Our March meeting will feature silk magic.Everyone has several magic effects that produce,vanish, change color or tie and untie silkhandkerchiefs. Get those tricks out and plan onpresenting them at our meeting Monday evening.

We had J.P. Jackson all set up to present a specialmini lecture on silk magic and J.P. was going toshow off his beautiful collection of Rice Silks. Butwe are sad to report that J.P. was rushed to the NavyHospital in late February where he underwentsurgery. He is at home now recovering, but he willnot be able to present his silk lecture. He promisesthat will happen at a later date.

In place of the mini lecture wehave another surprise workedout for you. More on that atthe meeting. In the meantimeget out your Tarbell books orthe Rice Silk Encyclopedia andwork out a routine with silks.There is nothing prettier than agood silk routine.

Bob Inglles, our 1st Vice President in charge ofentertainment, reminds everyone that we will bevoting on performer of the year awards this month,so if you perform, your vote will go toward performerof the year status.

Our meetings start at 7 p.m. sharp each month, sodon't be late. Any member who wants to perform atthe bar before the meeting begins is welcome to doso. Some of the best magic of the month happensduring the pre-meeting get togethers.

Ring 76 Beach Party &meeting in the planningstages

The Ring 76 board of directors is always lookingahead and attempting to make plans for specialprograms for our members. We are currentlyplanning a beach party at Mission Bay on the grassfor the August meeting.

We are currently looking at Sunday afternoon,August 14th, for this special meeting. It would be alate afternoon meeting. Though our planning is stillin the earliest stages, we are also looking at servinghamburgers and hot dogs, soft drinks, and potatochips, and salad.

This meeting will be open to members and theirfamilies and their guests only and will include close-up magic. We might also have some carnival stylegames for children and prizes for the winners. Ifthere are any members who would like to serve onthis committee you will be welcome.

Contact Jack White, who is chairman of the planningcommittee for the August event. While this seemslike it is a long way into the future, these things havea habit of sneaking up on us, so it is important thatwe make our plans now and have everything readyfor this special Ring meeting.

If you have any ideas for making this a more excitingevent, please let Jack know or, better still, become amember of this steering committee.

February 14th close-up contest draws largefield of performers in an exciting event

The annual Ring 76 Close-up contest took up ourmeeting time in February. A good turnout ofperformers, as well as spectators, made for anexciting evening of magic. The winners of thecontest will be announced at our Awards andInstallation banquet in July. Each member of theaudience and the performers themselves wereallowed to vote for the winner.

Eight members took part in the contest, and weknow that some changes have to be made for futureclose-up contests. Amateur and professionalmagicians should be judged separately. Next yearwe will have a time keeper at each table, and we willhave a shotgun start so that tables do not have towait for the next performer; one will always be readyto step in and go to work.

The contestants taking part this year included; LochDavid Crane, Toni Perrine, Salomon Barajas, JohnLondon, Jim Thayer, Mago Ruly, Howard Harris,Diane Lane, Alex Greenbaum, Joe Mystic, TomMcCarthy, and Michael E. Johnson. Most of ourcontestants signed up the evening of the meeting.Our board of directors believes it would be better ifcontestants sign up the month before the close-upcontest and we can print up a ballot for all of thecontestants designating if they are a pro or anamateur status.

This year's contestants presented a wide array ofclose-up magic that ranged from cards, coins, andmentalism to comedy. Several of the contestantsdid not perform for all six of the tables. All that wetalked with said it was a good experience and thatthey would do it again.

All of the performers seemed to enjoy going fromtable to table, presenting their magic performance,though it did mean doing the same act five and sixtimes during the evening. One contestant told meshe thought she improved as she moved from onetable to another.

We thought we would let the pictures on this and thenext page tell the story of this year's close-up magiccontest.

Michael Close Lecturein San Diego

Michael Close, the Las Vegas based magician andMagic Magazine columnist, presented a lecture forRing 76 Monday evening, March 1st. Michael hasalways been on the cutting edge of progress andthat was exemplified in his lecture. In addition to hislive presentation, he offered important informationthrough the use of Power Point on a giant screen setup next to the stage.

Close presented a series ofexcellent card tricks that he usesin his regular cocktail loungeshows at the Monte Carlo Casinoin Las Vegas. He not only toldus how he did his tricks but whyhe included these effects in hisact.

One of the points that Closemade in his lecture was to letyour audience know who you areand a little bit about you. Do itthrough your story telling andyour magic. He then gaveseveral examples of how he doesthis with his act.

Michael Close has recentlywritten and published throughonline printing a new book titled:"Closely Guarded Secrets." Ifprinted out it would be 600 pluspages of material. He is currentlyselling his book on CD-Romthrough several online bookstores and at his lecture.

Magician Loch Crane goes to school inLas Vegas to become a better performer

(Las Vegas, NV) Dining room tables levitated abovethe stage; accurate predictions of the future weremade; an escape artist was pulled througha two-inch hole into a small box. Two delicatebutterflies pulled your chosen card from the deckupon command, and then returned to theMagician's hand. The Superbowl playoff was held,the Iraquis voted, and a coven of a dozen Magiciansconvened above the rain-soaked desert. Forthese necromantic nerds, it was more fun thanchasing girls. Mask master and Guinness WorldRecord holder Jeff McBride's Master Class, held inthe Magic capital of the World, took a handful ofupcoming Magicians to dizzying heights over theweekend.

Card tricks, coin tricks, mind reading, and stageillusions were practiced and perfected by mysticaltravelers from Brazil, Canada, Texas, Delaware, andSan Diego. Let me introduce myself, my name isLoch David Crane, I am a San Diego native, and Iattended the Master Class and polished my skills inprestidigitation, preparing for performances underthe ghostly green clouds of Glitter Gulch, Las Vegas,Nevada.

The three days of workshops and seminars gaveeach wizard the opportunity to rehearse his or herdeveloping illusions before a stellar faculty of award-winning performers, stage professionals, andbusiness consultants. Under their direction the maleand female performers learned new illusions andmagic effects, studied lighting and staging, learnedbusiness management to preserve the salaries theywould charge, and developed new bits andtechniques to add to their acts back home.

I attended the school to get reaction to a new act Iam breaking in. It is a less controversial character:"Merlin-ye-Mage." After performing a dozen years as"Bafflin Bill Cody," I found the cowboy image is notas popular as it once was worldwide.

The once popular western heroes of stage andscreen like Clint Eastwood are all fifty years orolder; and even sunny San Diego has suffered moreschool shooting incidents than any other Americancity. Every city school now has a zero-tolerancepolicy, preventing even an entertainerfrom firing a blank gun or stabbing the deck with ajawbone-handled knife to find your selected card.Getting the knife, gun, saber, and other weird propsthru the airports is also more difficult these days.And any untrained parent who thinks a child mightbe scared by drama and big props can complain tothe school principal-and the show is not onlycancelled, but forbidden to perform for all the cityschools in the future.

So a cleaner, less controversial character wasneeded. "Merlin ye Mage" was created to tap into theEuropean universal stereotypes about knights,damsels in distress, and exotic medieval weapons.The Harry Potter tsunami of exciting reading for kidsalso helped raise public consciousness of medievaland wizardly activities worldwide. And mostemigrating Americans came from lands with kings,castles, and intermarriage. Merlin is a darker, moremysterious and unnerving character than the affablecowboy; the drama is stronger, the tricks are bigger,and Professor McBride notes "the props andcostume have an astonishing attention to detail"which makes the act "Awesome!"

Ring 76 magic swapmeet set for April 11 th

The annual Ring 76 magic swap meet is open to allmembers and their guests. If you would like to be aseller the club sells table space for $10 for a 6-foottable. We will also be selling half tables for thosewho have just a few items to sell. A half table is $5.

This is a very popular evening for our members andas many of you know last year's swap meet was asellout. So that you are not disappointed, wesuggest that you make your reservation for a tablesoon. We want to remind our members that this is only aswap meet; there will not be an auction during thisevent. Doors will open to sellers at 4:30 pm so youcan set up your tables. World Magic Seminar & othermagic conventions

The World Magic Seminarwas held February 20th to the 23rd at the OrleansHotel & Casino in Las Vegas and as usual this eventdrew a large number of San Diego magicians to itslectures, shows and dealers room. Tom LaChance,Bob Ingalls, Ralph Mauzy, Don and Donna Soul,Dick and Julie Dale, Len Cardoza, Joe Mystic,Kenny Shelton, Diane Lane and I all were inattendance.

The highlight and perhaps the most emotional part ofthis year's seminar was an on stage appearance ofRoy Horn. At last year's seminar Siegfriedannounced that in 2005 Roy would be at his side onstage. It happened and he received a standingovation. He stood with Siegfried on stage for a fewminutes and then took a few steps before asking forhis wheel chair. Roy is still a very sick man, but heis continuing to recover from his injuries and ismaking very good progress. His appearance didhave a shocking realism as to how bad he wasinjured in the incident with the tiger a year and a halfago.

The schedule was a little different this year with mostof the morning lecturers not beginning until 11 a.m.In years past the first lecture would start at 9 a.m.The new schedule allowed people to stay up lateand party and still make it to the first event of the dayon time. With the morning events pushed back acouple of hours there were more events in the lateafternoon and several late evening programs.

The Close-up demonstration featured Carl Andrews,Vanni Bossi, Glenn Farrington, Nathan Gibson, whowon the IBM Close-upcompetition last year inCleveland, Mickey Silver andLennart Green. This was avery fast paced program andwith this kind of talent therewas some excellent close-upwork. The best part - much ofthe close-up was withoutcards.

The zanyBob Sheets

The next evening there was a late evening Cabaretshow featuring San Diego's own Bob Sheets,Johnny Fox and Docc Hilford. I don't know howlong this show was scheduled to last but it was twohours long and the audience would have stayedeven longer if the performers would have continuedto work. Johnny Fox worked with Bob Sheets in arestaurant in Aspen and they have been friends foryears. Johnny is a lover of circus sideshowentertainment and he did some sword swallowingand other offbeat style magic.

Docc Hilford has a powerful voice and he knows howto use it for dramatic effect. He told a ghost storyand used the card stab with a long sword that wasmost effective. He also presented a very niceinterlude of mentalism that in his hands was mosteffective.

Bob Sheets was at his best for this show. Hepresented his numbered blocks that change and turnaround and do all kinds of wonderful things. He ofcourse did the three shells and the little pea and got

a| standingI ovation.It was anexcitingshow thatI almostmissedand amveryhappy Istayedup late totake it in.

The dealers room was a very big one this year andoffered a lot of magic for sale. If you are a collectoryou should have been in heaven; there were threecomplete sets of the Albo books and all threedealers were ready to sharpen their pencil to make adeal. The hottest new trick that everyone seemed tohave was a packet trick with two cards called"Melted:" one card melts through the other. It was

the best $15-dollars you could spend at theconvention.

This is the first year for this event at the OrleansHotel & Casino, which is about a half mile off theVegas Strip. This hotel was the home for theMagicLive Conference in August and they know how

to takecare of agroup ofmagi.Everythingwas keptin a smallarea;lecturerooms,dealer'sroom andregistrationwere all

within easy walking distance. The main show roomwas not far away and that is where the big afternoonshows were held. This was a well-planned andstaged convention by Rich Block and Bill Wells. Iwill go back again next year.

While I am on the subject of magic conventions I justreceived my March issue of Magic Magazine and init they list all of the magic conventions for 2005. Bymy count there will be 46-major magic eventssomewhere in the United States between now andnext January 1st. it is mind boggling the number ofmagic conventions, gathering and seminars that arebeing held around the country. Some are one andtwo-day events and some are full four - and - five-day magic conventions.

That brings me to the IBM Convention in Reno,Nevada, June 28th, to July 2nd. As many of youalready know, because Reno does not have an IBMRing, Mel Kientz, the convention chairperson, hasasked various members of Rings in California andArizona, to help out as part of this year's conventionplanning committee. Bob Ingalls, Don Soul and Ihave been invited to serve on the committee.

The three of us have already met with the rest of thecommittee in Reno, and this year's IBM Conventionis shaping up to be one of the best ever staged.Everything will take place in one location, the HiltonHotel & Casino, except for one surprise event I willtell you about in a moment. The Reno Hilton islocated less than a mile from the Reno Airport so thecab ride will not cost you an arm and a leg.

The Reno Hilton has dozens of restaurants to fitevery budget, so you don't have to leave the hotel tofind food. Like the World Magic Seminar, all of thelectures, contests and the dealer's room for the IBMConvention will be held in one area of the hotel,making it easy for those who have trouble movingaround. The main show room at the hotel, whichhosts the largest and most modern stage in theUnited States, will be ours for four nights of magicshows. By the way, the seating in this showroom isfantastic.

One of the great highlights of this year's conventionwill be a bus trip to one of the most exciting magicvenues going: Mark & Jinger Kalin's UndergroundMagic Theater & Museum. The Kalins opened thisnew and exciting all in one magic enterprise late lastyear and they are offering it at no extra charge toeveryone registered at the IBM Convention. Thebuses that transport us to the underground theaterwill also give us a little tour of the historic andshopping sites in Reno, another bonus of thisconvention.

There is a reason for my telling you about all of thisat this time. That is because they are limiting thenumber of registrations this year at the IBMConvention to 1200. Roger Wicks, the man incharge of registration, tells me things are filling upfast for this summer's exciting event. Spring is in the air and for folkswho have spent time around thecircus, these are the days whenold-time showman would beginpainting and repairing their props,prop cases and all of theparaphernalia that goes withputting on a show and hitting theroad for the long season ahead.

All of that might be a bit drastic formany members of our Ring, butthis is the time of year we all startpreparing for more magic showactivity. With that in mind, I wantto remind all of our members thatnext month we have our annualmagic swap meet. It's a timewhen we all get together and getrid of the tricks we have notperformed in years and look atsomeone else's magic to see if wecan make a routine out of it and ofcourse get a deal, price-wise atthe same time.

I have never understood whysome other guy's magic alwayslooks so much better than mine.It not too soon to begin gettingyour old props, books and video-tapes out and putting a price onthem for the swap meet. There isa story elsewhere in thisnewsletter with more details ongetting a table for this annualevent. You might want to look forit.

I, like so many other San Diegomagi, was able to attend theWorld Magic Seminar in LasVegas, last month. I was able tohave some time for a one-on-oneconversation with Jeff McBride.We talked about the presentationof a good magic routine. Also in

this issue of MagiCurrents you willfind an article by Loch DavidCrane and his experienceattending Jeff McBride's classes.Take the time to read the article; Ithink you will find it veryinteresting.

Phil King, who is now living inMissouri but is still a member ofRing 76, tells us he had quadruplebypass open-heart surgery onJanuary 27th. He says there wasno damage to the heart musclebecause his problems werediscovered before he had a heartattack. Phil and his wife hadplanned to be in San Diego,visiting family during Februaryand March, but he is not planningat trip west now until at least nextfall or winter. We all send ourbest wishes for a speedyrecovery.

Former Ring 76 performer of theyear Bryan McDaniel is on hisway to Iraq and will be there forthe next year or so. A retired U.S.Marine, Bryan will be embeddedwith the U.S. Army at CampVictory in Iraq, as a securitytechnician. Bryan will be helpingthe Army train Iraq security forcesso our people can one day comehome. He says he will of coursebe taking his many decks ofcards, sponge balls, thumb tips,silks, cups and balls and whateverelse space will allow. He knowshe will find an audience or twothat is willing to sit through one ofhis performances. He haspromised to send us updates onhis life working for SAIC at CampVictory. Good Luck, Bryan, andwe will look forward to your returnto San Diego.

Michael E. Johnson, has beenworking hard doing shows in SanDiego County this past month buthe also found time to fill a date ata trade show in Dallas, Texas. Itis interesting how he got that gig.Last year a couple of medicalresearch workers were visitingSan Diego; they enjoy magic andare members of the IBM; theyfound our meeting and wereguests. They saw Michaelperform at that meeting and wereso impressed they had theircompany book him for their tradeshow booth. Way to go, Michael.
