Students must meet Millikan ‘s residential requirements or secure a Charter Lottery seat. Transportation is not provided with this program. In the spring of 6th and 7th grade, students are expected to audition for or submit portfolios to teachers so that they may be considered for more advanced elective and dance classes for their 7th and 8th grade years. Performances are primarily in Burrill Hall in the evenings and on Saturdays.

Drama: Intro, Lab, and Production Costume Design Stage Design Musical Theatre Workshop Band: Concert, Jazz Strings Percussion Ensemble Drums Choir: Intro, Chamber, and Advanced Students are placed in classes in 7th and 8th grade either by audition/portfolio or at teacher discretion.

Cultural, Intermediate and Advanced Modern Dance

   

6th grade is a foundational year. Performances are primarily in-class with selected opportunities for performance in front of an audience.

Drama Choir Orchestra * Band *

Dance requirements: Performing Arts Magnet and Performing Arts Academy students will take dance in order to meet their P.E. requirement. Performing Arts Magnet students will take a semester of cultural dance and one semester of modern dance. Performing Arts Academy students will take a yearlong class of cultural or studio dance. *At the discretion of the director, 6th grade students with advanced instrumental music training may be placed in an advanced instrumental class.

Performing Arts Academy Application and Assessments

The Performing Arts Academy application requires: • submission of standardized test scores • submission of grades • an audition

o vocal/dance/acting

• Prepare and present a one-minute memorized

monologue • Prepare and present an age-appropriate one-minute

classical or Broadway song selection with at least an octave range. Students may sing acapella or bring pre-recorded instrumental music (without vocal) accompaniment. Students may be asked to sing simple scales

• Students will be taught a dance combination

OR

o instrumental music • Prepare and present a one-minute performance on the

desired instrument • Prepare and present scales or other exercises that

demonstrate proficiency • Sight-reading or music analysis may be requested

Students must have completed a Performing Arts Academy application in order to schedule an assessment. Note: Piano and guitar lessons are NOT offered at Millikan. Advanced guitarists may have opportunities to perform in Jazz homeroom; advanced pianists may have opportunities to perform in Percussion or Jazz homeroom.
