What is MagiZinc®?MagiZinc® is a new metallic coating applied tothe steel in a continuous hot dip galvanisingprocess. The Zinc-based coating incorporatesMagnesium and Aluminium.

MagiZinc® consists of pure Zinc crystalssurrounded by MgZn2 /Zn and Al. When thesurface is exposed, an oxide layer is formed onthe metallic coating surface that forms astable barrier and reduces the rate ofcorrosion.

MagiZinc® is an innovative Zinc-based metallic coating withadditions of Magnesium (Mg) andAluminium (Al) and is availablewith both Colorcoat® PE 15 (pre-finished steel for internalapplications) and Colorcoat® PE 25(pre-finished steel for externalapplications).

These products benefit from theexcellent corrosion protection ofMagiZinc® and offer a substantialand sustained contribution to theenvironment due to the reductionof Zinc used in manufacturing.

After the successful introductionof unpainted MagiZinc®, Tata Steelcompleted the development ofpainted products on theMagiZinc® coating.

Through Research andDevelopment work, Colorcoat® PE15 and Colorcoat® PE 25 havebeen developed to give anoptimal performance with theMagiZinc® coating.

Unpainted MagiZinc®The MagiZinc® coating is used for variousinternal applications like ventilation systems,cable trays, metal shelving and liner trays.

Colorcoat® PE 15 This product, which is used for internalapplications, is generally supplied in whitetints to ensure light reflectivity giving areduction in lighting costs.

Colorcoat® PE 25 An economic product suitable for externalbuilding cladding particularly in non-aggressive environments.

To ensure the integrity ofColorcoat® products, Tata Steeluses comprehensive laboratoryand outdoor tests to validateproduct performance. Tata Steelhas 50 years experience in thedevelopment and manufacture ofpre-finished steel. Our experienceand expertise allow us tounderstand the performance ofnew products in comparison withexisting products.

All product testing is carried out inaccredited laboratories tointernational standards and isdone both internally andexternally with independentauthorities.

Laboratory testing The products have been tested in a largenumber of accelerated tests. The testprogramme includes tests under extremeconditions to allow judgement ofperformance of the products in real lifeconditions.

Outdoor exposureColorcoat® PE 25 was subjected to 2 yearsoutdoor exposure at ECCA accredited testsites. Outdoor exposure tests give valuableinformation about performance in real lifeconditions.

Building components in useSince the launch in summer 2009 Colorcoat®PE 15 and Colorcoat® PE 25 with MagiZinc®have been widely applied in numerousbuilding products, such as profiles, panels,roof tiles and flashings.

PerformanceThe comprehensive testing programmeconfirms that the performance of Colorcoat®PE 15 and Colorcoat® PE 25 with MagiZinc® isat least equal to Z275 based products, withbetter cut edge protection and reduced risk ofwhite rust as tested in salt spray testing.

Official Independent CertificationColorcoat® PE 15, Colorcoat® PE 25 andColorcoat® PVDF have been subjected torigorous independent testing by theUniversity of Karlsruhe in Germany.

Following the extensive test programme, theDIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik) hasissued Zulassung (Approval Z-30.11-36) forbuilding applications corrosion class 3 forColorcoat® PE 25 on 140gr/m2 MagiZinc® andcorrosion class 2 for Colorcoat® PE 15 on100gr/m2 MagiZinc®. Currently Colorcoat®PVDF on MagiZinc® is also approved by DIBt.

Furthermore these products are also certifiedby many other national building bodies suchas CSTB in France, Sintef in Norway, and ITB inPoland. Copies of the approval and testreports are available on request.
