person at the El Centro College Registrars Office or at one of the Registrar/Admissions Offices at any Dallas County Community college. Speak with an academic advisor in regard to any assessment testing needed for placement and registration into your basic courses such as English, algebra, anatomy, etc. or any developmental courses as needed to prepare you for college level coursework. First time college student?

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Request an Educational Plan from the Health Occupations Admissions Office to evaluate your previous coursework for possible transfer toward a health occupations program. Are you new to El Centro but have coursework from colleges (other than Dallas County Community colleges)? Apply for college admission either online or in person at the El Centro College Registrars Office or at one of the Registrar/Admissions Offices at any Dallas County Community college. Submit all official transcripts to the El Centro College Registrar/Admissions Office or at another Dallas County Community college. Consult an academic advisor in regard to any assessment testing you may need for registration.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING The Educational Plan Request form is found on the blue Resources for Potential Applicants link at: www.ElCentroCollege.edu/HealthOccAdmissions. www.ElCentroCollege.edu/HealthOccAdmissions What is an Educational Plan? The educational plan is an unofficial degree plan listing the courses you have completed (including transferred courses) toward the program. Educational plans are not necessary if you have attended only Dallas County Community colleges. The educational plan is usually processed within 2-3 weeks of submission; however, during peak times the process may take up to one month to complete. We suggest that you request an educational plan at least one semester prior to an application deadline.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING MRI Core Curriculum Associate Degree Applicants to the MRI program complete 42 credit hours of prerequisite courses referred to as the MRI Core Curriculum. The Core includes courses required for all Associate Degrees in addition to courses needed for a foundation in healthcare programs. A minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average on the Core is required to apply to the program. ENGL 1301PSYC 2301 MATH 1314 or MATH 1414HPRS 1204 * SCIT 1407 or BIOL 2401 *HPRS 2210 SCIT 1408 or BIOL 2402 *HPRS 2201 PHYS 1401HPRS 2231 PHYS 1402HPRS 2300 SPCH 1311 or 1321Humanities elective * * Science courses (SCIT 1407 /BIOL 2401, SCIT 1408/BIOL 2402, PHYS 1401, and PHYS 1402) must be completed less than 5 years before the semester of anticipated program entry. BIOL 2401 has its own prerequisite which is BIOL 1406. HPRS 1204 must be completed less than 3 years before the semester of anticipated program entry. SCIT 1407 /BIOL 2401 is the prerequisite for HPRS 2201 and HPRS 2300. Select Humanities elective from the list of approved electives for a General Associate Degree. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Advanced Technical Certificate Required Courses To qualify as an applicant for the Advanced Technical Certificate, you must have earned an Associate or Bachelor Degree in one of these health care specialties and have a current registry or certification credential: Applicants to the Certificate program must have completed the following courses from the MRI Core Curriculum: ENGL 1301 * SPCH 1311 or 1321 * MATH 1314 or MATH 1414 Certificate applicants coursework must also show evidence of physics, human anatomy, and human physiology. Radiography (ARRT)Nuclear Medicine Radiation TherapyDiagnostic Medical Sonography * ENGL 1301 and SPCH 1311/1321 must have been completed at a U.S. college or university.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Regarding the Advanced Technical Certificate. Although a Certificate applicant is not required to complete the entire MRI Core Curriculum, their degree will be evaluated against the Core for equivalent coursework to calculate a similar grade point average to that of an Associate Degree applicant for ranking purposes. However, if a Certificate applicant does not have a equivalent course to one of the MRI Core courses such as HPRS 2231 for example, it will not count against their GPA in the ranking process. Certificate applicants are in competition with Associate Degree applicants. Therefore, they may choose to enroll in or repeat MRI Core coursework to improve their overall GPA for final ranking. An educational plan is especially useful in advising the Certificate applicant of their coursework being considered alongside an Associate Degree applicant.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING HESI A 2 ASSESSMENT TEST Reading Comprehension Grammar Vocabulary/General Knowledge Math Anatomy/Physiology The HESI A 2 is a timed, computerized test which usually takes 3-4 hours to complete. In order to apply to the program, applicants must score 70% or higher on each of the required sections of the test: The Personality Profile and Learning Styles sections of the HESI A 2 are also required but are not scored. Applicants should take the HESI A 2 after completing the MRI Core courses.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING HESI A 2 scores are valid for two (2) years from testing date to the date of anticipated program entry. The HESI A 2 can be taken at any testing site. Applicants are responsible for securing their own testing appointment and should schedule their test several weeks prior to the application deadline. There is no limit on the number of testing attempts for the HESI A 2. However, ALL FIVE REQUIRED SECTIONS of the test must be taken in each testing attempt and the score sheet submitted with your application must indicate a minimum score of 70 on each section to be valid. (The Personality Profile and Learning Styles sections may be submitted from any previous testing attempt.) A HESI A 2 Study Guide is available at most bookstores. A HESI A 2 Prep course is also offered by the El Centro College Continuing Education Division. Contact them at 214-860-2147 for more information.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING How do I sign up for my HESI A 2 test? Registration and payment for the HESI A 2 varies among testing sites. IMPORTANT NOTE: Testing sites other than the Paramount and Northlake College may not offer all the sections of the HESI A 2 that are required by our programs. Before you register and pay for the test, be sure the HESI A 2 at other testing sites has all the sections you need for program application! MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING What else will I need before I apply to the program? PHYSICAL EXAM All applicants must obtain a basic physical exam dated no more than one year before the program application deadline. The physical exam can be performed by their personal physician or at an immediate care clinic. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING What about immunizations? Applicants are required to present documentation of a current tuberculosis screening with their application materials. A chest x-ray exam is required if: The TB screen shows a positive result The applicant has had a history of positive TB screens The applicant has received the BCG inoculation The date of the tuberculosis screening (PPD skin test) must be less than one year before the anticipated program entry date.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING In addition, the following immunizations are also required: One dose of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) within the last 10 years (NOTE: A T/d booster without Pertussis is NOT accepted.) Two doses of varicella (chickenpox) at least one month apart (NOTE: A statement of disease history of chickenpox is NOT accepted.) Three doses of Hepatitis B on this recommended schedule: 1 st Dose 2 nd Dose one month after the 1 st dose 3 rd Dose five months after the 2 nd dose Two doses of measles (rubeola) and one dose each of mumps and rubella (Two doses of the MMR measles/mumps/rubella combination received at least one month apart will also meet this requirement.) MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING If your doctor is administering these immunizations, the date of the injection and the doctors signature must be indicated on that specific line on the immunization section of the physical exam form. IMPORTANT NOTE: A statement of immune by history of disease, dates of illness such as measles, chickenpox, mumps, etc., or a general statement of immune is not acceptable documentation for the immunizations required for application to the program.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING You may have separate records for some of your immunizations on a printout from a clinic or a card with childhood immunizations. You may submit a photocopy of that documentation attached with your physical exam form. These documents do not necessarily need a signature. See examples below.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING What if I cant find any of my immunization records? We can accept documentation of a blood tests known as a titers in lieu of these immunizations: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox) and Hepatitis B. Titer results are not accepted for Tdap. IMPORTANT! If a titer result does not indicate immunity, you must complete that specific immunization as required before submitting your application packet. Therefore, titers should be ordered at least six weeks prior to an application filing deadline. This would allow you to receive two injections at least one month apart for MMRs, or varicellas, or the first two Hepatitis B injections prior to the application deadline. Titer documentation must show positive immunity and/or numeric lab values.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING What CPR training do I need? CPR CERTIFICATION AT THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER level (sometimes known as BLS-Healthcare Provider) is also required for our programs. This training includes a hands-on check off procedure for one-man and two-man CPR for adults, children, and infants in addition to choking and the AED (portable defibrillator). This training also includes a written test, either online or with the hands-on check off. CPR classes are available through the El Centro College Continuing Education Division. NOTE: Online CPR training is not accepted for health occupations programs. A photocopy of your current CPR card must be submitted with your application materials and must not expire before the first day of program classes.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING What do I submit as my application packet? Compile these materials for your envelope: The completed MRI Application and signed Statement of Students Responsibility form HESI A 2 score sheet with Personality Profile and Learning Styles The completed physical exam form and immunization documentation Photocopy of your Healthcare Provider level CPR card Documentation of current health care experience (if applicable) A Checklist to help you gather your materials in found in the information packet.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING I have experience in healthcare. Is that considered? Applicants who have current health care related experience and hold a professional credential in that area may be awarded additional points toward the ranking process. This may include registered radiographers, sonographers, radiation therapists, nuclear medicine technologists, and licensed or certified health care professionals in other areas. To have that experience considered, the following documentation is needed: A photocopy of a certificate of completion, registry certification (i.e. ARRT, RDMS), or other credential documentation of the training; and A letter on original official hospital/facility letterhead signed by your current supervisor indicating employment dates and specific details of your role and duties dealing with direct patient care at that facility. NOTE: Experience is not reviewed or confirmed prior to program application and the decision to award points for experience rests solely with the MRI Program Coordinator.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING How are students notified of acceptance? All applicants to the May 2013 MRI program receive a notification email on May 1, 2013 informing them of their status. Students who receive an acceptance to the program must respond to the email within a specified timeframe to confirm their space in the class. Students who apply during the late application filing period, if selected, are notified via email on May 17, 2013. Applicants who are not offered acceptance to the program may re-apply for the next year. There is no waiting list for our health occupations programs.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING New MRI Student Registration/Orientation Prior to the start date of the MRI classes in May, newly accepted students to the program will meet for an orientation with the Program Coordinator at the Paramount Building. Health Occupations Admissions personnel will register the students for their MRI courses during the orientation. Health Occupations Admissions personnel will also formally assign the students to their MRI degree plans.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING At what hospitals would I do my clinical rotations? Clinical rotations will vary among selected Metroplex area clinical affiliates. Students are assigned to their specific clinical rotations and wear their official program scrub uniforms only during their clinical rotations. You can expect to be at three different clinical sites during the program. It is important to have reliable transportation to your clinical site as most sites are not on the DART system.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Criminal Background Checks / Drug Screen After acceptance to the program and before their first clinical rotation, students will undergo a criminal background check and drug screen as required by our hospital affiliates for all health occupations programs. Students will be responsible for this charge (approximately $86.00). All results of these screenings will become the property of the Health and Legal Studies Division and will not be released to the student or another third party. However, since the result of the background check and drug screen after acceptance may result in the student being dismissed from the program, potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact ARRT prior to applying to the program to determine their eligibility to take the registry exam. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING A Few Frequently Asked Questions. I have a full-time job. Can I work while Im in the MRI program? The MRI Core classes are offered day, evening, weekend and some online schedules; therefore, a potential applicant has the flexibility to work before they apply to the MRI program. After acceptance and starting the MRI courses themselves, many students do work part time and full time. The on-campus classes meet one day per week and the clinical rotations are a total of 20 hours per week, generally during the daytime hours and on weekdays. However, there may be evening or weekend clinical rotations available on a limited basis. The MRI program will endeavor to accommodate a students work schedule if at possible when assigning their clinical rotations. MRI students are not paid while doing their clinical rotations.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) I earned a C in my English course several years ago. I would like to repeat it to earn a higher grade. Which grade will be used for my grade point average and will repeating the course count against my application? You may certainly repeat a course; the last grade earned will be the grade of record. (Ws or withdrawals from the course do not count in grade point average calculation.) Please note, however, that if you earn a grade of D or F in your second attempt in the course, THAT will be the grade of record and we will not honor the C you earned in your first attempt. Repeating a course to earn a higher grade does not count against your application as long as you complete the course with a C or higher on your last attempt.

A grade point average is calculated by dividing the number of total grade points earned in a group of courses by the total number of credit hours those courses are worth. Although El Centro College does not have reserved parking for students, staff, or visitors, parking is available at meters and various lots adjacent to the Paramount Building. The average cost of parking per day is $3 - $5. We are conveniently located near the West End DART Rail Station and the West Bus Transfer Center. Students who are enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours in Fall or Spring semesters, or 3 credit hours in Summer are eligible for a FREE DART PASS for that semester! MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) I dont have a Social Security Number. Can I still apply to the MRI program? A Social Security Number (SSN) is not required to apply to the MRI program. However, many of our hospitals and clinical affiliates require students to have an SSN in order to perform their clinical assignments at that facility. Therefore, clinical opportunities may be limited for students without an SSN. Although an SSN is not required to take the registry exam from ARRT, the application for licensure in the state of Texas through the Texas Department of Health Services does requires an SSN. Therefore, students who are accepted to the MRI program are strongly encouraged to contact the El Centro College International Center for information on obtaining an SSN well in advance of graduation from the program. IMPORTANT NOTE: Should a clinical opportunity not be available for a student who has no SSN, the student may not be eligible to continue in the MRI program.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) Do I need healthcare insurance while I am in the MRI program? Proof of coverage is not required to apply to the MRI program. However, if you are currently covered by a personal health care insurance policy, we encourage you to include a photocopy of that documentation with your application materials. If you are accepted to the MRI program and did not include your insurance documentation with your application materials, you must submit proof of personal health insurance coverage prior to registration for your clinical rotations in your first fall semester of the program. Please note that personal healthcare insurance is not the same as the fee for student liability insurance coverage which is paid in conjunction with your tuition.
