RISING RUPEE IS IT GOOD OR BAD

FOR INDIA?

Indian economy is on an upward swing. Dollars arepouring into India. Net investments by foreigninstitutional investors (FIIs) were $10.16 billionduring January-June 2007. This is more than the$8 billion recorded in the whole of 2006. The FIIsare chasing Indian stocks and taking the marketsto what many feel are levels of irrationalexuberance. The bellwether Bombay StockExchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) is 19,738on December 5 against 12,455 on April 2.

The foreign direct investment (FDI) numbers areequally impressive. In 2006-07, FDI inflowstouched $19.53 billion, a 153% increase over theprevious year. (This figure includes private equityand also $3.5 billion in reinvested earnings.) Thegovernment is looking at a target of $30 billion in2007-08. Foreign exchange reserves stood at$214.84 billion on July 6. This is a far cry from $5.8billion in the dire days of March 1991, when Indiahad to pledge its gold to stave off a default crisis.

External commercial borrowings of CorporateIndia were $12.1 billion in April-December 2006,an increase of 33%. Remittances from Indianworkers abroad - principally in the Gulf - rose 15%to $19.6 billion in the same period. And non-resident Indian (NRI) deposits, attracted by betterinterest rates, were also up 35% in 2006-07 totouch $3.8 billion. These foreign exchange inflows

have pushed the exchange rate to around Rs 40 tothe dollar. The rupee has risen nearly 10% againstthe dollar this year. It has appreciated more than14% from a low of 47.04 in July 2006.

This story may look like a fairy tale to some but ithas also caused the rupee to appreciate againstU.S dollar. Once traded at 47 or 48, the rupee nowhovers at 40 to the dollar. Observers call it thefastest appreciation of the Indian currency in threedecades. This has hit IT companies - the poster-boys of India's economic liberalization heavily. They have been unable to meet their forecastedquarterly earnings. Their shares have been beatendown on the bourses, even as the markets arehitting new peaks. The rising rupee is having alarge impact on Indian exports and it can erode itscompetitiveness in the global market. Companiessuch as Infosys and Wipro that rely heavily on theU.S. market are clearly hurting, but it is actuallythe smaller companies - garment exporters, auto-part suppliers, consumer durables, food and foodprocessing, gems and jewelry, textiles, handicrafts, and metal and metal products – that are fightingthe torment. Many of them had banked on theappreciation of dollar after signing a contract.Countries such as China are trying to takeadvantage of the situation and continuouslysuppressing the value of their currencies.

Reserve Bank and the Finance Ministry are facing atrilemma. They may want to have a stablecurrency, an independent monetary policy andcapital account convertibility, but one can't haveall three. At least one of it will have to besacrificed. Right now the capital account is notcompletely open but it is reasonably open and thepositive feeling about the Indian economy isbringing in a lot of capital. The only way thiscapital can be absorbed is to let the real exchangerate appreciate.

In an effort to force down the rupee's value, undernormal circumstances, the RBI buys dollars fromthe market. This releases rupees which the RBIthen tries to mop up by issuing debt instruments. But the RBI has bought some 28.4 billion in dollarsbetween January and May 2007 and it a line needsto be drawn somewhere. The sloshing liquiditythen leads to inflation, which is not politicallypalatable either. Indeed, the RBI sees controllinginflation as its prime mandate. Even though asmeasured by the wholesale price index, inflationhas come down to around 3.65% now, against6.7% in January, analysts warn that the trend mayreverse soon.

The RBI has pulled out all the weapons in itsarmory. It has raised benchmark interest rates

seven times since October 2005. It has sought tosuck liquidity out of the system by increasing thecash reserve ratio (CRR), the amount banks haveto keep with the central bank but has not beenable to control appreciating rupee. Unlike earlier, today India is not starved of dollars. But, astronger rupee does not ensure lower inflation. The scenario in India is quite different from that inU.S. The so-called free markets in India are notfree and allowing market forces full play hasatypical outcomes. Our three principal imports arecrude, gems and jewelry, and capital goods. Crudeprices are still administered. And gems and jewelryand capital goods do not affect inflation.

A glance at our exports shows that some 65% ofour exports leaving IT and software aside for themoment come from the SME segment. There are15 million workers in this sector. The SMEs haveprofit margins of barely 5-10%. If the rupee rises,as it has, their entire profit gets wiped out.

Looking at experts opinions one can see thatIndian companies may not be affected much iftheir international competitors' currencies havealso appreciated. It would be a better option forIndian companies to hedge their currencyexposure, if not done already. Though it may resultin losing some shares in the U.S. market, yet it

Would be profitable to invest in European marketswith Euro and British Pound appreciating againstIndian rupee.

However, just as some companies are getting hurtby the strong rupee, many others like Airlines arebenefiting from it. It is now cheaper for Indians totravel to the U.S. This is also a good time for Indiancompanies to buy equipment and technologyproducts from the U.S. Companies that buycomponents from the U.S. are still in a goodshape. It is a lot cheaper for an Indian PCmanufacturer to buy an Intel chip or a Motorolaphone. Mobile phone operators benefit from thestrong rupee. A stronger rupee will make it easierfor IT firms to set up operations abroad. Also, companies need to work on improving theirresource utilization.

As for manufacturers, one thing could make lifeeasier for them. Currently costs are high becauseof weak infrastructure. As India's infrastructureimproves, those costs will come down. As freightcorridors are built and airports are finished, it willhelp the manufacturers absorb the downside ofthe appreciating rupee. The strong rupee can alsohelp companies drive through some strategicdeals. The strong rupee is good for Indiancompanies seeking to make acquisitions abroadespecially when deals are worth billions, it does

make a difference. After all, everyone likes theirmoney to worth more.

A strong currency is good for a country. Itshouldn't just be beholden from the point of viewof exporters but also consumers, who are going togain undoubtedly because of the strong currency. As the Indian economy grows, the rupee will growstronger. You can't get the benefits of globalizationwithout feeling the other effects. My view is thatthere should be a renewed imperative for IT firmsto go for high-end work across all industries.

RICHTER AND PERSPECTIVE:

NOT JUST A CULTURAL FESTIVAL!!

December’s here again, with its bright sunshine,

chilly teeth-chattering breeze, hot coffees, snuggling pullovers, but hey! This time itsdifferent…there’s a thump in the air, a pulsing beatin every sound that we hear….We are only a fewdays away from two of the most electrifyingevents of IM-NU, Richter and Perspective, whichhave been clubbed together to present one of theexciting management festivals ever held!!

Lazing around is out and that you are going to losea lot if you stay indoors snuggled in your favouriteblanket sipping garma garm chai… Coz it’s the timewhen you are supposed to rock the nights, shockthe daylights out of the people and participate tothe fullest in the upcoming events - where you canprove your mettle and show them your ‘dimaagishakti’ .

The four-day festival which will be held during12th-15th of December, will begin with Perspectivewhich is the game of wits and reason followed byRichter, a riot of cultural affairs. All prestigiousManagement institutions right from the IIM ‘s toK.J. Somaiya are ready to compete with their besttalents in the various events that will be heldduring the festival, such as case studies, debates, paper presentations, street plays singing, anddance competitions.

But it’s pure sacrilege to consider it merely as a“cultural fest” when its really a FESTIVAL OF FUNGAMES AND ULTIMATE SPORTMANSHIP!!! It is afest, an ‘Intellectual Kumbh Mela’ of sorts thatconverges so many things - from your brains tobrawn, from skills to wits - that instead of acultural fest it is more of a combat of who you are, versus who you can be. It is the fest that will bringout your strengths and give you the power toparticipate and the guts to win. The fest. whereyou aren’t required to show only your culturalknow how, but also your strategies and tactics towin. And above all, you will be pitted against thebrightest minds in the country, where more thanwinning, sharing the same platform and giving atough fight is the true incentive.

Because Richter and perspective is going to be asaga untold till now, you are the ones who wouldpen it down. So tighten your seat belts, and takeNirma to the epitome of intelligence andsharpness of mind.

SURROGATE MARKETING:

METHODS AND MORALITY

And who would had thought that thisadvertisment is for packaged drinkingwater.According to dictionary - surrogate meanssubstitute. Many of us have come across this wordin connection with surrogate motherhood. Thistime it has come in a new avatar - "SurrogateAdvertisement". Surrogate advertising… a trendwhich is fast catching up with Indian companieshas suddenly attracted a lot of innovative andcreative brains around the country.

ORIGIN OF SURROGATE ADVERTISEMENTS

As a reaction to the directive of Government, theliquor & tobacco majors sought other ways ofendorsing their products. They have found analternative path of advertising through which theycan keep on reminding their liquor brands to theircustomers. They have introduced various otherproducts with the same brand name. Launchingnew products with common brand name is known

as brand extension, which can be carried out forrelated products (eg: Tata Salt and Tata Tea) orunrelated products (eg: Tata Tea and Tata Indica).Prima facie, there is nothing wrong with brandextension. The problem occurs when brandextension is carried out in response to the ban onadvertisement of one product category. In thiscase, the companies launch other products withthe same brand name for the purpose ofreminding their old customers. Heavy advertisingis done so that the customers do not forget theirliquor & tobacco brands, for which advertisementsare banned. The advertisements for such newproducts are placed under the category of"Surrogate Advertisements". Their only objectiveis to compensate the losses arising out of the banon advertisements of one particular product (i.e.liquor).

The Dilemma

On one hand, the govt cannot allow publicadvertising of liquor companies. But ironically, liquor and cigarette sales are the biggest revenuegenerators in terms of taxes and duties on theseitems. That’s why an overt acceptance of themarketing in these sectors is not legallyacceptable. This has led to one of the biggestironies of the country – Sales of these items arenot banned, yet advertising on the same hasstrictly been prohibited!

SURROGATE MARKETING:

METHODS AND MORALITY

The rule says “Advertisements which lead to sale, consumption and promotion of liquor should notbe allowed.” So, in Surrogate Marketing, a productwhich is different from the main product isadvertised, and has the same brand name as themain product. The product is called as “surrogate”and advertising through this channel is called“Surrogate Advertising”!It may include CDs, water, clothing, Apple juice, fashion accessories, sports goods or even eventssponsoring!

These gimmicks, in turn, help the consumers builda strong equity of the parent brand, and with theenhanced visibility, the equity of the brand woulddefinitely become higher!

Liquor companies were forced to look atinnovative ways of building their brands. With anobjective of enhancing brand recall, companieseither engage into “surrogate advertising” ordisplaying “socially responsible messages”.

And how can we forget politicsA similar tussle over the issue of surrogateadvertisements in politics was raised in April 2004on the eve of Lok Sabha elections. Complaints ofslanderous and offensive advertisements wereraised by two major political parties - BJP andCongress against each other. The issue became soserious that the Supreme Court had to interfere in

this affair. Finally on 13 April 2004, the Court gavea verdict to curb smear advertisements onelectronic media. By appointing ElectionCommission as referee, the court has tried to putan end to surrogate advertising in politics.

What are the other practices companies arelooking at?a) Heard about the “Red and White Bravery

Awards”??? Companies are getting involved inSponsorships of events and have launchedtheir own awards for bravery or lifetimeachievements!

b) Internet advertising has become a lucrativearea which has so far not been delved into. The medium holds a lot of potential toenhance visibility, and companies have latelyrealized that. You advertise on a site which isregistered outside India and bong... youcircumvent Indian laws.

c) "Oohhh-laa-laa-laa-lole-ooo... Ooh-laa-laa-laa-laa-laa-le-Ohh. Catchy jingles havebecome the norm of the day to ensure thattheir brands have a high brand recall

d) With restrictions in other marketing elements– in terms of pricing and distribution, companies have ventured into anotherimportant element – Packaging.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK

This cartoon aptly depicts the spirit of day trading

or “trading on margin” as it is more commonlyreferred to. With the Sensex touching new heightsevery fortnight and the volatility on the indicesboggling the minds of the people, it sure is a Daytrader’s dream come true.

Simply put, day trading is a highly risky gamewherein the speculator bets on the short term(meaning a few hours or minutes, or it could evenbe seconds) movement of the stock price in eitherdirection. Such trades are driven mostly byrumours or the so- called “insider information” onany particular scrip. It is thus, based purely on thetechnical analysis of the stock as contrary to thefundamentals of the stock. This makes it all themore risky. To quote investment guru Warren

Buffet, “With a million dollars to invest in stockmarket and insider information, you will be brokein a year.”

A lot of people attempt day trading on the “tips“received from their brokers. Here I can recall ajoke I read somewhere…..Why is the person towhom you entrust your life long savings called abroker? ……………..coz he makes you broke.. :)

That was of course on the lighter side. A lot ofpeople devote hours and hours to the technicalanalysis of the stocks, pouring over tons and tonsof paper and charts, trying to identify patterns andtechniques to aid in day trading. These peoplehave made millions in the past and continue to doso. This brings us to the fundamental question asto what Day trading actually is.

What is Day Trading?

• Day Trading involves taking a position in themarkets with a view of squaring that positionbefore the end of that day.

• A day trader typically trades several times a daylooking for fractions of a point to a few pointsper trade, but who close out all their positionsby day's end.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK

• The goal of a day trader is to capitalize on price movement within one trading day.

• Unlike investors, a day trader may hold positions for only a few seconds or minutes, and never overnight.

Day trading can be further subdivided into a number of styles, including:

• Scalpers: This style of day trading involves therapid and repeated buying and selling of a largevolume of stocks within seconds or minutes. The objective is to earn a small per share profiton each transaction while minimizing the risk.

• Momentum Traders: This style of day tradinginvolves identifying and trading stocks that arein a moving pattern during the day, in anattempt to buy such stocks at bottoms and sellat tops.

Advantages of Day Trading

• Zero Overnight Risk: Since positions are closedprior to the end of the trading day, news andevents that affect the next trading day'sopening prices do not effect your portfolio.

• Increased Leverage: Day Traders have a greaterleverage on their trading capital because of lowmargin requirements as their trades that areclosed in the same market day. This increased

leverage can increase your profits if usedwisely.

• Profit in any market direction: Day tradingoften will utilize short-selling to take advantageof declining stock prices. The ability to lock inprofits even as markets fall throughout thetrading day is extremely useful during bearmarket conditions.

• Liquidity to the market: Day traders benefit themarket by offering liquidity and efficiency

Entry level Strategies of day trading

There are per se no set strategies of day trading. Itall depends on the then existing volatility of thestock price movement, the volumes traded, anystock specific news, short term trend analysis ofthe stock and the risk appetite of the trader. Atechnical analysis of the stock from the chartsusing following methods may also help:

• Identifying the Support and Resistance levels

• Identifying the trend as in Upward, Downward or Range bound

• Line charts, Bar charts, Point and Figure charts

• Candle-stick charts

• Moving Averages

• Head and Shoulders pattern

• Double tops and bottoms

How is day trading done?

It basically involves taking a position say buyposition in Reliance stock at the prevailing marketprice. The main advantage of day trading is thehigh leverage it permits. Most brokers allowtrading for 5 times the margin deposited. Thismeans, on a margin deposit of Rs 1 Lakh, you cantake positions up to Rs 5 lakhs. Thus, consideringthe price of Reliance Industries stock at Rs 2800, inday trading, I can buy as many as 178 shares in adeposit of Rs 1 lakh while in case of delivery basedtrading, I could have bought only 35 shares. Thebrokerage is also very low on intra daytransactions. While it costs brokerage of 25-30paise per Rs 100 of transaction in case of deliverybased transactions, it costs only about 3 paise perRs 100 of transaction in intra day trading. As a daytrader, I normally square off my position before

the end of the day, meaning I take a reverseposition in the same stock for the same quantity. The difference between the two trading prices(net of the brokerage and transaction charge) ismy gain or loss. Some brokers do allow the tradersto convert the day trade into delivery based tradeand take delivery of the said stock to cut thelosses of the trader in the event of falling prices.

Day trading is a highly risky game that sets theadrenaline pumping. So go ahead and take a peakinto this world at your own risk. Enjoy.

THE TUMBLERHALF FILLED

“Look at your tumbler as half-filled and not half-empty”, Dad would always say. He has beenprofessing this thought to me since my childhood, quoting examples from his 30-some years then. Now his 30-somes have turned into 50-somes, andI’ve grown up from an eccentric child to a younglady (still slightly eccentric!!). But, I can profoundlysay that it was one of the most vital lessons of mylife that I learnt from as trivial an event as atumbler half-filled (Yes! And not half-empty).

Over the years, life has strayed away from theplanned way. Dreams have remained semi-fulfilled. But it’s easier this way to be happy - bycounting my achievements rather than recallingwhat’s lost. And isn’t this what life is all about – tobe happy; and not just exist like creatures??

Don’t misunderstand this “being happy syndrome”with complacency. Unfulfilled desires can fuel yourfire within. But it’s your view-point on the tumblerthat will decide whether this fire consumes yourinner peace or propels you to enhance yourefforts. Moreover, only a half-filled tumbler hasthe capacity to have more.

Like someone said, “It is necessary to be at peacewith yourself, for being at peace with the worldaround you”. So give a toast to all yourachievements! Let the tumblers clink in “Cheers!”.The tumblers half-filled! Right, Dad??

RELATIONS NEED TIMESHORT STORY

Preamble: This is a story my grandmother used totell whenever I used to pay her a visit in this idyllicvillage in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Prologue:

My village didn’t have electricity and so, itsresidents used to finish cooking dinner by evening. They used to sleep in the open air in the nights ofsummer.

My elder brother was a studious lad, and thatinevitably made me the leader of gang of children.

We used to create all types of nuisance for all thewomen in the household involved in makingsupper for us. That used to be the time when weheard a familiar mellow voice: “Tunnu, come hearwith your gang I will tell you a story”. I used towonder, why dadi is calling, but a democraticleader that I was, I used to surrender to theoverwhelming consensus in my gang, which wasto listen to dadi’s never enchanting stories. Weused to sit under a neem tree with dadi. My headwould be resting gently on dadi’s lap and I wouldpatiently wait for her story to end. As the storyprogressed, I would have stopped paying attentionto the story because I had memorized the storyword by word, having heard it so many times inthe past.

The story:

Once upon a time there was a baheliya .He usedto lay traps to catch birds and sell them in the city. One day he visited the jungle to trap birds, butwas able to manage only one bulbul. Since it wasnot economically feasible to visit city to sell onlyone bird, he kept it in a cage, near his door. Hethought to sell it with other birds in the nearfuture. It started raining that night.

While telling this, dadi became gloomy .Shegestured and spoke superstitiously about thewhims of rain god .I guess the pain of last year’sdraught was still fresh in her mind. She heaved asigh .It was an indication that she has come backto the story now.

Baheliya went to the door and brought the cageinto the house for safety. He used to live alone sohe did not require anyone’s permission to do so.

That week rain god decided to wreak havoc.Bahelia couldn’t go outside to earn anything.Gradually as time passed, he started payingattention towards bulbul. When it became evident that he will diesomeday, he opened the door of cage so that thebulbul could fly to her place after his death.

The next day was a bright sunny one. Bahelia’sfriend came to his home to ask whether he willaccompany him to the jungle. He found thatbahelia was no more and a tittle petite bird wasseating just beside him.

After the bahelia’s death new habitants occupiedthe house but bulbul refused to leave the house.

With these words dadi again heaved a sigh. Thiswas an indication that story has reached to anend. One of my cousins asked curiously, whywasn’t there any king in this story? Then dadi told:“Most of the stories don’t have any raja or rani.

I wonder what did dadi actually wanted to say.May be the essence of the story was that no one is

good or bad .You should take your time beforemaking your mind about someone. If a bulbul canlike a baheliya, why can’t a human like anotherhuman?
