COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to visual thinking: principles of visual organization and perception. Students

will learn how to incorporate the* Elements of design to create interesting and dynamic images. By learning these elements you will

be better suited for understanding composition and the medium of photography and mixed media.. * You will also learn about &

how to use a 35mm SLR Camera in addition to materials and equipment used in photography. *You will be encouraged to be

creative, become multi-disciplinary in art making and open your mind to different ideas. This class will teach you to utilize the

elements and principles of art to develop your art portfolio while solving design problems creatively.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Grading Scale Academic/Effort

Demonstrate an understanding of basic elements & principles of design. Learn a vocabulary of art/photography terminology. Learn how to use studio materials/ equipment. Learn to resolve design problems creatively. Learn how to develop film and enlarge photographs. Learn how to discuss and describe different kinds of photography. Learn to give and receive constructive criticism. Incorporate digital technology in a creative manner (Smart Phone App’s (SnapSeed), Adobe PhotoShop)

Classroom Expectations 1. Show Respect to classmates, classroom and teacher. 2. NO EATING!!! (only bottle of H2O or enclosed capped drinks) 3. Passes only for emergencies (PLEASE DON’T BEG) 4. CLEAN UP after yourselves!!! 5. Avoid loud outbursts and inappropriate language. 6. Complete assignments by assigned due dates. Late work will be graded at teachers discretion. 7. DO YOUR BEST! Course Requirements for 6TH, 7TH & 8TH GRADE (unless students have already purchased last year):

-(1) 1” Hard cover 3 ring binder with plastic sheets and lined paper for written work. (ONLY FOR PHOTOGRAPHY). - All students must have a 35mm SLR film camera (in working order and a set of spare batteries). - A bounded sketchbook (please avoid the spiral type or sketch pads) no larger than 8.5x11. - (5) rolls of Kodak TRI-X 400 (24 or 36 exposures) Available at Pitman Photo Supply or online (BH PHOTO VIDEO) - (1) box of Illford RC paper 50 to 100 count. - A digital camera w/memory card) or smart phone with an 8 or more-megapixel count. - (2) USB Drive 8GB or higher (only used for Photography for transferring images for print and digital portfolio) 2nd is for backup - Course fee $55 per semester (to be paid online).
